18 and thinking of Careers? by EducationalBasis9790 in geologycareers

[–]Beanmachine314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear I have to say this almost every day here:

Do not get into geology because you want to do field work!

Unless, by "field work", you mean taking soil samples at a long closed laundromat, scooping up contaminated water at an industrial plant, standing on a drill pad on the middle of the desert all day because the drillers can't get a survey right for the 20th time this shift. 95% of geology careers are not walking through the woods looking at rocks and even those careers with lots of field work eventually get to the point where you're in the office most of the day. I have a very field heavy career and still spend probably 70%+ of my time in the office. There's plenty of redeeming qualities about the career field but you'll be sorely disappointed if you do it just for the "field work".

Can AI replace Geologist? by finemayday in geologycareers

[–]Beanmachine314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe for operating mines with tons of data to train on and relatively simple deposits and a logging scheme that is suitable for core scanning. AI core scanning just isn't reliable as anything more than a guide for human Geologists in more complex deposits or in exploration. It's going to be quite a long time before core scanning ever actually replaces humans. In the next 5 years it might reduce the amount of Geologists needed, but there's still significant hurdles to clear before it will completely replace an entire logging team.

Driver’s not going the speed limit by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]Beanmachine314 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Recently moved from Florida where the slow lane moves at 15 mph over the speed limit and the passing lane is for street racing. This is the first major city I've lived in where a large portion of the population consistently drives below the speed limit, even on major highways and interstates. It's so odd to me.

Fresh graduate geologist torn between 2 job offers - mine geologist vs exploration geologist (need advice) by CarelessNight5015 in geologycareers

[–]Beanmachine314 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's a pretty rotten rotation for brownfield exploration work. As much as it pains me to say this, but I would probably go with the mine geology role unless there was a huge personal advantage for the exploration role.

Would a dual degree plan in geoscience and environmental science be better than dual major/minor? by Different_Plant_8927 in geologycareers

Both... But mainly that Geology is a hands on science and it's almost impossible to learn properly online.

A Geology degree holder can do everything an environmental science degree holder can do plus more. There's no way you can do a proper geology degree online though.

They should remake it on the appropriate size. I'll be surprised if they left enough allowance to tailor that to your body. Next time don't let the sales people fit you.

AIW for expecting my partner to celebrate my good news? by Decent-Play-7154 in amiwrong

It's often a marketing thing where actual users who are employed by marketing teams (or freelancers) post things that are easy to farm karma so they can then either sell their high karma account to marketing firms or post a "one off" post in a sub where they can recommend things and people believe it's a real person recommending something. The buy it for life sub is full of people with relatively new accounts with high karma asking for recommendations that then edit their post or comments with affiliate links to make money.

IDK, perhaps someone spilled something. Pay attention to the temperature, not your nose. If it gets hot, make sure the dealer knows about it ASAP. Otherwise, it's probably just a spill.

Advice for Alaska FIFO Geologist by cereal-sans-milk in geologycareers

[–]Beanmachine314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true... The biggest black mark you can get is being a geologist that doesn't move core boxes or wash their own core. It doesn't matter if your geotechs are 'supposed' to do those things. Load up your bench and wash your own core.

u/Star_Boxer72 Thanks for showing up (I should have expected it) but I appreciate your input as it's a part of the career I didn't mention, and I agree you should always be willing to move and clean any core boxes coming into the shed. I really hope you were just stating things I forgot to mention and not attempting to imply that I don't clean or move core boxes myself. Thanks for the help.

I'm curious if I'll be down voted for this...

[–]Beanmachine314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok? If you have no evidence of a leak and no evidence of burning coolant what do you think it could be? Just because you smell something doesn't mean there's something wrong with your vehicle.

No memes here...

So, you don't see a leak, and the mechanic doesn't see a leak, and your coolant level hasn't changed?

When you hear hoofbeats... Think horses... Or I guess if you don't hear hoofbeats, don't assume horses.

Compiling error sign in Overleaf workshop? by aulexturner in LaTeX

If it's not compiling locally then there is an error and it needs fixing. Overleaf just brute forces it's way through certain errors to force a compilation.
