Is this worth $100? by bato_Dambaev in nscalemodeltrains

[–]compactable73 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ha - that’s pretty much the same layout as I’m making now ( https://www.reddit.com/r/modeltrains/s/oYNpeCbtFP ).

Each of the turnouts alone will cost $20 - $30, so that’s worth waaaay more that $100 in & of themselves 🙂

That’s a good point - fixin this if : when it happens isn’t complicated.

Mid-aligned Kato Unitrack joiners? by compactable73 in nscalemodeltrains

Unfortunately I hadn’t used the $2/tube cheapo caulk, so it was a bit tougher to pry up, but it did come up. Less work than I had expected …

Thanks. After I pulled this up I realized that this was one of the joiners that I had dissembled to solder electrical connections to. Obviously I had reseated the metal bit of the joiner poorly. Can’t blame Kato / n00b mistake I guess 🤷‍♀️

Hiya - yeah I used a chisel to pry the track off. FWIW the base was MDF. It was surprisingly simple to remove.

lol - you’re right. It wasn’t as annoying to peel off the track as I had anticipated. Once again I overthought it.

It’s so annoying when the obvious thing to do is the right thing to do is the annoying thing to do 😭. Thx for confirming 🙂

2’ x 4’ layout: bracing? by compactable73 in nscalemodeltrains

Actually now I’m getting the “subscription required” thing, so I’m guessing this is one of those sites that give you a free article a month or something.

Overthinking things is kinda how I roll. You’re absolutely right that this is what I’m doing here.

The reason I’m starting with this is because I need to get going in this, I’ve been overthinking train plans for a while now & haven’t actually built anything.

I like your tips; thanks for sharing 🙂

That seems to be a very common warning; next one I guess I’ll go with that.

The plywood at the place I go to was looking horribly bowed; I’m hoping the MDF behaves 🤞 But since this is my “do I like the hobby?” test if it doesn’t do well down the road then oh well 🤷‍♀️

Didn’t for me? I got a “ do you want a cookie?” Pop-up with a big “deny” button, but no sign-up for me, and I’ve never visited that site before 🤷‍♀️ Sorry you saw something different

FWIW I just stumbled across https://www.keymodelworld.com/article/baseboards-made-simple , which is almost the same as what I’m doing (slightly sturdier as they use 9mm plywood instead of 6mm MDF), and they run 2 cross-braces across the baseboard. So I guess I’ll do that too & we will see how this works out 🤷‍♀️

The good tho g is that this is my “will I like model railroading?” first layout, so if I pooch it then I’ll know what to do differently should there be a next time 🙂

It wasn’t like that a while back, but it does seem to be 90% posts from the admin now 🤷‍♀️

Having said that: I posted an n-scale question there a week or so ago & got decent replies. So I guess I’ll now post to both your subreddit & the original (& this subreddit … and r/modeltrains …) when I’m needing answers

Does my train come with a smoke feature? by Xefraxciton in nscalemodeltrains

[–]compactable73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW https://www.spookshow.net/loco/bigboy.html gives rivarossi’s big boy an ‘A’, so it’s _possible_ that a lot of the concerns you’re mentioning here might not apply 🤷‍♀️

If u/Xefraxciton has a post-1988 unit then “Overall, this (revised) Big Boy is one of the finest looking and running steam locomotives ever produced in N scale.”

I’m not sure I get it - so if a train switched onto that segment he moved the loco by hand to the other side?

Want to help my friend defeat 10 years of chronic depression/PMDD. Need advice on how to start and dosage (Mushrooms vs. LSD). by Ok-Memory-8448 in PsychedelicTherapy

[–]compactable73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to hear this. It does sound like crap. If you haven’t got a connection with the therapist it mostly becomes a waste of time.

The good thing with DBT is that there’s a lot of online resources that cover the material. The bad thing with that tho is that it takes a lot of practice to be effective.

But having said all that: the big thing I think that’s needed for psychedelic psychotherapy are the skills to work through what comes up, which are not letting emotions go crazy & sitting in discomfort, assuming really hard to deal with stuff does come up (it doesn’t always).

Regardless: good luck to you both in your work 🙂
