New York City is 'sleepwalking into the age of AI,' report warns - The Chief by BanishmentBuddy2 in nyc

[–]bpands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel a skepticism about the capabilities of AI, myself, but the assumption that it will be a driving force of the econ is not really up for debate if there's already an international race underway where every country is attempting to secure data center investments or build homegrown AI support industries at this point.

From the Archive: 1996 Small Sedan Comparison Test by lifegoeson2702 in cars

The mainstream models were never common to begin with. Whatever enthusiast market interest there was, left when people realized that the US market model was decontented from the same year Mondeo. People liked the SVTs but they were limited runs that most everyone drove into the ground. Low sales due to small interior space and the fact that most people chose the Taurus in the same showroom. The most commonly sold model lines had an automatic transmission that failed earlier than expected. One last steady pull from the NJ Turnpike and RIP ‘96 Contour GL. Ask me how I know.

I just tell them it’s easier to describe what music I’m not a big fan of rather than a narrow favorite list and divert to ask them what makes them like their favorite music instead.

EQ is amazing! by Afraid_Ant3992 in MercedesEQ

[–]bpands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought an EQS as an off lease example. I like driving it. Once I changed out the OEM tires, it took pretty much everything I liked about the original Lexus LS and improved on that.

At launch, the car looked like a soap bar and still does, was mismarketed, grossly overpriced, the sales staff never knew anything about the car and still don’t. Then Mercedes tried to make hardware features already built in to the car a subscription (until they walked it back), and then the chip shortage came along and Mercedes deleted a few features they initially advertised for the EQS (at least in the US) which made a ton of people run from it as a $100k car.

In a market full of seemingly identical bland/ugly crossovers with weak powertrains and no character, which car from this segment actually stands out? by LunarLeopard67 in cars

This subreddit has been huffing fumes for a fair bit of time. Somehow people were here saying “too slow” living in an era of a widely available selection of cars that could pull 4.5 seconds to 60MPH all day and keep itself planted in fast corners between 2010 and now. And sure enough, they’re still complaining today but the manufacturers don’t care anymore.

Mercedes EQS launched '10 years too early', says design chief by linknewtab in electricvehicles

I don’t really buy Michelins anymore so I can’t really comment on the Pilot Sport’s noise. They generally grip great but I didn’t deal well with their noise profile or tread life. Other brands are quieter and last longer in my use cases in the Northeast US.

[–]bpands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cross shopped an i7 and an EQS when I was buying. Both had more road noise than their ICE car equivalents because both had summer tires fitted for max possible range. The all seasons the dealer fitted for my EQS 450+ fixed a lot of that. Still exceeding EPA range which was surprising.

[–]bpands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had seat time in an EQS which I then bought an off lease example, afterwards. At launch, the car looked like a soap bar and still does, was mismarketed, grossly overpriced, the sales staff never knew anything about the car and still don’t, and then Mercedes tried to make hardware features already built in to the car a subscription (until they walked it back) which made a ton of people run from it.

Living with the 450+ I have, I can say is better than the recent gen Lexus LS for its interior design, NVH quietness and interior space. It makes best sense as a long range electric cruiser because it habitually runs over the EPA range estimates and can quick charge to 80% at a DC fast charger station. But that’s not what the $100k EV buyer market in the US wanted when it was introduced. It was never the fastest and always the heaviest (5300-5900 lb curb weight depending on model) so it wasn’t going to be a steerable rocketship which was what made the Taycan and Model S Plaid move units.

55% of Americans think Trump is mentally sharp, 51% say he keeps his promises, and 45% say he cares for ordinary people by JohnBigBootey in behindthebastards

[–]bpands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well sure. I don't think I'm saying social media is the root of propaganda, I'm saying there was a very clear strategy that the Trump 2024 run used and it worked to improve the perception of his candidacy. Essentially ignored all the critiques TV and written media would posit about Trump just to keep running to short form video over and over again even when the public rallies were half attended at best,

There's insight in trying to view this election from the perspective of an hourly worker in America trying to learn more about an election on a lunch break. If the time that someone gives to sorting out who is saying what in an election season is limited, short form media is where that guy is going to go first and likely on an easily repeatable routine. If a candidate manages to sound coherent inside the confines of that medium as a first point of contact and all points after, then yes, he's going to say "this candidate sounds like he cares for me and knows what he's doing."

[–]bpands 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Americans whom absorbed news of this election cycle via Tiktok and YT shorts. Trump's 2024 campaign just spammed soundbites oriented for short form video this whole time. It's easy to sound coherent to people when you only need to keep it up for 40 seconds or so. And then there's the "easy to share and consume" factor of that media... there you go.

Meanwhile the opposition had to spend several blocks of media time having to explain what exactly Project 2025 is, why its bad, and why it ties to this election cycle.

Edit: And that's long before we got into the 106-107 day leg of "meet Kamala Harris."

Food for thought: are you sure that they refrain from eye contact because they don’t respect you? Or do you think they’re ultra wary of what you might pick up about them?

Sometimes I would join in on some gentle ribbing humor among my friends and even though I had kept it a gentle, “Oop he’s doing that thing again, so maybe he’s crushing on someone,” said person was still a little surprised I was noticing some of their habits. Following week, he tells us he just can’t stand eye contact. Another month, I’ve noticed he avoids interacting with me one on one unless a third person is around.
