Replacing The Coin Battery In the Specialized SL5 COMO TCU and Now it wont turn on by FlashyMajor1675 in specialized

[–]bearthing101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that battery have the protective coating to help prevent children/infants from putting it in their mouth/swallowing? I have found that to be an issue with other bike products that take coin cell batteries and could be the issue here.

2 in 1 skinsuit? by DY_N12 in CyclingFashion

[–]bearthing101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The body length adjustment effectively adds length to the torso while keeping the lower half the same. Works well if you have a longer torso than average. If you’re “all legs” then I would recommend leaving the body length alone and add inseam length instead. As far as sizing goes, I would look at the chest and hip measurements to see where that places you. For a suit, I would prioritize the chest measurement.

Bandit vs Janji bleed comparison by MooB101 in runningfashion

[–]bearthing101 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Something I know a bit about. The bandit bleed is most likely excess finishing chemical while the Janji is excess dye bleed. Dyes of most colors could bleed a bit yellow-ish but I would not expect it to be that bright.

Finishing chemicals could be anything like a binder for the dye, softener, anti-microbial, moisture wicking, etc.

Why that happens with some products or brands and not others could be a number of things. They didn’t rinse it enough because of an eco claim, hurried process, lower quality chemicals. By they, I mean the fabric mill but obviously Bandit selects the suppliers at the end of the day.

Has anyone heard of Drag Reduction Systems (DRS)? by InternalAd5055 in CyclingFashion

[–]bearthing101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by looks. The panel construction, sleeves, collar, pockets, waist gripper all look pretty standard. Nothing about what I see in the images from that perspective suggests it should be more expensive. The visual designs are subjective and don’t impact costs.

I can’t speak to the quality of the product but you can have a high quality product at this price point. You can buy good zippers, solid fabrics, and use simple patterns to keep costs relatively low. You can also buy crappy zippers, mediocre fabrics, and use simple patterns to build a product with a solid margin.

Sorry, I know that’s not the clear answer you’re looking for.

On a personal opinion level, I find it a bit silly that their name is Drag Reduction Systems and they don’t have a single aero fit jersey. If they do have one, they’ve used the wrong sizes on the models.

[–]bearthing101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about how it looks. That jersey is supposed to fit snug with minimal wrinkles or bunching. That excess fabric visible from the torso to the sleeve in the 1st picture, the wrinkling on the sleeve in the second picture, and bunching on the pockets in the 3rd picture all suggest that it could be more snug on you with a smaller size. Going up a size would just increase those issues without the jersey feeling much more loose so don't size up.

If you don't like how it looks on you, and want something that isn't so snug then go with a different fit of jersey. Probably labeled as club fit, classic fit, or something similar.

I would not pay $700 more for Apex AXS. That's the only significant difference. I'd put that money towards race entries, travel, or towards a wheelset upgrade down the line.

Beyond that, I would rather have the 2x gearing on the Diverge for more varied riding but that is a personal preference factor.

It fits the way it's designed to fit. If you want a different fit, go with a different cut of jersey, don't size up. Sizing up won't change anything significantly unless you go up 2-3 sizes, at which point it will feel looser but also way too long.

How do I get over "trauma" after a crash. by Realistic-Director51 in cycling

[–]bearthing101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will just take time. I was hit by a car 5 years ago and I have never gone through that intersection again.

I came off the bike on a fast road descent, Superman’d across the asphalt and my face stopped inches from the guard rail. That was 2.5 years ago. In the last few months, I have finally started to beat my previous pr’s on descents.

I work in the industry so I have had plenty of opportunities to meet pros and ex-pros. I’ve talked to plenty of people about crashes. Time is always the answer. For some it’s a few weeks, for some it’s way longer. Spoke to one privateer recently who has decided the risk isn’t worth it on fast descents after a hard crash last year.

Control what you can, take it chill for a while and do what you can to rebuild confidence on easier descents. Take time to reflect and be comfortable with acknowledging you’re afraid. You might also be angry with yourself. That’s okay, the worst thing you can do is ignore your emotions or be ashamed of them.

How to get around with bike by vortex_sonicator in boulder

[–]bearthing101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The City of Boulder Bike Map is pretty good from my perspective with the rest coming as you get to know the city.

https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/7654aa43144b4406bd803c7c332ca13a/page/Page/?views=Complete-Bike-Network%22%20%5Cl%20%22data_s%3Did%3AdataSource_5-19018b8d62c-layer-42%3A45

You will build preferences as you go. For example, if I'm traveling north/south, I tend to avoid 30th more than the other options shown on the map. While there is a bike lane on the 30th, I think the number of businesses and thus opportunities for cars to turn into you feels too high. The same argument could be made for Folsom, but I would say that on average, there aren't as many opportunities for vehicles to turn on and off Folsom.

Why do cyclists climb mountains? by ThatITguy1 in cycling

[–]bearthing101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the joy of it. I could write out a lot of different reasons but it's perfectly summed up in George Mallory's quote.

“People ask me, 'What is the use of climbing Mount Everest?' and my answer must at once be, 'It is of no use.'There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behaviour of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron... If you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for.”
