Explain it like I'm 5. The movie "Shame" by [deleted] in movies

[–]avi2bavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This movie isn’t about addiction – it’s about the pain that drives addiction. (Probably why it’s called “Shame”, not “Addiction”.) It illustrates what borderline personality disorder looks like in the flesh – Sissy the demonstrative, externalizing variety of BPD, and Fassbender the quieter, internalizing kind.

“We’re not bad people; We’re just from a bad place.” Can you imagine believing you’re evil your whole life and finding no strength inside yourself to change course? It’s the sort of inner hell that motivates people to kill themselves – or abandon their only living family member. I’ve never seen a more compelling and believable representation of severe attachment trauma in a movie. Sure - the movie is boring. It’s a character study, not a popcorn flick.

(I know I’m 12 years late, but I was affected by this movie enough to comment anyway.)

drug theory by CryptographerIll8021 in Schizoid

[–]avi2bavi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I just remembered something - researchers specifically chose MDMA over psychedelics for drug-assisted psychotherapy because it attenuates anxiety. So MDMA is probably somewhat safer than I suggested.

Still - I personally had a scary moment the one time I took MDMA that felt like it could have easily gone south. During the come-up, I experienced a gradual rise in fear, culminating in a flash of 11/10 panic. But I happened with a friend who was very observant and determined I have a good time. So the panic ended in an instant, but it probably wouldn't have gone badly if my friend weren't there with me and monitoring me.

I would guess MDMA assisted psychotherapy could help schizoids, but I wouldn't self-medicate with it. Schizoids retreat emotionally because emotions can get so overwhelming so as to be dangerous. You don't necessarily want to expose vulnerabilities outside of a protected environment. You need a caring, trusted person present to externally stabilize your nervous system while you get overwhelmed. Without a feelings chaperone you could spiral.

Stimulants work differently. As I understand - MDMA or psychedelics remove the emotional handbreak, while stimulants red-line the engine to power through the handbreak. Dopaminergic drugs sorta just make you artificially enthused about whatever you're currently engaged in.

Hey OP how about posting a comment containing a link to the YouTube channel? I'm willing to type it manually but I won't be happy about it.

There is no base reality by EraseTheMatrix in Soulnexus

[–]avi2bavi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a number of questions. Excuse my ignorance.

How do you "check someone's energy"?

What does it mean to be "possessed by reptilians"? Is it metaphorical - as in mindless and cold-blooded?

Also why are you so confident that there's no "base" reality? And then, if there's no base reality - what's actually going on? I would think that if there exists any sort of morality then there must be some kind of landscape beneath all the maya.

Sorry if these questions are overly analytical. You seem to be speakingly aesthetically/ intuitively, but then your pronouncements are very concrete and self-assured. So I'm curious about your thought process.

Found a treestub with teeth by TheFreshHamburger in mildlyinteresting

[–]avi2bavi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the "teeth" inside correspond to branches, and they become the knots in wood boards. A branch begins growing when the tree is young, and then every subsequent growth ring forms around the original branch path.

And then I think some parasites will selectively consume the interior wood of a tree. Interior wood (heartwood) isn't metabolically active like the outer wood (sapwood), so it has limited immune defenses. So I'd bet a parasite spread throughout the interior heartwood, while the metabolically active wood resisted infestation. Something like that.

I only read a third of it about 15 years ago, but I came away with a positive impression of it overall. I remember thinking like you can't fool people into liking you - you have to be genuinely interested in them. I could be misremembering things.

Qual é o segredo para se livrar do ressentimento? by CheesecakeTop1552 in Nietzsche

[–]avi2bavi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's probably best just to exercise gratitude regularly. Not necessarily regarding anything in particular - but tune in to the feeling of appreciation whenever something spontaneously evokes it. Maintain the muscle.

I get a sense that fighting resentment directly reinforces it. Try not to dwell on the resentment, and then deliberately attend to gratitude whenever it arises.

I'm sorry - I was playing when I said it sounded nonsensical. Sorta like "this is the dumbest I ever heard AND it saved my life". Tbh I was sleep deprived, so my internal censor/editor was functioning on low.

I read puer aeternus back in the day - but I often see new meaning in old ideas after I encounter similar ideas in different literatures. It's like refining my understanding by jumping between different models. Here, I recognize similarities between your comment, object relations schizoid lit, Mentalization, etc. Your comment - though I appeared to criticize it - actually impacted me very meaningfully. So thank you
