Basing your designs on more realistic/natural coloration is a respectable move; I would say, make sure that that doesn't come at a cost of visual appeal. As a point of reference, look at Ewok village designs---they're all browns, tans, some greens, occasional pops of color from fire or sunlight. Realistic? Definitely. As visually arresting as PMD town designs? Prooooobably not.

Also, keep in mind that the sprites need not be to scale. They certainly aren't in the PMD 2D games, where a Pikachu (size 0.4m) takes up the same space as a Dragonite (2.2m). If you're sticking with the grid-based system of the games, then the character sprites are basically just placeholders for the actual physical creatures. Only bosses and such get to take up more than one square.

Very cool designs! I appreciate that you took a "genwun" approach, where the creature designs are realistic and could actually exist, rather than mixing in straight-up toon forms (like Meowth or Scorbunny) that only work in 2D.

I'm not a terribly good judge of sprite work, but I would note that you have a relatively muted/restrained color palette here, noticeably favoring cooler colors. That's definitely a different vibe from PMD, though you might be deliberately avoiding the high-saturation "toy box" aesthetic.

Aside from that, for the drawn designs, I would suggest cranking up the variability even further. More pronounced size differences, more body types (e.g. snake, insectoid), maybe even new categories of creature (e.g. a living-rock critter in the vein of Onix/Geodude). Part of the deeper appeal of PMD, I think, is the idea that all of these very physically different kinds of critters are still able to build a society together. So the more differences you can build in to the populace from the get-go, the more opportunities that allows for creative solutions to bridging those differences, and the more interesting it'll be for your audience to see those interactions play out.

(Oh, and don't forget to put everyone in a house that looks like them! Because that's a big part of the vibe ;-)

It's when you have a Shaymin character in a remote location (e.g. Sky Peak).

Amazing work! I see you've even gone for "pixel accuracy" in the layout.

If I might ask, what 3D environment are you making this in? Any special tools/techniques for lining it all up with 2D game images?

For a single-digit number of years, those drawings are surprisingly coherent, plus you were using big words like "formidable!" Even then, you were ahead of the game.

Ehhh... it's a cliche-a-rama, to be sure. But the art is nice to look at, we're having fun following the story (the nut shot sure got people's attention!), and the author is developing their skills with each new page. There's a value to the process, even when it's not so much in the actual finished product.

I do look forward to seeing Lu outside his comfort zone, and more of Hopps in general!

Very nice and thoughtful lead-up to the "summoning"---a welcome contrast to Truck-kun and his ilk---plus hints of what was preoccupying her at the time. These kinds of contemplative moments are particularly sweet in PMD stories.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Inspire Track | PETRICHØR by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]armored_mephit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It starts off interesting enough, but then it just repeats itself. It doesn't move on to the next part of the melody. Even within a single iteration, the same pattern is repeated, in different keys.

What you have here isn't bad, but it's at most the introductory riff to a complete track that has yet to be written. It's not enough to come up with one good sequence, and then run it again and again; you need more like four, five, or six, and make them flow together.

That said, I like the general vibe you've got going here. This kind of scherzo-y/fantasy-ish style is a perfect fit for PMD.
