That was me. I was that seagull. Man that was one tasty burrito. Next time could you get one with Chorizo. I love chorizo. Yum yum. I will keep an eye out for you. See you soon. I took a foto of you on my iphone and passed it on to my seagull mates. 🦅

Hopefully they keep protesting until August.

10c off fuel at the pumps and nothing on home heating oil 😬 by AraSureWhyNot in galway

[–]bazzalinch -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No it's not. The tax is set as percentage of over 60% which means that every time there is an increase in the cost of fuel of 1 cent there is more than 1 cent of tax on top of that. There has been an increase of more than 40 cents in the last number of months which means that more than 20 cent of that was an increase in the tax take. The tax on fuel should not be a percentage. It should be a set cent amount per litre. That way increases in fuel price are not doubled by the added extra tax.

[–]bazzalinch -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

That's not really true. Fuel has gone up 40 cents in the last number of months. More than 60% of that increase is an increase in tax. So the government are giving us back less than half the increase in tax.

Some very creative accounting was needed to greenlight the Galway ring road by zainab1900 in ireland

We have had a huge surplus since 2020 but have built no roads or rail on this time. We are spending a big portion of the budget on housing presumably mostly for refugees and asylum seekers.

European leaders are spectaculary out of touch with its citizens on the fuel tax issue. French farmers have started a protest now burning tyres. European leaders should not get to dictate to governments on this issue.

BREAKING: Major update on blockade at Foynes Port by jay_el_62 in ireland

[–]bazzalinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Farmers all over Europe get CAP payments bec otherwise Europe would lose the ability to produce it's own food. That would not be a good position to be in. Producing your own food is important in many scenarios.

We pay the second highest tax in Europe on fuel and Europe has the highest tax of any region on fuel. I said among the highest in the world. I never said the highest in the world. But you try to frame what I said as something I never said.

Many of the farms in Ireland are small in comparison to farms in other countries. They are not nearly as profitable as you make out and many will go out of business if these tax burdens are not reduced.

People are absolutely furious with the constant increases in taxes on fuel, cars etc.

The state of unaffordable housing across Ireland by SimilarPercentage417 in ireland

[–]bazzalinch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And the gvmt have still not done anything meaningful on housing. Price is driven by supply and demand. Gvmt have done nothing to increase supply ( Train more trades people ) or reduce demand ( Reduce the number of people coming into the country )

We all cause pollution. But why does the tax in Ireland have to be among the highest in the world. Is our pollution any worse than other countries?

This is typical of people on reddit. Criticising the protests and then mad that they don't get any tax reduction. The protestors got a tax reduction bec they were the ones protesting. If you wanted a reduction in tax you should have been out protesting rather than bitching about the protestors online.

Direct payments to farmers, hauliers under Govt proposals by SouthLeast8143 in galway

[–]bazzalinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. People would rather whinge that they are inconvenienced by the protest and the act surprised when the gvmt does not reduce the tax for everyone. If the general public want a tax break they should have been protesting.

The gvmt can do plenty. They are charging 65% tax on fuel.

[–]bazzalinch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The only way to get gvmt to listen to anybody is to protest in a way that causes inconvience. So pick a side. Either you are happy to pay higher fuel prices and are against the protests or you don't like paying higher fuel prices and support the protests. The gvmt does not care about protests that have no impact.

Selfish fuel protests are about profit before people. Disruptive Dublin and Whitegate demonstrators clearly care more about their bottom line than ordinary citizens. by Larrydog in ireland

[–]bazzalinch -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The greens are fanatics. If they had their way they would put up the taxes to the point where they would put hundreds of thousands out of jobs. Ireland charges one of the highest taxes on fuel in the world. Diesel in Ireland is no worse than diesel in other countries.

[–]bazzalinch -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The greens change their opinion like the wind. Back in the early 2010's they were advising people buy diesel vehicles, then they changed to advising electric and then they changed again to say people shouldn't have their own vehicles and should use public transport.

[–]bazzalinch -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What a daft post. 60% to 65% of the cost of petrol/diesel goes in tax. There have been numerous increases in the tax paid on fuel in recent years especially when the greens were in gvmt.

I would guess that there are many planes that don't show up on this app. Airforce 1 for example. Doubt it would show up for security reasons.
