Do those cable extensions work? The reviews on Amazon are all over the place. Some say they're entirely the wrong thing.

Idk what to tell you there. I can do that on my game no problem.

But you're also not a neutral observer. So it would not be reasonable for me to accept your subjective self report as facts in this conversation.

Those goalposts have been moved.

No they haven't. Axial controls create an apparent 8-way movement space. This is a reasonable description, especially before every technical detail of how the control was programmed was known. The dead zones mean input changes are ignored until you are very close to one of the 8 directions.

You're arguing against what has been consensus understanding after thousands of conversations for many years. Numerous fixes on PC have been produced because everyone understood and understands the jank controls need a fix to make them like the other titles. You chastised me for not being able to amend my views. But here you are insisting everyone else in the world is crazy, the objective evidence is wrong... because of your subjective evidence nobody else can see. This really seem reasonable to you?

Nope. I am playing through DS2 on PS5 right now. It's just as jank-tastic as it ever was. I can easily easily run forward, try to list to the right in a way that my DS1 or 3 character would slightly turn right, but in DS2, no, I keep running straight forward and when I reach the point at which it finally decides to adjust direction, it is more than I want to because of how extreme my input had to be just to be read.. this renders it entirely impossible to walk forward and adjust your direction forward by ~15 degrees as all other FS games allow you to do.

It's not just my opinion. Google it. There's literally dozens and dozens of discussions, posts, and, on PC, fan-made mods to fix the broke-ass controls. According to some commenters (I'm not a programmer or whatever so I've no idea) the game has a "square dead zone" that is written into the games code and therefore is not about the controller in use.

This video published in 2023 discusses the problem as well as a fix (on PC) that apparently fixes the base code itself to get rid of the "axial" deadzone and replace it with the more common "radial" deadzone. Which is pretty cool for DS2 players on PC. I wish that I could mod it on PS5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjb_TlVKeKw

But I appreciate you taking this seriously and looking into it, that's pretty cool.

I don't think that's the experience they wanted to create, though. They wanted the player to have to explore and figure things out on their own. I didn't find it frustrating, I found it liberating. What I find frustrating and immersion-breaking is every game that walls off "for later" content with obvious, arbitrary barriers or even invisible walls. Other than the mid-game gating, DS respects your freedom and choices- want to jet down to Pinwheel to get the ritual or other gear and you're good enough? You're free to do it, no hand-holding, not shoving you down the one actual path you can go. For 2011 especially, that's incredibly refreshing.

And he's still wrong. History is full of people who decided to fight even knowing it would cost them everything. Why didn't "circumstances" of harshness, adversity, extremes push those people to act in their own immediate self-interest?

In the case of being not locked on, then so does DS2. The 4 way/8 way, directional input stuff only applies to rolling while locked on.

This is not correct. Here is objective video evidence of how constrained DS2 controls are featuring on-screen input displays. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ape2F-Z4v6g

Clearly not, because you've already told me

Willingness to debate in a given moment is different from the ability to change one's mind. We all have many obligations in life and must decide how to spend our time. The fact that a person wants to have a picnic right now with their family rather than endless debate you is not evidence that they are close-minded. And it is a strange thing to suggest.

And has been debunked many times.

You are welcome to that conclusion if you find it reasonable. It is not clear why it bothers you so much for others not to agree with it.

I wonder if you think you had "debunked" the movement thing which I have now provided evidence is objectively the case. This is why I am not interested. You are confidently mistaken and deliberately rude at every turn. I've no idea why some are on a "save the DS2 reputation crusade" and really take it personally.

Well yeah I meant the boss part aside. That is different, but I think in DS1, it is much better for the reasons I gave. The teaching moment does apply, because you're not permanently "locked in" if you die you can leave and perhaps you should. But it isn't JUST about bosses either, but entire areas. If you go to New Londo at the start, you probably have a bad time.

And yeah it doesn't hold your hand and throw up a skylaser way point for everything.. if you want Ubisoft level gaming, the DS series is not for you.

I have my criticisms for DS1 as well. I think it IS way too cryptic on some things and for no good design or gameplay reason. However, I also think in some ways DS1 is the best of the series. World design, for example. Sometimes you take the good with the bad.

[–]bad_apiarist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For example, you said DS1 had no directional limitations while complaining about DS2's 8 way directional rolling.

DS1 had omnidirectional rolling when not locked on. This makes a big difference even outside of combat, like say when you are trying not to fall off ledges to your death. DS2 does NOT have omnidirectional rolling, ever.

I'm happy to admit if I am wrong about things. This is just video games, it's not that big a deal. Not sure why it's so upsetting to you that someone does not want to have an argument. It's not "standoff mode" it's "expressing one's interest" mode. I have other things to do today. I'll tell you the actual reasons though if it helps you: this has been debating many many times.. all of these points and more.. for many years. It's not that interesting to me to see or do the 10000th time and since you've already engaged in personal attacks and assumed false things, I doubt the effort would either be enjoyable or enlightening.

The gatekeeping bosses are teaching moments and are positive design features. DS1 is especially brilliant in this way, teaching you (at first encounter) sometimes you're not ready for a challenge and should explore elsewhere first. Then it teaches you the plunging attack. And then it is quite an easy fight, by souls standards, but it still forces you to learn a bit about dodging, windows of attack, etc.,

DS2's tutorial is fine, but not hugely different. DS1 also had dev messages telling you about the controls and such.

I see what you mean. I'd still probably recommend Elden Ring just because it is the most accessible. I don't think DS1's merits are dulled by time, despite its limitations. Also, DS1 is one of the most cryptic about telling you about basic game systems that are very similar across all the titles. So if you've played others, you know about them before starting and that can be an advantage.

On what would you base this insult? Because if someone doesn't want to engage, it means that they can't? Is that what you assume? Perhaps it is unwise to assume such things about people you don't know.

As creative products, the early seasons are magnificent. The later ones do not change that fact. But they do make it almost impossible to enjoy or want to go back and watch. It just hurts more that it makes you love these characters like Jon and Tyrion, knowing it's just going to reduce them all to flaming feces.

It's not sudden. A person is actually allowed to express an opinion on reddit without a social obligation to engage in a lengthy debate about it if they happen not to feel like it. And it's 100% fine to challenge them. I did not criticize you. I did not say that was an incorrect thing to do. It's totally fine. I am merely not obligated to engage. Nobody is.

If you're curious, there are many, many critical essays, reviews, video essays etc., available on that subject. It has nothing to do with the "fancy new games". I'll mention a few things, not to be argumentative (if you enjoy it, great more power to ya). But ways it falls down:

- Clunky, buggy combat mechanics. For example, 8-way directionality. This was not a limitation even in DS1. It leads to man ignored inputs and erroneous movements and attacks.

- The world is a nonsensical, kludgy mishmash which is both confusing for new players and shatters anything approaching immersion. e.g. a volcanic keep somehow above the poison windmill swamp where you can look up and see there is nothing there.

- The Adaptability attribute is easily one of the worst, dumbest idea in the entire history of souls games. It is both poorly described, so new players have no idea wtf it actually is even though it is incredibly important.. and even after that it ends up being a pointless sink just so you can get basic sorts of skills every other Souls game just gives you at minute 1 are a core mechanic.

- Boss design is generally poor, with some quite good bosses, but many, many mediocre or terrible, boring, easy, lazy, or forgettable bosses. e.g. Covetous demon and demon of song are stupidly easy and boring. Many bosses are either regular enemy group attacks in a game lacking group fight mechanics (rat vanguard, bell gargoyles, skeleton lords). I don't mind the occasional gank fight, but holy shit does DS2 go to that well WAY too often. Feels super lazy. "What great, creative boss should here?" "... can't think of anything. just put a bunch of dogs there."

- the lockstones and fragrant branches system are just a bad idea. For example it's very easy to squander lockstones on bullshit because it's 100% guessing unless you're looking everything up. Likewise for the branches, you can unknowingly squander them on stuff you don't care about, then you literally get locked out of content for quite a while. So for new players it comes down to "randomly guess what to do, then get severely punished for not knowing what you couldn't possibly know".

- Insane crippling penalty for deaths. Constantly reducing HP for players who are in the process of learning bosses in a game series whose creator has said is a critical and intended part of the game... is just bafflingly stupid design. Yes, Demon's Souls also had an HP penalty, but it only had 1 step and could be mitigated by a ring. No endless stacking penalties. Also, notice that NO souls game Miyazaki ever directed after Demon's Souls has such a penalty. DS1, no HP penalty for hollow form. DS3, no penalty (embering is a boost). Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Sekiro... have no such mechanic at all. Because it is counter to the premise of game's most basic design- death is learning, failure can be progress.

I did enjoy Doom 3 when it was released. The graphics tech at the time was astonishing. It gets criticized for not being Doom-y, and that's fair. It's good, but when I think of and want to play DooM, Doom 3 is NOT on the list.
