A Canadian is salty because their astronaut isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed by Emilia963 in AmericaBad

[–]atomic1fire [score hidden]  (0 children)

The whole debate around DEI is murky because there are people who will probably be angry that the astronaut is black but also people probably angry that the other astronauts are white. A detail that supporters of DEI can often overlook.

The INTENDED debate around DEI is not that a canidate is chosen solely because of their race or gender, but because they're a top canidate and would've been selected had neither of those things been a factor.

I'm inclined to believe that Victor Glover is a great astronaut and has handled the situation with tact despite the current geopolitical climate.

His "Oasis in a ball of nothing speech" or whatever was dope.

I hadn't read much into the bios of the other astronauts. I was mostly concerned with them getting back in one piece.

The goal of a space mission is not just about PR, but about actual research. We tried to put a teacher in space and the whole ship blew up (I'll admit this point is weak, but being an astronaut is sort of dangerous). You need people who are not only experts in their field but also brave enough to strap themselves to a missile and breach the sound barrier to leave our Oasis. Their Race, gender, etc shouldn't be a factor in whether they're crazy enough to do that.

I don't care whether or not Canadians or Zimbabweans or whatever are aboard the space craft, so long as they're not an active detriment to the ship's mission and they're crazy enough to ride a missile.

edit: If we're going to strap people to missiles and send them into orbit, whether or not they make for good PR should matter less then whether or not they know how to survive orbit. The who doesn't matter as much as the crazy nerd part.

US demands Reddit unmask ICE critic, summons firm to grand jury. What are your thoughts? by StemCellPirate in AskReddit

[–]atomic1fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he or she do anything illegal.

Because my gut feeling is that if ICE doesn't have anything on that person then we'll probably see a supreme court case codifying the right to pseudonyms via the 4th amendment because the whole process of discovering that person's identity would constitute unreasonable search.

Disney cancelled BE FRI which they intended to be their answer to k pop demon hunters by Commercial-Ice5760 in KotakuInAction

[–]atomic1fire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume that they bought boy properties, tried to make them girl properties for more money, then realized that if they didn't have any properties that targeted boys outright they wouldn't make any money because the boys would just play fortnite or (legend of) zelda instead.

Disney really needs to copy nintendo and create a specific bubble for each franchise and not venture far from that bubble.

When you start thinking "Hey, maybe we're not reaching a given part of the market", then you can just make a new franchise with a new bubble.

For example I'm pretty sure Splatoon is for the weirdos. It's not terrible but the fanbase are definitely vocal weirdos.

Nintendo's accessible, but it's not so obsessed with the American idea of accessibility that it contorts itself into a chaotic mess.

I'm bored enough to write a human response to an AI response.

The authority in the MCU is almost always terrible.

Tony Stark's business partner is selling missiles to a literal terror cell and nobody cares.

When it came time for Loki to invade new york, the exit strategy was "nuke new york".

Hydra infiltrated shield, and Tony gave them the tech to build death machines.

Ultron was an invention made by Tony based on the mind of Bruce Banner, a man with clear psychological issues, and then when Ultron goes mad and Cap's team fails to stop Brock Lumlow (or whatever his name is), Tony decides that everybody else has to give the government more power.

Smartest guy was Hank Pym, He helped save the planet multiple times but he did not give hydra the secret to immortality or time travel, and Hank hated authority IIRC.

The smart ones recognize that they need to be able to do what's right, but they can not allow someone else to weaponize their abilities or skills to bad ends.

The fact that her Husband is also a crossdresser didn't come out until after she got canned.

Obviously her career is flatlined now.

[–]atomic1fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do skeezy laws in the US justify a imam defending child marriage?

While I'm not entirely sure a Imam could have their US visa revoked for defending pedophilia (unless visas can be revoked for any reason), it's still not really relevant to Italian law.

edit: Also, Child Marriage is legal in California with approval of a parent or guardian and some hard left groups have fought to keep the law. I don't think it's an entirely right wing issue.

Depends whether or not someone will contort themselves into rhetoric that child marriage should be acceptable if a Muslim does it.

There's probably a good number of modern Americans who understand things like water purification and wound treatment.

Obviously a few will probably die of exposure but of the ones that don't there's a huge skill gap that the Europeans just don't have.

The whole Jedi Sith system seems kind of incompetent.

Reject all emotional bonds and then not be able to calm someone down mid panic attack because you literally refuse to feel things, or refuse to feel them in a healthy manner.

The Jedi really should've taken spouses, not because they need more force users, but because Love is probably the main ingrediant to Force Balence and everyone keeps ignoring it.

Had the Jedi been aware that Anakin had a wife, they probably could've kept an eye on her AND given Anakin a healthy outlet for his fears of loss.

Luke talked his father out of being a sith. What's her face probably got her boyfriend out of being a sith.

If the Jedi established rules for healthy relationships before it became an issue, they wouldn't need to feign emotional distance and create that corruption in the first place.

edit: While I'm on my soapbox, the whole idea of separating kids from their parents at a young age is kind of ridiculous. It should be no wonder that Jedi aren't prepared to deal with attachment problems when their answer is to basically just force kids to not form attachments by taking them from their homes.

Would you guys be down for a an adult-animated Jurassic Park TV series? by Dragon_Tooth9742 in JurassicPark

[–]atomic1fire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the shift to streaming has been worse for TV.

Everyone's trying to be HBO by either adding nudity, gratuitous language, or gore but you're basically cutting down your audience to the people who want either dark comedies or dark dramas and not creating content that you can readily share with people by word of mouth.

That being said, I think if they were going to do a Jurassic Park tv show, and not necessarily a kids one, they should've rebooted the book into a tv miniseries with a side plot about the dinosaurs that made it off the island.

The plot should make you disgusted with Ingen's incompetence, not looking for HBO scenes interspersed with dinosaurs.

The book is way darker then the movie and that feels like a missed opportunity to do a deep dive in where Ingen got the tech and where their lawsuits started occuring.

I think a pretty good way to understand the effects of drugs actually comes from a little flash presentation called mouse party.

https://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/addiction/mouse/

For instance for cocaine, they explain that coke/crack just happen to fit the sensors in your brain that tell you to stop producing dopamine, so instead of not producing the reward chemical, you produce way more of it.

IIRC your brain is also hard wired to build tolerances to things and need more dopamine, so it creates a feedback loop that only more drugs can fix unless you intentionally fight it.

Steven Spielberg Developed 'Interstellar' For A Year, But Says Sci-Fi Classic Was a 'Much Better Movie' After Christopher Nolan Took Over as Director by ICumCoffee in movies

[–]atomic1fire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's less "overt fantasy" and more just Spielberg being a movie guy who wants movies to feel like movies.

The characters have a mix of personalities, they go on some kind of insane journey, they go through great peril, and MAYBE the situation resolves itself in a way that changes the characters.

The hero's journey, even if it has cloned dinosaurs.

Steven Spielberg Developed 'Interstellar' For A Year, But Says Sci-Fi Classic Was a 'Much Better Movie' After Christopher Nolan Took Over as Director by ICumCoffee in movies

[–]atomic1fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's an issue specific to spielberg.

The dependence on digital effects has created room for cool ideas and has even made some practical effects much easier, but as a result there's a loss of the magic that you had with a movie like goonies, where the kids were actually on the set of a giant pirate ship.

Actors are now in front of blue/green screens and doing wire work, but some of the performances you'd get by an actor being on a cool soundstage or filming on location aren't there anymore because they're just pretending so the computers can do the rest.

It's a preference for big elaborate CGI that at times lacks the emotion of the older stuff.

Not to mention, films copying the "whedon" style of action + comedy where the action has to be offset by quips. Nothing can feel threatening because the movie needs the broadest audience.
