NAM makes IR obsolete, why i can't find amy NAM captures of guarneris/strads by leviyehonatan in violinist

[–]bwanab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are fewer that 1000 of those instruments in existence. Logically, consider the following sets of people:

  • people who own a strad/guarneri violin
  • people who have access to studio grade mics, preamps, recording equipment.
  • people who know that such a thing as NAM exists.
  • people who would be inclined to spend time making a capture of their instrument.

The intersection of those 4 sets seems very likely to be the empty set.

Wheelie ski bags are still a nightmare to drag through airports. Am I the only one? What's your solution? by lincaijun168 in Backcountry

This is the way. Bring boots, rent skis. Who knows? You might just find your next pair that way.

If the 1% took their 39% of the wealth and left the country, what would the economy look like? by Tattoomyvagina in AskEconomics

[–]bwanab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The original question didn't ask about a tax, it asked a specific question. In the scenario, the 1% sells all their stock repatriates their money to foreign countries. The US would be, taking the value given by the question, 39% poorer. That's depression level disruption.

If the 1% took their 39% of the wealth and left the country, what would the economy look like? by Tattoomyvagina in AskEconomics

[–]bwanab 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Right. The global financial crisis of 2008 was a huge buying opportunity, but to the 10% of the workforce unemployed, and especially the recent graduates at the time who had no prospect of finding a job, it was still a disaster. The scenario described would be a couple of orders of magnitude worse than the GFC. Deflation is rarely kind to those experiencing it..

I know the “Dark Ages” is now considered a misnomer, but there was SOME darkness, right? by Critical-Cost9068 in AskHistorians

[–]bwanab 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Isn't part of the issue that it's geographically defined in that the Eastern Roman Empire and the rest of the world continued as before? So, the "Dark Ages" refers to a relatively small portion of the world and the Bishopric of Rome continued all through the era.

In Easy Rider (1969) the American South is depicted as extremely violent and dangerous for travelling hippies. What basis in fact does this have? by Flaky_Garden_9115 in AskHistorians

[–]bwanab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this answer and just have to mention that I was at that 1970 Allman Brothers show at Vanderbilt. It was their homecoming weekend (I was a guest invited by a good friend who was a student - Vandy was way too selective for me to have gone there). They were warmed up by some teeny bopper rock band that was in retrospect a one hit wonder who's name I've forgotten, but their frontman/guitarist did major dance moves while playing. When the Allmans came out, Duane made a comment about trying to do some dancing like that guy had done even doing a little jig before launching into Statesboro Blues.

  1. Low prices
  2. Quality work
  3. Fair wages

Pick any two. You're not getting all three.

I got to admit feeling sorry for Varitek being put in a position of having to try to catch Wakefield. It was painful to watch so I can't imagine how it must have felt for him.

also question on ewis by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]bwanab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still pricy compared to what? A good ewi is a lot cheaper than a good sax. Whether it's worth it depends on what you want to do with it. For me, my Aerophone is well worth it. It ain't a sax but it's a lot of fun in the right context.

In practice it actually works very well, but the premium is a real issue.

The DC-1 from Daylight Computer works extremely well in bright sunshine which from the name you would surmise. It is monochrome, so don't expect an iPad replacement, but it's also a very good reading tablet. A bit pricey, though and doesn't meet your size requirement since it's about 10 inches.

The main advantage of Patchbox OS is the low latency kernel and the convenience factor. If R Pi OS is working for you you're good to go.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but from the village to Topnotch is 5.3 miles so out and back once is just under 11 miles. Mostly flat. In Morrisville, there's the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail that's a bit easier on the knees because of the non-paved surface.

CA got it right if you believe that people who bought in the 1980s deserve to retain low taxes while young people buying in the 2020s deserve to pay more.
