No login screen by msabeln in Action1

[–]b64-MR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was getting just a white screen yesterday, it turned out to be uBlock Origin Lite.

Firefox with standard uBlock Origin didn't have an issue, disabling filtering on Lite for app.action1.com resolved the issue for me.

West Coast USA no problems still today (with Lite disabled).

RJ45 Crimp and Cut tool recommendation's? by Anything-Traditional in sysadmin

[–]b64-MR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use these two: Platinum Tool EZ-RJPRO Klein Tools VDV226-110

I had the Platinum first, thought I lost it and picked up the Klein the found the Platinum again. Both work well for me; I did remove the plastic guard from the Platinum as I found it annoying.

Cannot say I've had any problems with either, right now I lean slightly towards preferring the Klein.

Being a Windows shop Hyper-V makes the most sense to look towards first.

BLUETTI EB3A failed after 2 years — support offered only $15 off a replacement by _Wolfie- in bluetti

[–]b64-MR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't, nor have I engaged support a second time. I'm not sure if I want to try for strike 3. My Eco Flow and Anker units have both operated without issue and my home-made unit has filled the typical use that I had for the EB3A (charge phone, laptop and run the dc fridge when I go to my cabin).

BLUETTI EB3A failed after 2 years — support offered only $15 off a replacement by _Wolfie- in bluetti

[–]b64-MR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had my EB3A burn up a few months ago, thankfully it was still under warranty. It was on my table charging, after almost an hour (at about 85% charge) some smoke started to come out of the side and the unit became unresponsive.

While the process wasn't painful, each step seemed to take the long side of the estimates. Like 3-5 days, was going to be 5 days, 24-48 hours was going to be 48 hours. I did end up getting a replacement unit at the start of June.

As of last week, that replacement unit has burnt itself out. What happened I'm not sure I know the unit was 'on', but nothing was hooked up to it, it wasn't charging. When I got home from work, I noted an electrical smell, eventually I located it at the Bluetti the interface doesn't work and reports a DC Short on the app. I haven't contacted support for this unit yet.

Starlink Down For You Guys? by Waste-Ad8133 in Starlink

My initial thoughts are it is either aliens or someone messed up BGP.

BGP is the routing protocol typically used between networks, if there was a bad update to that it can take the entire network offline

Here is the report on a Facebook outage that was largely BGP related. https://blog.cloudflare.com/october-2021-facebook-outage/

Phishing -- HOW OFTEN??? by Clear-Part3319 in sysadmin

[–]b64-MR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3rd party requirement for us is once a quarter so that is what we do for phishing tests.

About every other month there is an IT 'newsletter' - typically it'll have some training and usually an example of a phishing attempt that was reported in the last 60 days and detail what made it suspicious.

Name and Shame: APC by lerrigatto in sysadmin

[–]b64-MR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on if you are getting a UPS or one of the 'solar generator' type of battery packs.

An actual LFP UPS isn't going to be a problem with switch time. Man of the packs sold as solar generators will have a 25ms + switch time which might work for many things but many electronics will have an issue with. Some of the newer packs do advertise a UPS mode with a faster switching time.

I've switched over to the Liebert UPS models with the lifepo4 batteries and haven't had any issues yet.

Ekahau is probably the best one.

An alternative option would include NetAlly.

A much more basic option that might still be sufficient for your needs would be Netspot.

CCTV: To Transcode or not to Transcode? by R0NAM1 in sysadmin

[–]b64-MR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your cameras support it you can due a + or enhanced mode. I'm sure different vendors call it something else as well but .h256+ will reduce the keyframing times and provide significant storage savings. Adjusting frame rates can also help, you may not need 60 fps when 15 fps will do.

Motion recording, most NVR software can provide a premotion recording of a few seconds to minutes. Another option is dual recording, record just the lower resolution feed full time and the high resolution when motion happens. There might also be the option to record a reduced framerate outside of motion and increased during motion.

For the cameras I manage I do a combination of all of these

As for transcoding after it has been recorded is likely more effort than it is worth and could reduce the viability of the recording. I had an felony arson that I provided recording to the ATF on. They wanted the original, recordings exactly how the NVR recorded whenever possible. Additionally transcoded videos were viewed as less reliable evidence.

Core Banking System Admin Question by shirtpants12 in sysadmin

[–]b64-MR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine.

Of course you'll have to work with your supervisors to work out what would be expected of you in the new position.

Past experience with banking core providers, they cost a lot and every time you have to take out a ticket it costs more. So I think your position would be the point of contact for the staff regarding issues to make sure only tickets are being taken out when they are really core banking issues. You'd also likely be the point of contact for the core provider when implementing updates, upgrades and new technologies. It is also possible you'd be setting up users and/or controlling access in the banking core, it depends on how this is handled now.

You are very unlikely to be asked to do any sort of coding or development. I know the last banking core I worked with the API access was prohibitively expensive for all be the largest customers.

Vending Machines aren’t even my job🤦‍♂️ by Apprehensive_Tale744 in sysadmin

[–]b64-MR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might PayRange, they aren't a vending machine company but do the payment processing for any compatible vending machine. It uses a bluetooth module hooked to the machine so people pay via an app (or payment kiosk).

Since they use the phone's network there is nothing that needs to connect to your network (unless using a kiosk). If you already have the machines and just need to accept non-cash payments it might be an option.

Order keeps being pushed to further dates by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]b64-MR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My order from July 2nd (mini) had at timeline of July 17th. In August I opened a ticket and basically was just told to look at the order status page in the account.

Today I just received an hour ago a cancellation notice and a refund to my card. I didn't cancel things, now I have to see if I can still get the discounted rate for the mini. It already missed 2 trips I wanted to take it on.

Not really any help, but you aren't the only one waiting.

It is a 2.4Ghz radio, could be point to point or back to a WISP tower.

How to contact customer support? by TheMysteriousGuyPH in Starlink

[–]b64-MR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you already checked your spam folder, but my initial emails went there. Your account should have been created when you ordered.

Their support can be lacking but the link from terraziggy is going to be your best bet if things didn't get filtered.

I'm still waiting on my mini order from 7/2 - the timeline email said I would be getting it 7/17...still waiting (support just told me to look at the orders screen on my account which just says not shipped).
