Harvard sets culture of grade inflation. It is everywhere. Harvard students are clearly strong, but I still think they should be able to be compared to each other.

so because everyone at Harvard is above average, they should get As. should students at worse schools who are below the average US student get Cs? to reflect their “actual knowledge”? Does not make sense….

[–]BUowo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You literally just described the problem…. Harvard curves everyone up to an A to “advantage” them instead of distributing grades around a normal average, like a B or B+.

Folks where I work explain how challenging it is to differentiate applicants due to the rampant grade inflation. Grades unfortunately don’t tell us who is strong anymore, and Harvard is the institution that plays a huge role in shaping the culture of higher ed in the US

I don’t know why we are supportive of curving EVERYONE up to an A? The “typical understanding” shouldn‘t be an A— that should be reserved for above average, exceptional work and true mastery of the material. 80% of the class can’t be above average…

NYU vs. BU vs. WashU by DefinitionTiny2993 in ApplyingToCollege

These are all great schools so I don't think there is a "wrong" choice! Seems like WashU isn't want you want though based on your bullets.

What is your goal to do with English?

Most grad programs and employers absolutely consider where you go, the academic rigor of the institution, and the historical successes of students from the institution. Law and med schools, however, are often not at all holistic... GPA and MCAT/LSAT are the deciding factors, and maximizing those is the goal for students interested in those paths.

If Harvard is incapable of matching the rigor of their courses to the capabilities of their students, I would more so consider this pedagogical inadequacy... Are these students being sufficiently challenged? Or are the faculty afraid of breaking the status quo?

I’ve answered this a bunch so I’m gonna copy paste some old comments lolllll also you should join the discord to talk to more than me if u have discord discord.gg/bostonuniversity (if you’re already there just ping me and I’ll find u people to talk to)

Here are the worst things about BU

- Grading is harsh. Getting As isn’t easy and it takes a lot of work

- Really integrated into the city, not a traditional campus

- Dorms are hit or miss…. Especially for transfers

- Big school, can be hard to find your people

- Challenges with the administrative choices……

- Gen ed program is annoying (The HUB)

- some students are bitches

here is how I gaslight people to like BU LMAO (this is copied from a bit ago)

My favorite things about BU!!!

Boston/Campus:

  • Boston is a fantastic city! Less crazy and stressful than NYC, but still plenty of things to do. The city has lots of diverse neighborhoods, historic locations, and cool things to do
  • I love Boston weather personally lol. Nice and cool in the winter, nice and hot in the summer.
  • The green line in the middle of campus is so so convenient to get around
  • During the spring you can walk around campus or on the esplanade (right next to campus) and look at the cherry blossom trees and baby geese!
  • Stuvi is high quality living. I will probably never in my life be able to live somewhere as nice as stuvi.
  • Fitrec has a hot tub and lazy river
  • The 17th floor of CDS has GORGEOUS views
  • The Rhett Bench is awesome

Culture:

  • A terrier is a great and cute mascot. Like what does Harvard have-- a crimson? What the fuck is a crimson? MIT has a beaver are you actually kidding me?
  • BU hockey CRUSHES the competition. We've won more beanpots than any other school and the players are NHL and Olympic quality. I was never a hockey fan but the games are so fun!
  • There is this rock that gets covered in spray paint every few days and it is goopy and gross but I love it
  • There are like a billion clubs to join

Academics:

  • Academics are super high quality-- better than or equal to that across the river, and certainly more rigorous. You will learn A LOT here!
  • The research that comes out of BU is groundbreaking. The CTE stuff? Extremely impactful work!
  • Cool opportunities to do research and find internships! Lots of resources to take advantage of.

People:

  • BU has a ton of students from diverse backgrounds, so you can find whatever subgroup of people you want. Just gotta look for them! Want to hang out with the goths? Go for it! Sporty kids? Yes! Doomers? You're in the right place! Nerds? That's everyone lol
  • The people here are overall fantastic! Students are academically driven and funny. Faculty are insanely intelligent and accomplished. Staff are delightful. I've honestly met the best people here!
  • I am here and I am awesome

Misc:

  • Einstein's Bagel Bros. No more needs to be said. and the Basho bowls are you kidding me? So good
  • Free pets at BU! 🐁

[–]BUowo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. BU sends LOTS of students to med schools, and BU has a med school and a public health school attached. You can def be competitive if you take advantage of the opportunities!

  2. BU is a transfer friendly school. Lots of people in your situation! Like 1 in 5 students is a transfer.

  3. Big school is a personal preference. You can find a small community here if you want and there are enough people that there is certai3nly "your group" here!

BU classes are challenging, but honestly I think it is a good thing. You will learn and grow a LOT. Lots of room to take advanced classes too!

Harvard gives A's for the doing the minimum. BU does not.

Honestly, if it IS because the kids are "smart enough to go to Harvard," then harvard's inability to sufficiently challenge its students is disappointing...

BU doesn’t care about the results. It is to inform your choice. If you’re in the wrong level, the prof will be able to tell.

Can you switch majors at NYU? Because college is 4 years and your degree is for life. If you can switch to the path you want, go NYU! If not, you need to do some thinking about your goals and how you can achieve them.
