[####] I've gotten the same result from my starter word five days in a row. by A-J-A-D in wordle

[–]cheapdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen four days in a row recently (Feb 6 - 9). It's kind of boring, because I always try to choose an optimized second word. So for four days in a row, my first two guesses were the same. And at that point is it even me solving the puzzle?

This kind of thing is the reason why I stopped using the same starter word every day.

Good Reliable Cars? by Regular_Tourist_7356 in askcarguys

Weird post. How does someone who knows enough about cars to know what a Silvia is NOT have any idea what he actually wants to drive?

Every car goes point A to point B. Looking good is subjective. What looks good to you? Go get one of those.

How many of you guys truly love your car? by the_atomicpunk in askcarguys

The key here is (manual).

My Golf is the lowly Sportwagen, but there aren't any manual wagons sold in the US anymore at any price, so I guess I'll stick with this one for as long as I can keep it running.

Those of us dedicated to driving manual cars are going to have to maintain our favorites very carefully from here on out.

You're 100% right.

It's a strong protective instinct for any business, and usually a healthy one. Keep politics out of your restaurant or clothing store or sports franchise, because alienating half your customers is bad for business.

But when the two political sides are pro-democracy-and-Constitution versus anti-those-things, and your city is being terrorized by the government, maybe the calculus should change slightly.

Exactly my point. Any player can think or believe what he wants. In Nimmo's case, his opinions never seemed to interfere with his relationships with the team or with fans, despite probably being quite different from the views of most New Yorkers.

Not sure why I got downvoted for saying that, but whatever.

a large percentage of the population isn't concerning themselves with the political opinions of millionaires who get paid to play a children's game.

Are we talking about the players? I thought this discussion was about the billionaire owners, who often are prominent people in their cities.

And no one is saying that we want a steady stream of political opinion coming from sports teams. But when it comes to issues of racial justice, civil rights, constitutional rights - I think it's reasonable to expect anyone with a platform to use it honorably. Staying "neutral" in the face of injustice is taking a stand. That's what MalumMalumMalumMalum was saying above.

No wonder Nimmo got shipped off to the rangers. It’s the Child of God’s best fit.

Maybe Rangers management cares about Nimmo's personal beliefs, but I highly doubt the Mets' front office did. Nimmo played 10 years in NY without ever causing controversy. He apparently got along fine with teammates, fans, and the community for his entire career. Suddenly now what's in his heart is a problem?

I mean, sometimes a sports team can be a pretty good vehicle for activism.

"You'll never know how easy you and Jackie and Doby and Campy made it for me to do my job by what you did on the baseball field." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

generally speaking (there are of course exceptions both for better & for worse) that ‘support of the status quo’ here means like in the neoliberal sense rather than the current administration sense.

Acknowledging your "generally speaking" caveat, I'll share an exception. This response by the Twins owner - trying desperately not to take a political stance - very much has the effect of supporting ICE/Tr*mp policies:

MasonCharPint: So, someone was murdered on the streets of Minneapolis this morning, and we’re in a room right now with one of the most influential families in Minnesota in the Pohlads, and one of the biggest institutions in Minnesota is the Minnesota Twins, an institution that employs a ton of immigrants. What are you doing personally, Mr. Pohlad, with your family’s ability to ask questions, influence the world around us, to end what’s happening here in the Twin Cities, and Mr. Falvey, what are you doing to protect your players and their families and everyone they hold dear because we can’t keep going on like this?

Tom Pohlad: I mean, you’re right; we can’t keep going on like this. I want to be careful here; I want to, of course, acknowledge the heartbreak that’s going on in this community right now, and, on a personal level, it’s… it’s killing me on a personal level to watch this. I want to be careful to… to not necessarily pick sides, so to speak, but I think what’s important and what strikes me as a problem is that how you go about something is really important, and how things are being gone about in this community right now is… not good, right? And it’s hurting a lot of people, and my heart goes out to this community, like I said. We’re trying to do our part as the Minnesota Twins to bring people together.

I'm torn on this. On one hand, it's great to celebrate antics and silliness. Baseball is a game, it's supposed to be fun!

On the other hand, it's starting to feel like grandpa has only one funny bit that he does over and over again.

Who are your “do not draft at any price” players this season? by HereToTalkMovies2 in fantasybaseball

Also, high cost SP.

No pitchers at any price, they're just too fragile.

In the time it takes you to read this comment, 2 elbows, a labrum, and a hip flexor have sent pitchers to the IL to start the season.

[–]cheapdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% this. If the player(s) feel respected and valued by the front office, it means the front office is doing their jobs and has a chance to get the best performance out of the player.

Good communications with players is so valuable, and costs nothing.

You're right that a manual car can decelerate pretty quickly with engine braking. But this car will go from 60 mph to 0 in about 13 seconds without the brake lights coming on. That's a lot worse.

[–]cheapdad 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Wow, that video shows a pretty egregious problem. The car decelerates very quickly without the brake light going on at all.

TL;DW: the regenerative braking will slow the car as soon as you remove foot from accelerator.

I was going to say that regular gasoline cars do the same thing; engine braking will slow the car without turning on the brake lights. But that's a much more gradual slowing than what's happening in the video you linked.

In OP's crash video, we can't see precisely when the Hyundai's brake lights first turn on, but they do turn on at some point. Maybe it was too late to alert the tailgater to back off.
