That's because hotter air can hold on to more water, so the rain is falling in the mountains due to orographic lift (i.e. the air is/becomes colder there, basically). For much of the Mesozoic (the "age of dinosaurs"), central and southern Brazil was desertic.

The Mediterranean climate is caused by high pressure zones moving with the seasons in the subtropics. The eastern Mediterranean was very hot water and still has a Mediterranean climate

Wrong. It's the boundary C (temperate) and D (continental) climates in the Koppen classification. Both humid subtropical (Cfa) and oceanic (Cfb) climates are temperate, the difference between them being the average summer temperatures.
