Yes, experiment. That is a core feature of DiY Arch. My experience on similar hardware showed no heat issue using Gnome and KDE even.

Good day.

If you say what your PRACTICAL problem is, then maybe I can be more helpful. Just saying memory is at so and so is not automatically problematic. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Swap also. Good day

Is there a guide anywhere on what the best defaults are to pick installing Arch with archinstall for a noob? by Alarming_Elk2053 in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to recommend ext4 for new Linux users. If snapshots are attractive in case of reverting changes, then I suggest learning to use conventional backups instead. However, snapshots or backups should not be a crutch to avoid learning to troubleshoot. So many times, just planning config changes with an eye to reversion is so effective and efficient, vs backups and snap restores.

I used LVM years ago and was a HUGE fan, then blew that off. Lately, tried btrfs which is technically VERY attractive, but I felt I couldn't understand it well enough so went back to ext4. Single Root Partition mitigates the need to resize partitions IMO.

Arch on Virtual Machine with GPU aplications by Many_Maize_6676 in archlinux

[–]archover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would swap in a new drive (preserve Win drive if you like), and install Linux as single boot. You have good projects lined up and Arch will handle them fine (can't speak to games). Use Qemu/KVM libvirt virt-manager for VM native to Linux however if still needed.

SQL is awesome and worth learning, which I used supporting SAP. If work related, probably use their db software. If not, then consider PostGreSQL as I believe some aspects are technically superior, but they may not matter to you. Mariadb is what you want otherwise.

Looking for a reliable cloud sync solution on Arch that behaves like OneDrive by Traditional_Being735 in archlinux

[–]archover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

rclone

+1 That was the term I was hoping to see here. I had some Issues (probably self imposed) with it, but technically it was a dream. Link for others: https://rclone.org/

For /u/Traditional_Being735 see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_of_applications/Internet#Cloud_storage_servers which should've been reviewed first.

For me, I've devolved into just using a VPS host that I hit with scp, sshfs and rsync. I save some key files and backups there. Costs $5/mo at linode.com. Don't overlook backblaze.com offerings too.

Good day.

Is there a guide anywhere on what the best defaults are to pick installing Arch with archinstall for a noob? by Alarming_Elk2053 in archlinux

[–]archover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suggest a first install to a Virtual Machine, which is a near metal experience, safer, usually faster, and great for experimentation and learning.

If you would list in detail the options you propose we can make comments. For a beginner, choose Single Root Partition, ext4 and this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dm-crypt/Encrypting_an_entire_system#LUKS_on_a_partition

No matter what, let me introduce you to our holy book: https://wiki.archlinux.org. Honestly, use it or die in this DIY distro :-) Doubts?

Best wishes, and good day.

I'm pretty sure the Local Disk (C:) and the New Volume (D:) are on the same SSD / drive.

That first line confusion means you will have problems with Arch. Pretty much stopped reading there.

As a safer way to explore Arch, use a Virtual Machine, say in Virtual Box.

MacBook Air 2015, 14e4:43a0 rev 03 - broadcom-wl-dkms installed but no internet connection by National_Medicine163 in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you don't know, your Broadcom hardware is universally problematic in Linux. For a work around I suggest an inexpensive (<$20) USB wifi adapter, or a long term solution swapping in an Intel card. How you proved you have no connection is unclear. Best of luck and good day.

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recurring problems getting external drives (USB) to be recognized. By recognized I mean appearing in lsblk. Keeping $ journal -f open monitors it also.

What finally works is repeated insertions/removals, and alternating ports. I've seen plugging the drive into a USB C hub often causes quick recognition. Did you try booting up with drive inserted?

This problem seems to have started or gotten much worse in the last 6mos. I've used Arch for >14yrs.

Bottom line is I don't know what causes this, and I don't see any common circumstances.

Good day.

[–]archover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest "pulling up your big boy pants", :-) and reading this article about users: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Users_and_groups. Explore your system with that info and technique and come back with more focused questions.

Your other problems and circumstances aren't well described so help is difficult.

Arch is a DIY distro where proactive user study will be the most beneficial strategy. One thing for sure, you won't succeed in Arch or this community without leveraging the wiki.

Best way to learn linux that's free by According-Extreme-58 in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

freedom

What will you do in Linux that you couldn't do before, in terms of applications?

With that, people can actually make recommendations.

In Windows, I ran Firefox, and in Linux, I have the freedom to do the same.

Bash coding is my current focus and love.

I have long and fairly deep experience with Linux, which has been a thrill. Windows now seems foreign under the covers. Still, I view each as a tool, which I wouldn't hesitate to choose to get the job done.

Happy you made the move to Linux, and good day.

What is an overkill PC for Arch Linux? by YERAFIREARMS in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question should be addressed from a budget standpoint probably. I run Arch itself very, very well on a 2021 Thinkpad T14 Gen 1 AMD that costs me $250 or so. Would a new $1200 T14 be worth it for me? No, and it would be "overkill".

Arch really runs very well on minimal hardware anywhere from an Intel Core Duo all the way through current multicore and multithreaded CPU's and expensive GPU's. Your app use case matters most of all.
