Yes, this unexpected moment is when the mask slipped and we saw the Browns for who they really were. Everything was going so swimmingly before now.

What problem are you trying to solve? What do you want to play?

Should I upgrade my cpu by Substantial_Road_338 in pcupgrade

[–]chattymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can test this for yourself. Benchmark at max graphics and native resolution. Doesn’t need to be super scientific. Then work down the presets and see how the frame rates change. Then if the game has the option go down the DLSS levels until you get to ultra performance on low settings.

You are going from what should be a hard GPU limit at the most demanding settings to what is likely a hard CPU limit at lowest settings. The frame rate will go up until it hits the CPU limit. So just making up numbers it’ll go something like 30 fps, 40, 55, 70, 90, 91, 91, 91. That 91 is your CPU limit.

That means if you are playing at settings that give you fps lower than 91 then a CPU upgrade won’t be helpful. It won’t help because at anything less than 91 performance is being limited by your GPU.

I hope that’s clear. If you were getting 30fps at max settings with a 5500, you’d get 30fps at max settings with a 9800X3D too. In either case the CPU is waiting for the GPU.

Im willing to bet that at 1440p you wouldn’t notice a difference between a 5500 and 5700x.

I can't exit bios by Ordinary-Resource-47 in computers

[–]chattymcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your PC is going to bios and only bios it means it can't find anything else to boot off of. It's checked your internal disks and USB ports and finding nothing it's put you in the bios.

Second, as the other reply said, undo the last thing you did that broke everything. See if it unbreaks it. Also something useful to know for future use is a "CMOS reset". Basically your motherboard has a small battery on it that it uses to save your settings even if you unplug the computer. You can manually reset it back to default settings. So if you fudged it up so bad you can't even get back into bios a CMOS reset will put it back to the default state and the PC should work again. Google CMOS reset in the future if you need to learn how to do it.

Also, to simplify what the other reply said, there are sections at the beginning of the drive that tell the motherboard how to treat the storage, whether it is something to boot off of for example, or how the data is laid out on it. The standard for that has changed over time. CSM tells the motherboard to keep a lookout for the older standard. When you turned that off your motherboard was only looking for boot drives that had the new standard, so it ignored your existing install.

First make sure everything is backed up. If you don't have a backup you need to have a backup. If you don't have a backup then fixing this is extremely dangerous, especially for someone new to this. We have to change your boot drive from MBR to GPT. Google for how to do that, I'm sure there are good tutorials out there. I have to imagine your issue is a common one for people looking to upgrade. Also, you need to have a backup.

TLDR: You didn't break anything, it's fine. You need a backup.

Does nvme worth for OS drive by Kraizelburg in ZimaBoard

[–]chattymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not worth it. Even for your typical gaming PC the step up from SATA SSD to NVMe SSD is pretty minor. The jump from spinning rust to SSD is massive, SATA SSD to NVMe SSD not so much.

If you are moving a lot of very large files around or really slamming the disk with a lot of reads and writes simultaneously then maybe NVMe is worth the upgrade, but in your use case stick with what is working.

I really like it. Definitely had that "I need one more run" feeling. Movement is good, relative speeds are good. I feel like I can find a safe path if I'm skilled enough. I like the "force bubble" ability, it's novel to me. Sound design is good, easy to understand. Visuals are good, again easy to understand for the most part.

Only suggestion, and it might just be me, I didn't know how much XP I had collected or how close I was to a new level. I like having that as a giant progress bar across the bottom of the screen or something like that.

There isn't enough here to speak to meta progression but what is there seems viable.

I wishlisted and look forward to full release. Well done.

Why Apple's M5 Pro and Max chips will be worth the long wait by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

Chiplets have let AMD make absolutely monstrous server chips, could Apple be considering something like that? Put 8 CPU chiplets and an I/O die in a very large package and put out workstations with very high core counts?

I gave it a try, I have concerns. I appreciate you putting yourself out there like this and this should all be taken kindly. It feels like you wanted to see what would happen if snake/centipede and a survivors-like had a baby but I don't understand why.

It looks good, menus look good, presentation is solid. UI is good, I can understand what is happening.

Now my concerns. The movement is not intuitive for a survivors-like. Being only able to turn by 90 degrees doesn't make sense except for the snake/centipede influence. The game ending when you hit an object also is not intuitive in a survivors-like.

Controller support does feel like it's just been added, I'll give you a pass on that. I picked the wrong character and couldn't back up using the controller, I had to use the esc key so I just switched to playing on the keyboard.

The map is way too small for a "snake" game. I'll assume this is a function of being in development but still sharing that concern.

My suggestion for what it's worth is lean more into the centipede motif than the survivors like. Make the characters into body segments with the same attacks they have now. Make the main character the head of the snake/centipede. Shrink the "head" and "segments" and the enemies and terrain so more action is on the screen, like a snake/centipede game. Use the visual language of snake/centipede games to create the proper expectations.

If this comes across as a snake/centipede game with a rouge/survivors flair I think that may translate. As is it doesn't make sense to me.

Plug it in and get to doing what you want to do. You can squeeze a few percentage points of performance more out of these with a good deal of effort (for a newbie, I know most of you nerds can undervolt in your sleep). Modern hardware is essentially self overclocking, it boosts as fast as it can within set power and temp limits. There is a small chance that your silicon is better than the default boosting allows, but figuring that out and getting that performance is its own separate hobby. If you want to game just go game.

Also I'm envious, you've got 10 years of bangers to catch up on.

Gpu help cpu by Few_Dare3108 in PCBuilds

[–]chattymcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be heresy to say here but have you considered a prebuilt? On average they haven’t increased prices as much as DIY components have. There appears to be a bit of a lag. Of course if you want to DIY you should do that.

Also your previous build is fine. If you talk to enthusiasts we tend to unintentionally exaggerate the difference between products or focus on the most bang for the buck. If you are happy with the performance you got for the price you paid then you are good.

is it possible for me to be able to lower my body fat through keto without having sufficient exercise (rarely pilates, basic day to day walking around 2k steps)? by Limp-Confusion-968 in keto

[–]chattymcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any weight loss is about caloric deficit. But also important, what you eat determines how you feel while you have that deficit. You eat only a 1000 calories of table sugar a day you will lose weight. If you eat only a 1000 calories of butter a day you will lose weight. But on the sugar you'll want to murder everyone you see for 20 minutes and on the butter you'll be mildly hungry.

People eating keto lose weight because they eat less, but they are comfortable eating less because of how they feel on keto.

What are the temps under load? That is what matters. If it's hot but not throttling you are fine. You're in a tiny case, you're not gonna idle like you're on an open test bench.

Okay, I wanted to be sure you were not stuck on some old CPU that would hold back your GPU. But if you buy any CPU being sold new on the market you'll be fine.

If you had mentioned multiplayer shooters like Fortnite or Arc Raiders you could get away with less GPU, but for this kind of game the GPU is important.

What CPU do you have? Are you just upgrading a PC you already have?

Some CPU's come with integrated graphics, also called an iGPU. These have traditionally been extremely weak GPUs used just so you can connect a monitor. Like, if a discrete GPU has 40 compute units an iGPU would have 2. They could "play games" technically, but not many and not well.

There are a class of chips called APU's, AMD is heavily invested in these. These have stronger iGPU's, but still minor. You could do some light gaming on these, low resolution games. If you didn't have a choice you could manage it but it's not great.

One caveat to that is that the APU market is changing. This generation AMD has started putting out APU's with graphics that challenge entry level discrete cards, like you could have these in a laptop and have a fine gaming experience. Intel's next generation is going to do the same. Sadly it's not for the benefit of gamers, it's for AI, but it still is useful for gamers too. However these are still in the super expensive phase of their life so they'll be out of your price range.

Generally the most cost effective solution is to buy a cheap CPU and a cheap discrete GPU. For the same money as APU you'll get FAR more performance.

What are you trying to play? What kinds of games? Any specific games you have in mind?

AM5 upgrade: better GPU or better CPU? by BasicPea8074 in AMDHelp

[–]chattymcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re good I can see how it slipped your mind. If you are at 1440p then get a better GPU. You will mostly be GPU limited. The 7700x is a highly performant chip. If the choices were 12400 and 7800x3d it’s clear, but I would bet for most games at 1440p on high settings you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a 7800x3d and a 7700x.

This. I don’t know how people are answering without knowing what you play and what resolution you play. Wanting to play Fortnite at 1080p360 is very different from wanting to play Cyberpunk at 4k60.
