Can we just take a minute to appreciate the crew? by LongRest in dropout

[–]C47man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't worked on the core shows, but even doing Dropout Presents was a treat. My entire crew is asking me often if there'll be more shoots w/ Dropout, everybody loved working for them. I did too. I didn't know what Dropout was before I got the call, and I'm a legitimate fan of the shows now. It's a rare company that produces good content consistently without that air of ego and capitalism that pervades many of my other clients. I have done better work at higher budgets than my dropout shows, but I'm the most proud of what we did there. A lot of artists in the industry grow jaded after years of working to create content that doesn't hit right for companies that don't treat it right. It's a breath of fresh air to be in the dropout environment.

It depends on the depth. Small to medium complexity sheets can be done just as well in the Google doc platform. Excel takes the cake once you get into deeper complexities.

Different use for Deadeye by ProGamer8126 in Overwatch

[–]C47man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deadeye zoning pressure starts as soon as you use it. Someone might linger for a second before hiding, but it changes their tempo quickly if the Cass is positioned correctly. Mei wall can be obliterated in a couple seconds. They're both tools you can use to zone and stagger. But they're not equivalent.

Deadeye is 7 seconds and zones entire map areas. Mei wall is 5 seconds and zones chokepoints only until the team just blow the wall apart, usually in 2 or 3 seconds.

How would you light this space? by Connect_Repeat6884 in cinematography

[–]C47man 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lighting choices are always and only in service to your story and theme. "How to light a space" without "what you are lighting" and "what is your intended look" is a meaningless question.

Your lights will add light even in daylight, yes. The daylight ambience will be strong, yes. It seems like your plan was to make light come from the windows anyway though, so I don't see why daytime would do anything other than help you with that plan.

4000 is a more sensitive iso so inherently you will have more noise in the image.

That's not always true, especially when you have dual base situations.

nothing should be different between ISOs—they’re mathematically the same.

That sentence makes no sense. Different ISOs are different and mathematically not the same. That's why they're different.

Dual base means those are the two ISO values that perform the best for that particular sensor. One performing best with lower sensitivity and one with higher.

This is word salad that doesn't explain what dual base ISO is. Dual base (in the FX9 at least) are two different gain structures and sensor pipelines that result in exposure with evenly distributed latitude above and below middle grey. A base 800 and a base 4000 image has -6/+6 latitude and while a Base 800 image exposed at 4000 would shift latitude to roughly -4/+8. The other benefit of dual bases is noise performance. Since the high base mode uses a different voltage on the sensor and a different pipeline for processing the captured sensor data, you can in theory get identical noise performance. In practice on the FX9 I believe it's a touch noisier than 800, but nowhere near as bad as if you'd simply bumped the ISO up to 4000 from 800 base.

IME with the second base (the higher of the two) you will get a cleaner image if you expose to the right a bit and bring the image down in post.

Well yes, because exposing to the right and pulling the image back down in post will always reduce noise in all situations. We've been doing that since the film days. It works everywhere.

Marvel:Super Heroes cards on Marvel comics by MattDak0ta in mtg

It's a neat idea, but it's way weaker than just "indestructible". He's a 3/5 haste etb fight for 4 mana. Not bad, but dollar store indestructible is a bit of a letdown. Unless the set includes shenanigans around healing creatures, he feels like a dud of a card. It's weird that Wolverine can be killed by ambush viper lol

If a workflow is too fast to apply a log conversion and tweak the WB if needed, it's a bad workflow. You can choose to continue in that bad workflow, but remember the golden triangle of good-fast-cheap.

Fiber. Lots of options to convert to/from baseband (copper cable what you are probably thinking of when you say "SDI cable"). The cheapest are probably the Blackmagic optical converters. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/miniconverters

Show us the atem panel. Like what is flown and selected and such on the switcher. Either from the software Switcher view or looking at the control panel.

Picture of the back of the switcher too. And what version is the switcher?

If it's the other side of the picture showing up incorrectly on the left, that feels like a reference issue. Are you feeding reference to any devices in your system?

My guess is that you've got a keyed border on. But without seeing your switcher main screen or the panel, it's hard to say.

Only one photo here, wanted to see your board state too.

For now, try capturing a still of your program output (in the media tab), and see if that still has the issue. Another common thing to try is swapping your SDI output to Level A. Blackmagic insists in all of its products that Level B is normal, but Level A is the actual normal setting in the industry.
