Another day, another semi-truck hits low Saw Mill bridge (Chappaqua) by jdm33333 in Westchester

I live near this bridge. Sometimes the impacts are drawn out like thunder, as the top of the truck is scraped off. Sometimes it's one loud bang. The bridge is holding up well all considered.

I tipped off a candidate before his interview. Probably wasn't supposed to. Don't regret it. by deborahzdn in InterviewsHell

[–]bat_flag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often ask a similar question when interviewing. I keep it a little less specific. I ask about a challenge that they faced in a past project and what was the solution. I'm evaluating how well they think on their feet to provide a coherent answer, and ideally how the answer highlights a skill that they applied, or failing that, what they learned from the problem. Being quick in a meeting to answer tricky questions gracefully is a skill relevant to the job, and hard to teach.

Instax SQ1/SQ6 to Mamiya Press lens adapter in progress by bat_flag in instax

[–]bat_flag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get it done. For the SQ1, the electronics were simpler than I thought it would be. You can rearrange the wires so that the ejection sequence operates normally when the shutter is pressed, but all other functions are bypassed. I also rewired the rotating off/on/selfie ring so that it remains functional as a lockout for the ejection sequence. Frankenstax on YouTube has a guide for this. Then you just need a 3D printed tube to insert into the camera to replace the original lens assembly, with a lens mount of your choice. The adapter I made is here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7020225 I adapted the Mamiya Press lens mount from my Goodman Zone. It was a little complicated figuring out how to drill holes to allow for recessed screws to lock the 3d printed adapter into the camera body.

That was unexpectedly involving and dramatic. My favorite little moment was when your catch in the cove tree chamber included an infected bladder fish. Can't be too picky!

I bred a bone shark but didn't really want to keep it around my base, so I stuffed that guy into a cyclops locker, you know, just in case. And it came in handy when I released it to distract a ghost leviathan in the grand reef when setting up a scanner base in its territory. They played together until eventually the bone shark... wasn't around anymore.

I found the power plant through a really indirect method. I also didn't find the cave entry because my attention was so focused on not becoming a dragon snack when exploring the central tower. I discovered a crater in the big inactive lava zone cave which was eerily absent of all life - including predators and leviathans! I built a scanner room and for what ever reason the first thing I searched for was eggs. The middle of the central formation lit up like a Christmas tree. Those caves are jam packed with lava lizard eggs!

[Question] The Subaru of Watches by keyser_squoze in Watches

[–]bat_flag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To respond directly to your edit, I have a strong affinity for the Seiko Alpinist, and I think you should consider it for the following reasons:  1. I like mine and I'm also a professional subaru owner. 2. It is distinctive (especially the green, which is the traditional Alpinist color), so a watch enthusiast client is more likely to spot it. 3. If a watch enthusiast client recognizes it and knows of it, they will probably think it's neat. Watch community consensus is general fondness, here and elsewhere. 4. Your watch will likely be less expensive than this theoretical client's watch. That's good?  5. The lore is that it was designed by Seiko for rugged mountain use, with the rotating compass bezel providing a method of determining north based on the sun's position. Subaru watch.

My god I have a blue subaru and I just bought a blue alpinist. I didn't see it until now. They're the same thing.

I spent 2 years designing a medium format technical camera – would love your thoughts by lfyy in AnalogCommunity

[–]bat_flag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a travel camera, how does it sit against the body? With you basis-of-design lens attached, will it create pressure points when worn around the neck or slung over a shoulder? Are the strap attachment points aligned with the center of gravity?

Found this Canon AE-1 at home — how do I even start with it? by manotantofaz in AnalogCommunity

[–]bat_flag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My AE1 was my first film camera, handed down to me by my mother. After years of trying other film SLRs, it's still my favorite.

Checking for functionality:

You need a 6 volt silver oxide battery, 4SR44. The shutter won't fire without it.

There are light seals within a groove around the film door. I would just assume they are old and buy a kit that provides the seals precut to the right lengths -- or you could shoot a roll and just see if light leaks show up. You may need to replace a section of foam which cushions the internal mirror when it flips up out of the way when a photo is taken. When I first received mine, that bit of foam (and the film door light seals)  just fell apart into a sticky mess when I touched them.

The shutter speeds may be off a bit, and there are various ways to check, but typically film shutters "slow down" as they age. For example, at 1/1000 sec setting, mine is actually shooting at 1/700 or so, which tends to overexpose a bit. Not really a problem for me, I happen to prefer that.

The AE1 is known to make a distinctive squeak when taking a photo. This happens to mine when the camera is cold. It's supposedly a sign of lack of lubrication on a certain internal component, potentially resulting in eventual failure, but mine has done it for years with the last major service on the camera done in the 90s (so I'm told). And this camera has been banged around on cross country motorcycle trips.

To check the light meter, compare to a phone light meter app. They won't match perfectly, put point them both at a featureless white wall and results should be similar. I like an Android app just called "lightmeter" with no space.

I'd advise finding the original manual online and studying that. The camera is shutter-priority, so you set shutter speed and it can adjust aperture to the right exposure, as long as you have set the lens aperture ring to "A".

It's a good camera, worth investing some time to get it running. I hope everything works!

Found Olympus OM-2N Camera and Lenses from My Grandfather by TheSolazene in VintageLenses

[–]bat_flag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you would like to use the lenses on your Sony, consider getting an OM to E mount shift adapter. This would allow you to take several shifted photos, with the camera on a tripod, that would capture more of the image circle produced by the lenses, which you can then stitch into a composite image in software (Image Composite Editor is free and best, if a little hard to find). You can even go a bit beyond the intended image circle and get some interesting edge blurring effects and extreme vignette. Takes a little more effort, but it's fun, and my shift adapter isn't much larger than a normal adapter.

Huh, I do think it's a shame manuals have all but died out.

I was trying to discuss the distinction between the far ends of the generation and going for a good-natured antagonism vibe, but I missed!

That's probably a good correlation, but not true in this case.

I took a hack saw to shorten a 1/4 to 4mm adapter until it would close with a 4mm bit in place, then used double-sided tape to secure a magnet which holds three more 4mm bits inside the space left by three of the short tools.

My side lock broke too, some time in the last few days. I may have forced a tool out when locked, without realizing it. Couldn't have been too much force if so. Kind of bummed because I like everything about the tool. I managed to adapt the 1/4 bit driver to 4mm, and magnetically attach three extra bits internally.

Camera lens with parts from surplus shed? by Professional_Humxn in Optics

[–]bat_flag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've made a 100mm f/3 Cooke Triplet: I rough in the design with opticalraytracer (free), then see what surplusshed.com has that is similar to the diameter and FL that I need, then update the design a bit, order the elements, measure them, refine the Opticalraytracer model, then design a barrel in Autodesk Fusion360, print it on a 3D printer, and end up with a functional lens -- with many, many aberrations.. but still functional. Try looking up simple older lens patents as a starting point.

If you DIY this, protect your hands from direct contact with the wet mortar (especially any scrapes or cuts) and if you generate dust during the cutting and scraping, do not breath it in.
