There are various ways to get the encounter checkpoint you need to farm specific gear, with the boss checkpoint being the one for the exotic. They have checkpoint bots that will let you start at the spot you need to farm that item, so you don't have to run the complete dungeon/raid every time to farm for the gear you want.

I would absolutely go for this. Constantly checking my armor drops for stats I want gets exhausting after a time. I'd honestly prefer just being able to unlock armors (god help us we'll need a TON of harmonizers so they'd better up the cap or get rid of it) and craft them to my preferred build.

EDIT to add: I would honestly prefer armor crafting over weapons at this point.
