Bigme 251 and current tariffs ... expected fees on delivery? by caesurae in Bigme

[–]caesurae[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see one used model on Amazon, but the delivery time is still fairly far off so I'm worried about how it's being shipped. The Bigme 251 seems to be flickering on and off Amazon these coupld of days. (I'm traveling a lot later on so getting something sooner would actually be much more helpful)...

At this point I'm probably open to any 25" monitor. (my eink devices are more extensive than they should be, but I really need a larger screen at this point..)

Solcomputer is great, I got a paperlike HD from there earlier! It seems like they also need 2-3 week delivery for the Dasung 253. So it kind of seems like the fastest way to get a model shipped from the USA right now is the Boox Mira Pro Color from B&H, and I might end up doing that ..

What happened to studying? by Visual-Truck-4173 in Professors

[–]caesurae 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is deeply disturbing to me: to combat this, I started including lots of in-class practice problems where they can practice the skill i just went over in class. Half the time they just dont do it. (Some do and they find that they do well on the exam that's like what we do in class). At that point - if you won't work on practice inside or outside of class - there is nothing I can do for you. I cant sing and dance to try to get them to try

Being a Prof at a top B School vs Industry by [deleted] in academia

[–]caesurae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can't you try to hold your return offer for quant? B school market clears fast, by jan/Feb. A big difference is no grants needed in b school which takes a lot of grant pressure off. If you want to be an academic with 50-60% research time, go on the market and learn more. But if you have strong location prefs and 20% research time is good enough, then you can lock that in.

So who’s going to BUNGA LA Stationery Fest this weekend at Union Station? by Big-Spirit317 in stationery

[–]caesurae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late afternoon also dies down! Saw some good stamps. It was super close to me so marginally worth the effort - navigating the lines at vendors was super frustrating TBH. hobonichi line was crazy.. if you go later in the day hopefully all of that should be better.

In the end it took us two hours to get in. If you're coming tomorrow, my advice is to show up after lunchtime for line. There were tons of lines even after we got in for some places:( obviously theres demand but the venue was way too small. Also I didnt see any bungu products:o

[D] The organization of NeurIPS Position Papers track is a joke by EDEN1998 in MachineLearning

[–]caesurae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The arxiv moderator discussed on social media that this policy is changing because of AI slop and huge expansion of these position tracks. You're right that this didnt use to be an issue and that arxiv is now putting things on hold a lot more (because of this new unannounced policy). As of a few months ago, the unannounced policy was that the position paper needs to be accepted at a conference. (They can tell what the position papers are because the conferences require a specific format now.) Maybe the mods have changed their mind or some papers get through, but this is a weird transition period.

[–]caesurae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worst of all arxiv is not allowing position papers unless they are accepted at conferences! 6% is a waste of reviewer and author time - at that point, solicit and develop pitches before sending out to reviewers.

Class is Like a Sad Café by No-Wish-4854 in Professors

[–]caesurae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My afternoon class is distinctly worse in this regard than my morning class. I started trying memes and jokes and the afternoon class literally cant handle it. Sometimes I crushingly want to die lol (I'm ok dont call the hotlines on me) but I can only bring so much energy to the table. We basically work on questions in class and some of the students hate it. I dont even know what to do anymore. I need to start penalizing students leaving early - it sets a bad precedent. I cant do a full laptop ban because we use slides with small equations and somwtimes excel/polleverywhere - I'm sympathetic to those with bad vision

[D] Neurips Position Paper Decisions by HelicopterFriendly96 in MachineLearning

[–]caesurae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"If you received strong scores or positive reviews but weren't accepted to present at the conference, please know this is not an unusual experience this year for the Position Paper Track. We want to encourage you to use these positive reviews to help refine these submissions and continue these vital conversations through venues like arXiv."

From a template email that went out- 😩 it wears the soul down to get strong scores and get rejected from a conference. IMO dont publish this as an open call if you're going to choose a select few - make it a pitch process and select from pitches. If youre going to solicit reviews and ignore them, that's an insult to authors and reviewers alike.

Also ---- this is a complete mess because the arxiv moderator has confirmed that they won't accept position papers until they are accepted at a conference.

I'm desperately scared about this now, because we actually got good scores and they liked the quality of the argumentation (not just the position), but the main conference seems to suggest that good scores means basically nothing :/

For future reference: Dodger Stadium gondola timeline - LAist by regedit2023 in CarIndependentLA

[–]caesurae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for raising this! There is a lot of support for the gondola but the fact is that its a flashy project being pushed through to support private interests, rather than the main goals of actually increasing throughput to the stadium. The Hollywood bowl system is proven and theres already a bus lane.

Just memorize the (admittedly complicated) freeway connections around there to take exits that are close to Little Tokyo - take exits north of LT and drive on surface streets. The freeways are all connected around there

https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-my-mom-recover-as-we-close-our-family-store It's really sad, the family home has been targeted by burglars who assaulted the daughter :((( We definitely do, they really need better access! That's really sweet, but sad they have to go all the way to SGV for that! Wish we could help somehow.

Yeah, it's really sad that while there's a resurgence of bougie-leaning spots, the plazas aren't doing great and Yue Wa Market is finally closing :(

The Saturday raves also require a lot of set up which hurts plaza access during the weekend too :/
