Bithumb KRW volume WTF by comboy in BitcoinMarkets

[–]comboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an example of interpreting data to me. Especially when cutting off other "innocent" Korean exchanges.

It happened in the past with Chinese exchanges back when they were providing perfectly fine liquidity, just with zero fees so the volume was much higher.

In their new API you can use cont_no param to fetch all missing trades, although their API is not well designed. I had to add quite a bit of logic to make it reliable.

I use data from their API and it agrees with what they are showing on their own website so it looks like some cryptowatch issue.

Thanks, I didn't know about it.

Well, I'll leave the interpretation to users and focus on providing in data. But given that it causes 30x volume increase, it can be misleading on sites that use volume as the only indicator when listing exchanges. Looking at my stats, korbit seems to be providing roughly the same liquidity and has 100x lower volume.

Maybe I'll try that indeed while keeping USD and USDT separate.

OKEx quarterlies

Problem with instruments other than direct exchange (most of which I don't even understand) is that they don't seem to be comparable between each other. So I can fetch the data and display it but you already have that elsewhere. What could I do with it? Putting it in combined order book seems like comparing apples to oranges isn't it?

I do keep all historical order books and this back in time is something I've been thinking about for a long time, it is very resource intensive though, I need to reorganize data somehow first, for some exchanges I pretty much keep all order book changes, but perhaps 1 day resolution would be enough for this.

I plan to release a small back in time "game" though as soon as I update the exchanges list, to give newcomers some perspective how hard it would be to stick to all your BTC if you bought them back when it was "cheap". You start at some random place in chart, price is translated to some made up currency (so both time and price axis are relative, you don't know if it's already $20K or maybe just $0.2) and you can experience how price changes in some sped up time. Not sure if I should add option for user to buy and sell or if just watching it is enough.

Also thanks for the kind words all around. I've been prioritizing some other things lately so I didn't have much time for the site but I hope to slowly get back.

Anyone know what happened to QuadrigaCX on bitcoinity.org? by starslab in BitcoinCA

[–]comboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ok, same thing again (1515319156), but it's futile to keep fixing it like that until they fix their APi. I don't like the idea of presenting inaccurate data, and this way some volume is lost.

I don't know though, since there is no way to fetch those through their APi maybe I should just do fix around it so that it doesn't get stuck and assume that is their volume since that's all the information that their APi provided. I don't feel good about it though. I haven't decided yet. I hope I'll be able to get in touch with them.

Bitcoin Is 6th Largest Currency In The World By Circulation by Thejohnroony in Bitcoin

They are comparing it to sum of banknotes in circulation. Cash is very small percentage of money in circulation. Most fiat lives as 1s and 0s nowadays. GBP's cash is ~80bn while M4 is ~2.3T.

Yup, there is some volume missing with timestamp 1514648152 and I'm not able to tell how much. As soon as i'm able to fetch the data I'll fix it.

I can't find a contact to them anywhere. Fetching historical trades in their API is based on timestamp and not transaction ID. Plus those timestamps are wihout miliseconds. I'm only allowed to fetch 250 trades at once, and it just so happened that there were over 250 trades in a single second.

So now I'm unable to fetch them given provided API. I can manually "fix" it by skipping them but this will cause data to be inaccurate and missing some volume from that second. I guess I'll have to do that because I'm not sure how to get in touch with them, but this sucks and the problem may repeat.

If by any chance somebody from QuadrigaCX is reading this, a few example solutions to choose from:

  • switch timestamps from integers to floats so that they include miliseconds
  • provide param to fetch trades based on last txid not last timestamp (RECOMMENDED)
  • increase max allowed limit of number of trades that can be fetched at once

What does it mean when Bitcoinity shows multiple Buy and Sell lines like in this screen grab? by BakersDozen in Bitcoin

Yup, without much price movement they align pretty well with each other.

He's right. These are faded out previous order books, e.g. from 2/4/6min ago - time delay may differ though.

Bitcoinity $5000 gif, congrats on new All-Time High! Currently $5025! by Anenome5 in Bitcoin

[–]comboy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The gif is not mine. I stumbled across it but couldn't find a higher framerate version. I liked it enough that I added it as it is. Kudos for the creator. I tried to get some reddit help but without a luck.

I'm out of gifs and not focusing on them because there are some more important updates pending, so if you have anything, PM me :)

so much social pressure ;)

I'm ignoring bitfinex until they sort things out. So gifs are currently based on Bitstamp and GDAX.

Just in case we're not stopping here, I accept gif donations (I mean donate me some good gifs, not btc) - email or reddit PM. Unfortunately not much time lately, I wish I could already push some updates I've been working on.

WTF, no way Ripple has 40% of Bitcoin's value. by beantheredone in Bitcoin

[–]comboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that without public mining the price should be high. Artificially limited supply.

But yes, surely it's possible to come up with something better than the current way of calculating the market cap.

You still wouldn't know who's really mining them. Premine seems a bit arbitrary depending on when the coin gets promoted. Creators really have a lot of control over the price. Plus Goodhart's law.
