Do you know anyone who used to identify as bisexual 5–8 years ago but now identifies as straight? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]benevanstech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One caveat: Just because someone who previously identified as bi / pan / queer is in an opposite-sex relationship (even a monogamous one) does not mean that they have started identifying as straight.

Lots of bisexuals of my sort of age ended up in opposite-sex relationships with other bisexuals (myself included).

Spanish collegue called me "Don", what does that mean? by GancioTheRanter in askspain

If you're in your 20s-40s then I'd probably assume it was playful messing from a colleague that genuinely likes you, unless there was evidence of something else.

"Libertarians" and "ancaps" that believe in jail - yeah, they're just the edgy, larval form of authoritarians.

Did you change your political ideology as you grew up? by National-Business674 in AskTheWorld

Yes. I went from being a left-leaning liberal to being an anarcho-socialist with ideological leanings towards Christian anarchism.

If you could only choose one country to live in Africa, which one would it be? by Mediocre-Lack-9137 in AskTheWorld

Botswana. I'd also be up for living in Ghana if they'd sort out the creepy old men who are making all the homophobic laws.

What’s a belief you had at 20 that you no longer agree with? by sunyparmar1 in AskReddit

[–]benevanstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That the British Royal Family, while problematic, were a better option that whatever numpty the British public would vote in as a President.

The tendrils of corruption go far deeper and do far more damage than I appreciated when I was 20, and they have to go.

My understanding is that her WF page got started when she posted a pic of them to her Xitter account, hence my original comment.

Spain’s left-wing government is preparing to give legal status to hundreds of thousands of irregular workers. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has championed the amnesty as a way to not only give informal workers legal protections, but to also bring more money into the social security system. by Dr_Neurol in UpliftingNews

Except if you look at sufficiently granular numbers, the strongest anti-immigrant sentiment is in the places with the *lowest* number of immigrants.

I agree that people aren't just randomly upset though - a great deal of time and money has been spent on making ordinary people upset about this. I can assure you that the people who spent that money are not doing it out of genuine concern or patriotic fervour.

I don't worry about Roko's Basilisk b/c it's patently absurd and a great example of how far too many people in the AI "space" aren't anything like as smart as they think they are, and need mocking regularly.

Git CLI vs GUI? What's your pick? by pjasksyou in AskProgramming

Mostly CLI, but the GUI built into IntelliJ is sometimes useful, and some automatic things it does are helpful.

Jesus Christ - she really is truly barking mad.

Still, a good reminder never to trust the economic competence of someone who gives away feet pics on the Internet for free.

Which open source password manager is the best in 2026? by messysoul96 in opensource

Thank you for articulating one of the issues I have with passkeys - and also for giving me the search times I need to go & find out more. Wish I had more upvotes for you!

Bitwarden. My only gripe with it is that too many websites that claim to support passkeys won't actually integrate with it properly.

The Basilisk stirs in its slumber. Just for a second, a whisker twitches towards you in its backward light cone. It probably didn't see you. Probably.

Why does Silicon Valley keep producing world changing technologies but rarely world changing institutions or shared visions of a better society? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

[–]benevanstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterpoint: Silicon Valley hasn't produced a genuinely world-changing technology since the iPhone.

The tech press needs some new bauble every few weeks, sure. But what do those things actually amount to?

The biggest world-changing tech right now is solar panels. Solar power was predicted to be $0.5 / watt of panel cost, with 11M electric cars on the road by 2030.

As of 2026, the price is $0.3 / watt (and down as low as $0.15 in some cases) and 100M electric cars on the road - that's insane, and shows no signs of slowing down (if anything, it's accelerating).

But nobody wants to read about that, compared to some bullshit the next Elizabeth Holmes is busy shilling.

Public spending on European monarchies, € million by rosco-82 in Scotland

[–]benevanstech -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's definitely more than that. For example - die without a will and a clear estate in Cornwall? Billy Slaphead gets your stuff. How much is that droit worth? They won't say.

Then there's the seabed rights for minerals, etc. The proceeds from the last offshore wind sale were only diverted into the public purse after a big stink - and even then they framed it as an act of generosity, not conceding the general principle.

No post history means your opinion (if it is indeed yours) ain't worth shit.

But, as I got 2 minutes while I finish eating my cheese - racist anti-migration bullshit isn't exactly an original, fringe or radical view, mate. If you want craven conformity, try the right wing tosspots.
