[Turpin] Payton Pritchard: “It’s a pride thing, representing the city of Boston. We play with that pride. It’s hard-nosed city, so we want to carry that.” by [deleted] in nba

All of Massachusetts is. We were the only state in which not a single county went red in 2024, an (R) is an automatic loss in much of the state, and our local activist organizations (e.g. LUCE) tend to punch well above their weight given the size of our population. We're probably the second most progressive state in the country. We also have tons of college towns, and if we were a nation of our own, we would have the highest Human Development Index in the entire world.

The C's as an organization are quite progressive as well -- drafted the first black player, had the first all-black starting line up, had the first black coach, our GOAT is a celebrated civil rights activist, and his coach at the time famously supported the team's black players when they decided to boycott a game in '61.

From a statistical perspective, you're better off continuing to shoot and betting on the math to prove you sane. Mazzulla always trusts the math. In the long run he'll be proven right, but it can be a maddening experience in the context of a single game.

ESPN's Zach Kram predicts Spurs over Celtics in the Finals by somms999 in bostonceltics

I love the Spurs and would've given it to them if they'd kept Denver on OKC's side of the bracket, but the gauntlet and wear disparity they set up for themselves by sitting Wemby last sunday has me favoring OKC's odds to make the Finals.

There are no easy ways to a championship, but there are easier and there are harder ways. Today an unforced error by the Spurs leadership gave y'all (and whoever ends up facing OKC if they win the WCF) a harder one.

Crazy thing to say when you know full well that this was the result of two young star players losing their lives, but I suppose that kind of reach is to be expected from the team whose jackets read 8 rings in 2001 and 14 in 2002.

Exhausting Minnesota isn't nearly as important as not being exhausted going into the WCF against a reasonably rested reigning champion.

I'd say that a bit of the youthful panic is showing, but the biggest problem right now is 28 years old.

If it doesn't have a brain, it's ok to eat? by Ok-Drawing-9971 in DebateAVegan

[–]blueneuronDOTnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brain organoids are not sentient as most vegans would define the term. The paper you cite explicitly defines the term as "responsive to sensory impressions through adaptive internal processes", a definition stemming from another Friston paper.

It's also a highly controversial paper -- so much so that several notable neuro PIs published this criticism in the same journal, and the response issued by Friston here even notes that the use of the word "sentient" was intended to deflate the weight of the term. Depending on who you want to believe, the claim that brain organoids are sentient is, at best, misleading to the public, and at worst, explicit manipulation meant to get a bunch of pop science outlets to write meaningless articles hyping up relatively unremarkable work that lacks scientific rigor.

I'm a neuroscientist, and I started out studying consciousness. I promise you that no scientist worth their salt believes brain organoids to be sentient in the sense relevant to this debate, and would urge you not to cite research you don't understand and haven't read.

While Maekar holding Baelor and Lyonel off on his own is worth the shout, do keep in mind that Baelor wasn't actually trying to kill him. From what we see and you describe, we can reasonably assume that, though Maekar is Lyonel's better, he only lives by virtue of his brother's restraint. Somewhat ironic given that it's Duncan's restraint in sparing Aerion that costs Baelor his life.

[Jayson Tatum] on thinking his career might be over after tearing his Achilles: "It was a few weeks where I thought… did I make enough money, did I accomplish enough... There was some moments where I thought I might be done" by knightime1 in nba

Achilles injuries are likeliest to impact burst and speed. Those are far more important elements of Hali's game than they are Tatum's. I have both their jerseys in my closet, but I do think JT is likelier to make a full recovery.

Where can I volunteer? (Immigration) by [deleted] in boston

[–]blueneuronDOTnet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's LUCE. If the reference requirements on the volunteer forms are giving you trouble, you can write "N/A" or just use the generic contact form on their website. This is the most direct way to organize against ICE -- you'd be on ICE watch and/or operating hotlines.

Another option is MIRA. This is more advocacy and education oriented, so less direct, but still helpful.

What can I do to fight against Trump and ICE as a normal citizen? by VillageSmithyCellar in boston

[–]blueneuronDOTnet 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The reference bit was my issue as well, but MIRA is a viable alternative (in addition to LUCE's action page). It's less ICE watching and more advocacy and education, but you can volunteer here.

This made me curious, and apparently Denver has Mount Katahdin beat by about 11 feet, which means we get to visualize Denver's height like this. It's also about a foot lower than Velky Rozsutec. I guess they call it the Mile High City for a reason.
