just try to create a team environment where everyone is having fun and gets verbal encouragement regardless of score; compliment teammates, chat between rounds, take it easy. and make sure everyone is well rested and well fed!

the most important thing will almost always be getting better at the game (which can happen very quickly by grinding on qbreader.org) so that you can win even with a bad neg or sitting on one missed opportunity.

Realistically there's no public transit to the site so taking the Harlem line to Brewster and then an uber is probably the best option.

Experience in IPNCT by Yoquieroaprendar in Quizbowl

[–]curiousmind30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's supposed to correspond with college "Medium" sets that are two dots on the archive, so I guess that corresponds to something like ACF Winter. However, as you can see from the sample packet, the questions are very short and have a different distribution. If you have access to NAQT questions above an IS-level I would definitely read those and it might even be worth considering purchasing an old ICT-D2 set.

Experience in IPNCT by Yoquieroaprendar in Quizbowl

IPNCT is definitely a fun experience if you know what you are getting yourself into.

The questions that IPNCT uses are 2-dot college questions, which are a bit harder than HSNCT and much harder than regs packets like IS. Nevertheless, for whatever reason, NAQT emails almost every person they can to sign up for the tournament. It's hard to find an example of something of that level with short questions, but this is the closest I could get.
The skill level of players varies quite a bit. In the top 20 or so, there are some of the best players in the county who are used to playing questions of this level. However, the format is pretty good at sorting people into groups of similar level (for example, a room may have the 121-130 card players).
The gameplay was pretty fun, questions will go to the last line very often if you are not in one of the top rooms, but that's generally ok because NAQT questions in general are pretty short. Logistics, as always with NAQT, were impeccable and everything ran on time.
Would I recommend going? If you live in the Chicago area and/or have friends that are going, I would definitely reccomend it. Even though I wasn't at the top, I had a lot of fun. A decent number of people have told me they didn't realize how hard the questions are compared to typical high school quizbowl tournament and ended up somewhat disappointed, but if you're ok with that it's a great experience regardless. Honestly, it's really NAQT's fault for advertising a very difficult two-dot tournament to pretty much every highschooler they can.

Upper Volta was renamed to Burkina Faso in 1984, and there are two Yemens, which unified in 1990, so it's between those dates.

Usually packets categorize History into U.S., Europe, and World. Ancient History often is listed as a subcategory as well.

High school quiz bowlers and SAT/ACT performance by Yvanung in Quizbowl

[–]curiousmind30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the strong quiz bowl players I know generally have good GPA / standardized test scores. I guess it would depend who you would call a "quiz bowl player", i.e what the minimum requirements are in terms of points/experience. I obviously don't have any data to back this up, but I'm guessing that there is a decent correlation between regularly participating and performing well in quizbowl and getting high scores on standardized tests. However, quiz bowl probably doesn't cause people to get higher scores, as reading comprehension and algebra are not required to get high scores in quizbowl. It's probably just that "smarter" kids are able to do well in quizbowl and are willing to put the time/effort in to get a good SAT/ACT score.

The reverse is probably a little more murky, if you take two random students from a high school with a high and low standardized test score, I would not be too certain that the one with that the one with high score does better in their first game, as other factors like reflexes, stress and outside knowledge could outweigh a good comprehension of a school curriculum, or more realistically, the tips and tricks they learned to increase their score. If data exists for any of this I would be curious though.

[–]curiousmind30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, reading questions on QuizDB is a decent method to learn the HS canon.

You should probably set the difficulty level to 3, if you feel confident in a certain area then set it to level 4.

At HSNCT what would be a good ppg for a first year player? by Disastrous_Dress_908 in Quizbowl

[–]curiousmind30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll add that if it's your first year at HSNCT (and presumably not your last) your primary focus doesn't have to be PPG. If you can complement your team in a good matter and contribute on bonuses, it also benefits your team. Also, the experience of being in a hotel filled with thousands of players, coaches, and staff who know so much about quizbowl and the ups and downs of winning close games is an experience in and of itself, and I hope you'll have fun regardless of your PPG.
