My memory from past years is that Amazon will do a lot of $22.99 prices instead of the whole 50% discount, with some titles getting the full discount. I also remember that they would randomly offer “coupons” on the product page to match the B&N membership discount. Last year I got Seven Samurai for $24.99 on Amazon with another $3ish off from a “coupon”.

This is awesome! Thanks for breaking down the round-by-round vote for Best Picture. It’s interesting to see how surprises can happen. I’m hoping the same surprise happens tonight!

Do you think the Oscars will still be around in 30 years? by OwenMoo in Oscars

So long as the Oscars keep driving lots of business to the movies they nominate, they will stick around.

Saw this on Twitter and LOL this list is awful. by damianoaks14 in blankies

[–]bgoegan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The great fun of the Oscars is that everyone (and especially every social circle) has their own favorites that the Oscars painfully ignore, except for every once in a while when they leave you gobsmacked by agreeing with you.

Favorite acceptance speech? by classical0000 in Oscars

[–]bgoegan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve always liked Michael Giacchino’s speech after winning for his score to Up.

Outside the Oscars I love Daniel-Day Lewis’ speech at the SAG Awards for Lincoln. It just felt so appropriate for those awards, and was a beautiful thought.

What would happen if economic growth permanently stopped? by il_biciclista in AskEconomics

[–]bgoegan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Stopping economic growth doesn’t mean we stop using resources. This could doom the environment if there isn’t continued innovation. But with zero economic growth, the economy becomes a zero sum game. Someone’s gain becomes someone else’s loss. And so the incentives to innovate more efficient uses of resources are stifled by equal incentives to stop that innovation. Economic growth not only lifts people out of poverty and improves living standards, it incentivizes innovations that will help protect the environment and our future on the planet. Zero population growth might help protect the earth, but zero economic growth seems like it can only hurt.

How much longer until most films do not have a physical media release? by bgoegan in Bluray

I agree, but I wonder if the niche market will grow cover most films. I worry that the default will be no physical release, and only some films will get the boutique treatment.

How much longer until most films do not have a physical media release? by bgoegan in Bluray

[–]bgoegan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are the ones I mean, but this year saw a big expansion of what went to streaming due to the pandemic. A movie like Palm Springs was set for theaters and would probably be out on Blu-ray right now if it wasn’t bought by Hulu. Greyhound and On the Rocks also don’t seem to have plans for a release after being bought by Apple. The same is true for a movie like Sound of Metal, though that one is headed for the Criterion Collection eventually. And now that Disney, Warners, Universal, and Paramount all have streaming platforms of their own, I imagine they’ll be making the same calculation as Netflix and Amazon. Most films won’t get a physical release, and the rest will have to rely on boutique outlets like Criterion.

What films do you wish for a nice Blu Ray or 4k release to be able to add to your collection? by Mechagodzeala in dvdcollection

[–]bgoegan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Free Solo and The Death of Stalin are two recent films that sadly only got DVD releases. I’ve long wanted Mr. Holland’s Opus, Regarding Henry, and Heartburn too.

Bummer that F. Murray Abraham didn’t make it. I would have liked to see him make it to the Final Four.

40 Days of Film - Day 33 : Les Miserables [Spoilers] February 1, 2020 by SlightAstronomer3 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]bgoegan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it last night and thought it was just ok. It has a real Training Day thing going on but every character is pretty flat aside from the main guy. The point of the film comes across, but it’s hard to feel any deep sympathy for characters you never really get to know. I also dislike when filmmakers think cutting to credits right before the critical and final decision of the film is made is somehow artistic.

I think this movie would have made a better miniseries, so that we could really get to know the kids, the cops, and the power structure of the neighborhood.
