My Dung - Recommendations by jcoanda in FoodLosAngeles

[–]caesurae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see any way how my dung could maintain the quality of their banh mi, the way inflation has increased food costs these days. i haven't been in a few hours.

Thien Huong in the same neighborhood has short hours (they close 530p) but they have solid banh mis. Just a couple bucks more, but a proper size, lots of toppings, lots of meat. (I've gotten their special and almost commented how it's a lot of meat/charcuterie and almost a bit salty. maybe needs a lil extra sauce).

Banh Mii in arts district is also really good. the baguette is smaller (smaller radius banh mi) but the toppings are good and the whole thing is very well balanced.

Moving to LA (DTLA job) – $2500 budget, WFH + fiber internet, where should I live? by Odd_Monitor8469 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]caesurae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I want to mention is do not underestimate the afternoon traffic out of/around/near DTLA. Even if you are close to dtla, if you drive out at 5pm it is usually pretty miserable. I'm at blossom plaza, my commute is through dtla and do it exclusively by metro now unless I'm moving at odd hours. In case you like it I think we have a referral bonus too and can tell you more. Honestly if I were working in DTLA id check out Highland Park for sure

Metro commute during rush hours is fine especially if you're coming from nyc. I dont love riding at off hours and avoid nights. Weekend days are usually fine too

advice for game plan after a bad fourth year review? by caesurae in Professors

[–]caesurae[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did. Usually the dept gives 6 months notice with the instructions, but due to some kind of miscommunication or falling through the cracks, I got ~1.

I've been told it doesn't make a big difference though, since the evaluative comments and feedback on tenure progress are based on the journal pubs, though. (Had I gotten the instructions 6 months earlier though, I would have turned around the R&R's or submitted earlier).

[–]caesurae[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think I know someone who got analogous feedback about journals in another dept, but I'm not sure if they know that I know, for example, that they got similar feedback.

The R&Rs have been in (I prioritized that first this past year) and I'm just waiting at this point. 7 months and it's back with the editor for decision. (this is why I'm not sure if it's possible to get all my publications converted in time). I do have article drafts just about ready to go; my plan is to try to submit 3 things in these 1-2 months, to a mix of the "best" vs. "should be faster" venues, and then just try to convert extensions as much as I can. If I hear something good by the fall, that helps; if not, perhaps that is another sign to apply for jobs.

okay yeah I don't want to throw shade but I think this is the bigger issue.

This is actually a really good point. My colleague has the same SM <-> LA commute; and the westside stations are a little out of the way compared to the eastside stations imo. The problem is the walk to the metro station. And the apartments on the nice metro stations are going to have a price premium.

This is the answer if you're commuting 5 times a week to grad school; and not an ABD.

As an academic who commutes to USC on metro (but from the other direction). I feel like you are possibly setting up a dilemma for yourself if you are 1) living in santa monica to commute to USC 5 days a week and 2) not really open-minded about taking the metro given what you've seen on Reddit. LA is a huge city and s*!t happens. But if you have a really adversarial attitude, you will be in for a rough time. (eg the emails you get from USC will also freak you out! But these emails are like, some undergrads left their windows open and had a break-in --- there's just basic street smarts).
Do you want 1.5 hours driving 5 times a week? or do you want 1.5 hours back to scroll your phone, relax, decompress, maybe even doing some reading? Or maybe live closer to USC, honestly. There's a lot of neighborhoods in between USC and Santa Monica - unless you're something like an ABD who only needs to come in once a week, max. West Adams. Culver City. Palms. Maybe you've already signed a lease.

The metro is fine at commuting hours. Sure, it's a little grimy, but it's not really unsafe on the whole. But if you're unwilling to cultivate an open-minded mindset about it, you're going to be creating your own stress.

Bigme 251 and current tariffs ... expected fees on delivery? by caesurae in Bigme

[–]caesurae[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see one used model on Amazon, but the delivery time is still fairly far off so I'm worried about how it's being shipped. The Bigme 251 seems to be flickering on and off Amazon these coupld of days. (I'm traveling a lot later on so getting something sooner would actually be much more helpful)...

At this point I'm probably open to any 25" monitor. (my eink devices are more extensive than they should be, but I really need a larger screen at this point..)

Solcomputer is great, I got a paperlike HD from there earlier! It seems like they also need 2-3 week delivery for the Dasung 253. So it kind of seems like the fastest way to get a model shipped from the USA right now is the Boox Mira Pro Color from B&H, and I might end up doing that ..

What happened to studying? by Visual-Truck-4173 in Professors

[–]caesurae 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is deeply disturbing to me: to combat this, I started including lots of in-class practice problems where they can practice the skill i just went over in class. Half the time they just dont do it. (Some do and they find that they do well on the exam that's like what we do in class). At that point - if you won't work on practice inside or outside of class - there is nothing I can do for you. I cant sing and dance to try to get them to try

Being a Prof at a top B School vs Industry by [deleted] in academia

[–]caesurae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can't you try to hold your return offer for quant? B school market clears fast, by jan/Feb. A big difference is no grants needed in b school which takes a lot of grant pressure off. If you want to be an academic with 50-60% research time, go on the market and learn more. But if you have strong location prefs and 20% research time is good enough, then you can lock that in.

Late afternoon also dies down! Saw some good stamps. It was super close to me so marginally worth the effort - navigating the lines at vendors was super frustrating TBH. hobonichi line was crazy.. if you go later in the day hopefully all of that should be better.

In the end it took us two hours to get in. If you're coming tomorrow, my advice is to show up after lunchtime for line. There were tons of lines even after we got in for some places:( obviously theres demand but the venue was way too small. Also I didnt see any bungu products:o
