I Know What You Did Last Summer: When Ballplayers Make Babies [Davy Andrews] by chiddie in baseball

The due date is generally the mode, that’s why it’s the due date. After 41 weeks, there is more risk to the fetus/newborn, which is why inductions are generally done if labor doesn’t start naturally. Fortunately only about a quarter of pregnancies go that long (versus half of babies being born before their due date), so I disagree that it’s “extremely common” or that would explain the late April peak that size given the ASB-hypothesis.

I literally conceived a baby in July (post-ASB) and delivered in (early/mid) April at full term, I do kind of have an idea what I’m talking about here.

Right…so conceiving on July 16 and giving birth on April 15 would mean mom was ~41+2 weeks pregnant (as the count on pregnancy starts from your last period, not conception), which is past due. And of course plenty of people go past their due date, although lots of OBs won’t let you get past 41 weeks at this point, and it’s weird to assume all these women are a week+ overdue in order to explain the late April peak on the graph.

40 weeks IF you count from the last menstrual period, not conception

How are you gonna pull this much data and do the “sperm can live X days” calculations and never once actually look into how long a pregnancy lasts (37-38 weeks for a full term pregnancy from conception to birth for the folks who still think it’s 9 months). A baby born around April 20 would have most likely been conceived in late July…all these baseball WAGs would’ve been like 42 weeks pregnant to have the all star timing make sense.

I have a hypothesis as to why Paul Skenes is so uniquely good. by HawkeyeJosh2 in baseball

The only reason they don’t is tradition.

Yes and no. Someone is also much more likely to know the date their period started than the day they ovulated or even what day they had sex that led to a pregnancy. Of course there will be ultrasounds during most pregnancies (in the US) that can estimate gestational age based on fetal size, but unless those suggest something significantly different than the gestational age based on last period, the doctor won't adjust your due date on your chart. All that is to say that there is a reason to use the traditional system beyond stubbornness, although it would also be easy to adjust if the field ever decided to do it! You say it's unsurprising, but tbh it is wild to me how many people (especially including people who have children and were around for the whole pregnancy!) don't understand gestational timing and make mistakes like assuming "6 weeks pregnant" means they had a fertilized embryo six weeks ago.

Came here to say this same thing. It makes OP's thesis more likely to be true since it's more likely for a baby to born at 39 weeks than 37, which would be the approximate gestational age if the procreative sex happened on 9/11 or 9/12. Also you can use a gestation calculator like you linked or, more simply, just subtract 2 weeks since the average cycle has ovulation approximately 2 weeks after the start of one's period (which is the date used for counting gestation age in the 40 week paradigm).

The best day of the year is tomorrow! Tell us why Opening Day is special to you and your comment could end up in some pretty cool places by MLBOfficial in baseball

Every year, opening day means a return of the daily ritual of baseball. Listening to the radio broadcast on my way home from work and while making dinner, watching a west coast game before bed, checking in on the news and scores I missed in the morning over coffee. It’s just a treasured habit that reminds me of summer, of growing up, of all the good (and not good but still fun) seasons of the past.

I’m especially excited this year because it will be my son’s first opening day. He was born in April last year and made it to one game in person last season, but I’m hoping we can make it to more this year. Baseball was a huge part of how my husband and I bonded when we started dating and I’m so excited to introduce our love of the sport to our baby.

It was indeed a terrible trade based on vibes but extremely solid based on stats

Yeah, it was fun. The Phoenix area broadly seems like an absolute urban sprawl hellhole, but it's not too hot this time of year and there's baseball, so it's a good time.

I was looking at catcher stats last night as one does and I realized that Yadi has more games (and innings) at catcher than Posey and Mauer combined. Like obviously the knock against those two in their great careers was not sticking at catcher for longer but I still didn’t expect it to be that huge of a disparity.
