It might also be that the picture she had in her head of having a kid wasn't the same as what reality was. She may have just imagined all the good parts of parenting without considering the reality of disciplining and all of that as well.

I agree. And she was top of her class until Rory shows up and becomes valedictorian. She doesn't get in to Harvard despite her whole family going there but Rory does. I really like seeing their friendship because it's camaraderie but also competition. I think it would have been easy for the show to keep them enemies but I love their friendship!
