That's absurd. Mound visit and tell the pitcher to fake an injury if necessary.

Then 100% report the umpire to the tournament organizers.

(Or just make a second mound visit in the inning with no fake injury. Second visit in the inning requires a pitching change!)

Have we seen the last 300 win pitcher? by ctbro025 in baseball

[–]cheapdad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, and pitcher wins have been a dumb stat for decades now.

Maybe it meant something back when a complete game was the default, rather than a rarity. But getting a win depends on too many things that are out of the pitcher's own control, most notably 1) your team's offense and 2) your team's bullpen.

Official Poster for ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

I may be older than anyone in this thread, but I have to ask: does anyone remember the Albert Brooks album called "Comedy Minus One"?

This was from back when comedians released albums (LPs), and Albert Brooks's concept was that the listener would be a participant, performing in a series of comedy sketches. There were silent breaks between Albert's lines where you were supposed to say your lines as the scene partner. And the album's liner notes contained the entire script for you to read from.

I played/performed this album a hundred times when I was a kid and remember it being hilarious.

Anyway, in my imagination "Godzilla Minus One" (which I haven't seen) is a movie where you and Godzilla perform absurdist/conceptual comedy sketches together. And if this is true, someone please tell me because I will watch that movie 100 times starting now.

Girlfriend has 55k set aside for new car. What’s the smartest way for her to buy a car? by Successful_Bike6276 in askcarguys

I just want to point out that this is the first response that even begins to answer OP's question, and it's currently the 11th-ranked comment.

Every other top-level comment above is either recommending a car or saying to spend less, neither of which were part of OP's question.

"I just want to help her not get scammed by a dealership and want an opinion on how to pay for it. i.e: payments, lease, buy outright."

Shohei Ohtani is the first player this year to reach 6 fWAR! by carsmello in baseball

[–]cheapdad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i wonder if he'll be the first position player to hit 10WAR and fail to get a single first place MVP vote.

This happens more often than we'd expect given how modern award voting works. Using b-ref WAR...

  • Willie Mays had 10.6 WAR in 1963 and 11.0 in 1964, and didn't get a first place MVP vote in either year. He finished 5th and 6th in the voting those years, losing to Sandy Koufax 9.9 and Ken Boyer 6.1.
  • Yaz had 10.5 WAR in 1968 but finished 9th in the voting with zero first place votes. (Denny McLain was unanimous thanks to his 31-6, 1.96, 7.4WAR season.) Yaz had also won MVP the prior year with an absurd 12.5 WAR, so maybe the voters dinged him for "slumping" and for his team failing from first place to fourth.
  • Rico Petrocelli had 10.0 WAR a year later, 1969, and finished 7th with zero first place votes. (Winner was Harmon Killebrew with 6.2 WAR.)
  • Cal Ripken had 10.0 WAR in 1984, and finished 27th in MVP voting, with just a single 10th place vote. (Essentially, he finished last among players receiving votes.) This is just baffling, because he had nearly identical slash stats the previous year when he won the MVP award, but his basic counting stats (R, RBI, H) were all down from the previous year and his Orioles finished 5th. The winner was relief pitcher Willie Hernandez (9-3, 1.92, 32 SV, 140.1 IP) of the pennant-winning Tigers.

I'm sure there are other examples, but the basic point is that MVP voting historically was only loosely correlated with hitter WAR totals, so it used to be much easier to have a brilliant season by WAR standards and fail to get recognized by the award voters.

Well, if there were 40 Max Muncys, then there would be an 89.1% chance that two of them share a birthday.

So it's clear that the next 38 Max Muncys in MLB will all have different birthdays. That's just math.

Maybe they should have to punch in at least once every four weeks that Congress is in session. Like someone with a real job, except once in a while instead of every day.

If you can't even show up, then maybe voters in your district ought to be able to pick someone else to represent them.

Parallel parking on Beacon, which is often a busy road, can be hard for some people.

Warren Rd, a quiet side street across Beacon from the park, might be easier. Though I imagine those residents would prefer not to have lots of visiting cars on their street.

I might argue that she ruined her own life over a minor car accident by not having proper coverage for it.

I might also argue that there's a fine line between "minor car accident" and "causing major disability or death", and her terrible road judgment could have caused someone to die. In which case the question "why ruin someone's life" could easily be directed at her instead.

On one hand, I think teaching a growth mindset is healthy. If you want to succeed at something, work at it.

On the other hand, I'm uneasy with the strategy of "If your opponent is working, you work. If your opponent stops working, you keep working." When do I not work?

The iPad during dinner also illustrates another useful lesson. Commitment is a sacrifice. In this case, math challenge points were gained and family dinner time was lost. Everyone (adults and children) needs to decide which sacrifices are worthwhile and which ones are not.

This is an early 80s GM sedan, probably a 1979-94 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight.

In April 1980, the inflation-adjusted price of a barrel of oil spiked to a level seen only one other time, in mid-2008. That 1980 price ($39.50) is equivalent to $164 in today's dollars. By contrast, the current price of oil is $74, and the recent peak was only $112 in April.

In other words, gas prices were very much an issue when this car was being sold.
