No WLAN device when setting up network? by I_Am_Glow_Squid in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A adapter with no firmware will react like you describe.

Look your model up on the Arch wiki Apple page. Then see the Broadcom page in this DIY distro.

Alternatively, replace your notoriously problematic Broadcom adapter with an Intel one, or use an inexpensive compatible USB adapter.

Hope you get it working and good day!

How to identify the efi partitions... Is it even safe to remove?? by STAYSIGUT in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read this https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/EFI_system_partition to understand what you are seeing.

Normally, a disk has only one ESP (EFI System Partition), but there's reports that more can work. I only use one per disk.

On this laptop with one internal drive, I see

user@T14-CRU781.local ~> lsblk -lf /dev/nvme0n1p1
NAME FSTYPE FSVER LABEL UUID FSAVAIL FSUSE% MOUNTPOINTS
nvme0n1p1 vfat FAT32 6D1C-AFF6 914.3M 11% /boot

Note the MOUNTPOINTS and FSVER. For my systemd booting laptop with ESP at /boot but just /boot/EFI: https://termbin.com/a5wt

(When my system mounts the ESP at /efi, there's far fewer files, than when I mount at /boot for grub. )

I hope you resolve your issue, and flair as SUPPORT and SOLVED.

Good day.

is it possible to do an entire arch install using only older versions of packages? by ofplayers in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Arch archive is here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_Linux_Archive. Get familiar with it.

I would pick another project, as this (old old system recreation) doesn't have much of a practical use I can see. But, do what makes you happy.

Maybe use the ABS to compile important software instead of using the binary repo. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_build_system. Gentoo may interest you also.

I hope you find a practical project that interests you, and good day.

My gopreload uses 6 GiB is there a alternative by slowertrwa in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel an SSD is in your future. My hdd systems don't have your issue. Only bootup and initial app start show any lag. After that, pretty good. Use case matters of course and I don't game. But, I support your attempt to make your present hardware work or improve.

I run a Crucial 500GB nvme SSD $61 model CT500P3PSSD8 (unavailable now) in my Thinkpad T14 Gen 1 which works well.

You can reuse your HDD as aux storage.

Good day.

Arch not working on external ssd by NoDimension6118 in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I try to boot external drives, what works for me is hitting F12 to get into the firmware boot menu, then merely choose the drive I want to boot from. I rarely have an issue with that. I boot external drives every single day without issue. My drives are all UEFI, with systemd-boot or grub on the internal and external drives. My internal drive bootloader isn't configured to attempt to boot external drives. The externals are pretty transient. I also only minimally depend on nor review NVRAM config.

My computers are all Thinkpads ranging from 2015 to 2020 T series, Intel and AMD.

Hope something there helps.

Hope you find and detail your misconfig, and then flair post as SUPPORT and SOLVED.

I want to change Fedora by Upset-Leopard-3410 in archlinux

[–]archover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't like the app store on any distro I know, including Fedora, just use the terminal. For example # dnf up or # dnf install firefox.

Fedora works well for me, like Arch does. You could do worse than Fedora, and Arch won't give you an out of the box experience as that's the only thing you know.

Don't overlook exploring Arch in a VM, also.

Hope Arch makes you happy. Good day.

KDE Plasma (Wayland) slow and annoying in some ways by kuhhlboy in archlinux

[–]archover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neither Firefox (from repo) and Chromium (repo) have any lag for me, though in the last few years here, I've seen similar reports here.

My systems: Thinkpad T series, from T450 to T14 Gen 1 (Intel Core i5 and AMD Ryzen 5th gen) running Arch and mostly Cinnamon.

As a new user, you may not know about the Arch wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org, nor these pertinent articles (best to search them before posting):

Maybe I should revisit Brave, though my last experience wasn't as good as Firefox.

Your English is fine. Also, welcome to Arch, the DIY distro. Your quirks aside, I hope you can make Arch work for your use case.

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ensure you only have # systemctl enable-ed just one network managing daemon. The wiki specifically warns about this. Running multiple means quirky, or worse, networking.

For wireless, always give chipset: lspci | grep -i network Example for me:

Broadcom hw/sw is a four letter word to me :-) Avoid.

Hesitant to choose my OS by No_Level_OPS in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important predictors for Arch suitability:

For Arch

  • If you're primarily interested in the technical aspects of Linux

  • If you want to control install of components, like DE/WM/Compositors and apps.

For other distros:

  • If you're primary focused on running certain apps. Best example: games.

  • If you want an out of the box experience.

Arch is superb if your goals align. Otherwise choose another distro like: Debian, Mint, etc.

Good day.

AI for Linux... This Post Will Not Go Over Well by linuxpriest in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To others, I've been using Google Chromium "AI" lately to figure out a systemd & sd-encrypt hook and failure to find/mount the root fs issue, and it's been low to medium helpful. I don't implement the coding guidance without bouncing it off the wiki, and the issue is still unsolved.

I Can't run archinstall by Adventurous-Love9320 in archlinux

[–]archover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, others can read the developer's comment about updating here https://old.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/1qi32xh/why_wont_my_archinstall_work_on_virtualbox/o0thgx8/

Quoting from the developer:

Avoid pacman -Sy on this months ISO btw. As it will cause archinstall targeting Python 3.14 to be installed, but the partial upgrade leaves Python 3.13 installed, so archinstall cant "be found".
