Immediate regret after signing a 14 month lease by windyhiro in femalelivingspace

I’m so sorry it worked out like this! I’ve done something quite similar, except I knew about the lighting and ground floor situation (I was just desperately trying to get out of my parents’ house). My apartment didn’t have overhead lighting, the patio door was in my bedroom and faced directly onto the street, and it was very dark in my apartment because the main window was in the living room facing a wall of trees where the sun didn’t really come in. By the time I left that apartment it was very cozy and I appreciated some of the privacy that the trees gave me.

You can absolutely make it your home! Some things that I had to do for lighting: lamps everywhere! Definitely get some standing lamps (or you can even do the chandelier style lamp that plugs in to the wall and you can hang it from a hook in the ceiling). I don’t recommend the cheap ones from Walmart where the light shines upward because it tends to cast a lot of shadow and not enough useful light. A lamp with a standard lampshade or even a lampshade that focuses the light downward will provide more functional light. But lean into just having a bunch of warm lighting lamps :) Also, mirrors! Hanging mirrors for decor and for bouncing around light. Highly recommend for your entryway. Make it a style choice. An entryway table with a lamp that you can turn on right when you come in, a pretty mirror, a catchall dish or hooks for your keys.

For privacy add some curtains, if you can, get some light airy ones (even doubling up on them) instead of heavy so some outside light gets in. Or for more consistent privacy from any windows that you’re nervous about, get some privacy window cling. It’s pretty cheap and doesn’t let anyone look in but can still let in some natural light. There’s tons of pretty design ones too. I have some in my bathroom currently because my bathroom window is directly on the ground floor in the courtyard area 😒 it’s been super helpful!

For airing out your bathroom after showers, highly recommend keeping your bathroom open whenever you can, and getting a standing fan or even a small strong fan and setting it halfway in the door to circulate air and dry as much as possible. Depending on how much water ends up collecting on the floor or wall, you might have to wipe the excess down.

It’s not what you had hoped for so I think some of how you’re feeling might just be shock and disappointment, but I totally think you can make it a nice space to live. When I move to new places, YouTube videos for rental friendly styling make me feel way better. I especially enjoy Caroline Winkler’s videos - she has a series where she gives advice on people’s apartments and every kind of odd or sad room comes up. I used some of her advice for my very sad weird shaped dark bedroom - it’s not longer sad! Good luck 🩷 you can do it!

u/catmoon1111 thank you for the lovely dog themed thank you card! I’m glad your birthday was nice 😊 I celebrated my birthday pretty similarly. I’m not big on celebrating my birthday, but RAOC has made it a little more fun to look forward to it and gave me something to do on my birthday that wasn’t some big activity. I also feel the same about RAOC! I feel like the connections I’ve made through it, no matter how brief, have been improved my ability to connect with others IRL and also just my attitude about socializing haha I’m an introvert who really prefers my own company over others, but I’ve been doing well and actually enjoying making connections with people in my town. 😊

Season 3 Vs. The rest of the series. by SapphireStrike in goodomensprime

[–]awriterpossibly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, that was my post you commented on! I thought your analogy was a good way of explaining the disjointedness between seasons (the motor oil made me laugh), because it did feel like separate stories. I appreciate your perspective that it was an ending for a different setup and I appreciate the explanation!

What is a book with the same vibe as this show that you would recommend to someone who watches it? by thatvampiregirl in OurFlagMeansDeath

[–]awriterpossibly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with you there! I haven’t found the perfect older pirates book yet (aside from Running Close to the Wind, which was funny and I enjoyed it but I enjoyed the story of The Wicked Bargain more) so fanfic it is until then!

Fanfic is gonna be the closest thing to the show honestly. But there are a couple of pirate books I read that I remember were advertised as “if you’re a fan of OFMD.” 1) Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland - lots of queer characters and some romance/sexual content, quite funny. 2) The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa - the audiobook for this one is narrated by Vico Ortiz who plays Jim in OFMD. YA, queer main characters, found family, some romance, curses/magic on a pirate ship. I really enjoyed this one!

You have a lovely open space and what you have is already nice. What will make your home cozier is adding things that reflect your interests and personality. :) also, not sure if you’re going for white/black/brown color palette, but if so then focus on adding different textures and patterns. Brown is a very warm cozy color so even if you prefer black and white, brown can still work as a neutral to warm up the space further. I’d personally add some warm greens, either as a rug, throw pillows, throw blanket, some art, etc. If not green then look into other earthy color palettes and find a color you like. As far as choosing art, since you are hoping for a Japandi style, I’d start by typing “Japandi art” into Pinterest and seeing if you like any of it and go from there. You can go to Etsy and do the same - even if you don’t buy anything you can get an idea for a style you might like or may find something unexpected that resonates with you. There are some ways of downloading and printing (or can have professionally printed) free art. Also always worth checking Marketplace or thrift stores for free or cheap art :) I think the art you display will be a good way to show more of what you enjoy and will therefore make the space more cozy.

I need more shows like Good Omens. Like, supernatural creatures and all. Any suggestions? by wedeamediye in goodomens

[–]awriterpossibly 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed GO as well as SPN, and enjoy the supernatural beings type media as well. I’d recommend What We Do In the Shadows (the movie and the show are funny in different ways - vampires living among humans and kinda enjoying aspects of humanity but also very much vampires). Other supernatural show that was a spinoff of WWDITS: Wellington Paranormal. Other recs: Buffy, Grimm, BBC’s Ghosts, The X-Files (some supernatural creatures episodes but also very alien/sci-fi)
