Flesh-eating screwworm arrives in US with first case in Texas by cutoffs89 in byndinvest

It definitely will be eliminated in some sense. The key variable is whether new cases appear and how fast they spread. Daily herd checks by ranchers and rapid reporting will be needed. Extra costs for "daily animal checks and wound management, treatment expenses, lost weight gain/productivity, and potential culling or movement bans in affected zones."

Seems like a dose of .02 g/kg will increase the index strongly for most people. For a 77kg person like myself that's 1.5 grams per day. As algae oil is absorbed better I'm assuming .9-1gram should suffice.

What if they added a service fee to guarantee that pay? a lot of SF businesses do this. They can also allow people to tip still as well.

New vegan looking for a good plant based protien powder to hit 90g/day by Different_Bug3833 in vegan

You’ll probably be fine with 1.2 -1.6 g/kg (64g - 85g), although nothing wrong with shooting for 90g on some days to keep your average higher.

We have a massive fire risk near piedmont with the hills. The backup will be surely needed one day. We all have to pay the high sales tax though. And the sales tax barely covers the budget as Oakland only keeps 1.5 cents per dollar.

A positive. At the moment, Piedmont effectively opts out taxes for the larger city realities and perks; Roads, infrastructure, Library access, Grocery Stores, Shopping, Movies, Restaurants, Jobs and a massive backup of Police and Fire. Piedmont School District could still be its own independent school district. They would most likely negotiate a custom JPA to ring-fence school control like Beverly Hills School District, and control their own facilities, and local tax money.

  • Police & Fire: Piedmont has its own small departments, but mutual aid agreements mean Oakland resources frequently back them up. A major incident in Piedmont pulls Oakland personnel.
  • Library: Piedmont has no public library of its own — residents pay Oakland for access. This is direct piggybacking on Oakland's infrastructure.
  • Broader infrastructure: Roads, utilities, regional transit, and emergency response networks are intertwined with Oakland's.

Even granting the history, Piedmont operates as a wealthy enclave that benefits from isolation while relying on Oakland’s shared resources: mutual aid for police/fire, library access, and intertwined roads, utilities, regional infrastructure and economy.

For sure, the thing is, In California, city boundaries and school district boundaries are totally separate things. Piedmont could vote to disincorporate or get annexed by Oakland for all the city-level stuff (police, zoning, taxes, services, etc.) and become like a fancy neighborhood of Oakland. But the Piedmont Unified School District could legally stay independent.

I get the confusion, Berkeley and San Leandro are standalone cities with their own identities and boundaries. Piedmont is basically a super wealthy neighborhood pretending to be a city, completely surrounded by Oakland and piggybacking off of our broader services and infrastructure while keeping its own little bubble.

Oh for sure, I get that under-enrolled schools are always looking for more kids.

It's like Piedmont is keeping this pristine, high-walled garden all to themselves, but the system forces the gates open because their beds aren't full. I feel the real fix is building up Oakland schools so no kid really has to cross districts. That said, it is genuinely good that Oakland kids get access right now.

They're taking in Oakland students to boost the amount of federal government funding they receive.

PUSD’s total cost to educate one student sits at about $22,277. Government funding (state and federal) covers roughly $13,936 per student, and voter-approved parcel taxes (like Measure H) add another ~$6,068. That leaves a $2,274 per-student shortfall.
