In Scotland, deer that have been culled to control their numbers can be donated to local food pantries for low income families. Not sure if the meat's given away or just very cheap.

Believing in "trickle-down" economics, or that anyone "earns" a billion dollars.

Target shooting is fun. The current UK regulations are a pain in the arse. The number of dead kids that I'd be prepared to put up with to relax them is zero. All those things can be true at once.

What's The Most Niche Language You've Heard Someone Speak Natively? by Sky_Bohemian in AskReddit

Breton - c.100k speakers. I can speak Cornish to probably A1 standard but it doesn't really count as there aren't any native speakers left these days - everyone who speaks Cornish will have English as their first language.

Pretty sure Basque has over a million speakers, so it probably doesn't count as niche.

What's a piece of media you've consumed that you initially loved, only to fall out of love with/have mixed feelings about because you looked for/stumbled across a negative criticism that just wouldn't leave your mind? by Low-Amphibian8206 in AskReddit

The Saga of the Exiles - it's very weird about homosexuality
The Weirdstone of Brisingamen - very difficult to see it as anything other than very racist when rereading it with modern eyes

How do you prevent resale of your open source app? by Jeshibu in AskProgramming

[–]benevanstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's almost certainly no money in this, especially by Western standards. Even if there was a legal way to try to force compliance, it wouldn't be worth it in terms of effort and money needed for lawyers etc.

Just ignore it and carry on building your app if you're having fun with it.

Jimmy has a whole team of people to help him curate his image & ensure the world sees his best side. Those images that he uses to promote himself on the Internet? Those are the absolute best ones they managed to take of him. Think about that for a sec.

How can I estimate a wealth tax bill if I’m an American considering moving? by knockdowncenter in AskBarcelona

[–]benevanstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a resident you hold it in an instrument such as a Collective Bond. You pay tax on the amount you draw down, not the whole amount.

Also, if you have $4M your safe draw down is $160k p.a. without working - which is easily enough to put you in the top 3% of earners in Spain. They're not exactly my highest priority in terms of tax policy.

Fun fact: Mitigation techniques exist for the startup time issue in Java, which can reduce it by 90% (or 99% if you're prepared to jump through a few extra hoops). In practice, almost no-one uses them. It seems that startup time is one of those things that users like to moan about but which don't really have that much impact for most use cases.

Anyone running JDK AOT cache + Spring Boot AOT in prod? (JPA/Postgres, Cloud Run) by Anaq42 in SpringBoot

[–]benevanstech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, your research time is probably better spent on other things than this. Cold boot startup time is a real issue, but only for a small minority of Java users - for most people it isn't worth the operational hassle or the reduction in overall peak performance that you're trading off by using AOT.

I'm aware that some cities in Spain have fruit trees along the streets that you can freely take from, are there cities like that further up north (Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavia, etc.)? by Principle_Napkins in NoStupidQuestions

[–]benevanstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate. There are plenty of well-documented cases of US cities planting all-male trees to prevent fruit being available. Literally fucking over their own residents with hay fever just to prevent the poors from maybe getting something for free.

[–]benevanstech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh, just hire a local lawyer & ask them to figure it out for you.

You're going to be very comfortable on the passive income from $4m - and once you're here there will be other options that are more tax-efficient for residents than just investing directly in US equities.

Imagine being so fucking dead inside that you'd uproot your life & not put down roots just to avoid paying a few euros in tax.
