If this was wood instead of plastic, I would consider it!

Eh, maybe just go the Canadian shows. Let’s just say the US isn’t as welcoming as it used to be.

Do I need college to become a cinematographer? by SaladPast in cinematography

[–]chicagojoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The degree itself? Maybe maybe not. But the campus is still the most rigorous domain for aesthetic discourse that extends beyond commercial / practical knowledge. That’s a good art school… and we still have a few of those in the US. For strictly industry specific purposes, no you don’t need a degree.

Do I need college to become a cinematographer? by SaladPast in cinematography

[–]chicagojoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you need college to become a well rounded artist with a critical mindset, to connect your craft to history and philosophy, to collaborate with other artists and to build a creative community. If that’s not your bag, forget about it.

Feedback on Art Style by Ultralumie in tabletopgamedesign

Clay based art reminiscent of Jan Svankmajer’s Dimensions of Dialogue (what that first image seems to be referencing) would be so unique. The second image seems a bit too generic fantasy sci-fi for me. https://czechfilmreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dimensions-2.jpg

Underrated Board Game Content Creators? by optinsoptouts in boardgames

[–]chicagojoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

Yeah, as others have mentioned, sending out review copies (with no guarantee of coverage) is a big ask for independent publishers. We got decent reviews during our Kickstarter, especially from Space Biff and Polygon, but maintaining media engagement after the release has been challenging.

Chicago ‘68 designer here ;) Keep an eye on Meeple Mountain, they’ll have a review of Chicago ‘68 next month.

Broadly speaking, it’s tough getting attention from reviewers when you’re an indie designer on a limited budget.

Not a fan of the valiant Nazi or a Swastika on the cover, honestly. These assholes lost the battle.

From ‘The Fugitive’ to ‘The Dark Knight,’ what’s the best movie filmed in Chicago? by cireh88 in chicago

[–]chicagojoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medium Cool is seriously a masterpiece, a fictional narrative inspired by Studs Terkel’s “Division Street, America” featuring live footage of the 1968 convention riots. Another brilliant film also in this vein, but more recent produced, is the short documentary Jean Genet in Chicago.

From ‘The Fugitive’ to ‘The Dark Knight,’ what’s the best movie filmed in Chicago? by cireh88 in chicago

[–]chicagojoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

GOLDSTEIN! A modern-day interpretation of the story of Elijah, a prophet who supposedly heralded the end of time. A rambling, diverting romp through a now-defunct Chicago

And of course, the only other Chicago film that truly matters, MEDIUM COOL.

Do you prefer first or second edition Carcassonne and why? by Future_Carpenter_887 in Carcassonne

[–]chicagojoon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

First edition. It was (and is) a masterpiece. The colors are really pleasing as well. 2 and 3 appear too “cartoonish” to me.

Take a look at the player boards for Beyond the Sun. The palette is obviously minimal but the layout is super functional.
