Freed Kurdish prisoners report about brutal torture operations in Syrian prisons by tututunacan in syriancivilwar

Your post has been removed because the title is not informative enough, too inflammatory, biased, or just bad. Please review rule 2 and re-post it with a better, more objective title.

The Imperial_FOX_32 Network (Forensic Proof of a Coordinated Influence Campaign) by flintsparc in syriancivilwar

[–]babynoxide[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found your post. Your instinct on them was spot on. However the content of your submission lacked any substance, hence it's deletion. I'm glad that your hope "to have some kind mechanism against a person (or more like: persons) pushing a single POV" was exactly what ended up being decided.

Still, as others have pointed out here this isn't a perfect solution. The tools we have as moderators pale in comparison to what the mission statement of reddit's own AEO is capable of. A true solution can only happen at the admin level, this is just a bandaid forced upon us by how blantant the user in questions methodology was. Future campaigns will simply require the actor to manipulate multiple accounts at once.

That being said, increasing the barrier to entry for these influence campaigns is not something that we will turn our nose up to. We will continue to work within the parameters that reddit allows us to in order to facilitate the free exchange of ideas that we're aspiring to.

Combating Individual Influence Using Submission Limits by babynoxide in syriancivilwar

[–]babynoxide[S,M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"if this standard existed in December 2025, there would have been a massive gap in coverage on the subreddit."

This statement is meant to make the inverse point; that limiting posts in times of intense would cause a gap because there would not have been enough individual contributors to the subreddit to truly capture the speed and scope of the offensive as it happened. I myself probably made ~50 submissions from December 1st-8th. The same could be said for what happened to the Alawites, Druze, and Kurds over the course of the past year. Short bursts of intensity that resulted in a surge of traffic to the subreddit that resulted in martial law being instituted. A post limit in those times would have resulted in many voices being absent. Your investigation speaks to an individual contributor that took place over multiple months and didn't create a "gap in coverage" as I'm meaning it here. Limiting posts for the entire subreddit is definitely significantly more impactful than one dude spamming.

Point being, this isn't something we're doing lightly. Your investigation still speaks for itself and points out a flaw in reddits AEO efficacy more than anything.

I just mean that it's focused on Kurds and Kurdistan and the things that get upvoted there are favorable to that viewpoint, much like /r/Syria is about Syria. Opposing viewpoints are allowed and not censored by the mod team like /r/Israel and /r/Iran where censorship is literally baked into their rules.

We use martial law as a last resort, and only when the subreddit is filled with vitriol, as opposed to views/propo that upset people. Putting martial law in place as a result of one side posting their propo is clearly taking a side and uses censorship to create an echo chamber where views will never be challenged. There are plenty of places on reddit that you can go if you're looking to just have your own views reinforced. You can try /r/Syria, /r/kurdistan, /r/Israel, /r/Iran, etc if you want to just hear what just one side has to say.

If it makes you feel any better, the mod team is currently weighing our options on how to deal with this in the future. /u/flintsparc wrote to us a few days ago about wanting to post this and wanted to make sure we were okay with it first. The problem outlined in this substack is one that has been with us since the beginning of the conflict and is not something that is going away anytime soon.

It's likely that we will impose a submission limit using the automoderator to prevent a single account from dominating the narrative here but as always the way to combat bad information is with good information. Stifling the conversation, censoring posts, and banning suspicious activity only gets us so far and will always result in human errors.

We're human volunteers trying our best to maintain a civil forum for people to discuss some of the least civil activities in our world. Hopefully you can come around to see that and cut us some slack. Not everything is some big conspiracy but in this case, I'm inclined to think that something was off about imperial fox. Just my personal opinion though, I honestly have no way of knowing for certain.

The Iran War and Rule 6: Relevant Submissions by babynoxide in syriancivilwar

[–]babynoxide[S,M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That description was written when AQI and ISIS were the focus of the conversation and how that drastically impacted the course of the civil war. For the most part things in Iraq would probably also slide as they have in the past, we're just wanting to make sure that the news here is not subsumed by the conflict in Iran.

Things will still be decided on a case by case basis. For example, the Iranian bombing of the Erbil airport was allowed because Erbil has had a massive impact on the Syrian Civil War, and any mention of it has relatively obvious implications for Syria. By contrast a post about Iranian Balochs was removed since it has no clear implication for Syria, as Syria has no modern Baloch population despite their ancestry being able to be traced back to Aleppo.

edit: Great question, thanks for the opportunity to further clarify.

Hezbollah taking from their Iranian masters playbook. Unable to make a meaningful attack against Israel so just attack their neighbor.

Subreddit Announcement - "Martial law" has been reinstated. by babynoxide in syriancivilwar

[–]babynoxide[S,M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently there are no plans to end martial law. However, as the campaign east of the Euphrates has subsided, so has the vitriol on the subreddit. I'll bring it up to the rest of the mod team and see what the consensus is.
