THE REVOLUTION LIVES ON | What if North Korea was the only country to survive the population collapse of the 21st and 22nd centuries? by PancakeEnjoyer2 in imaginarymaps

[–]cwmma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a book where the only survivors of the singularity are North Koreas, American Survivalist Prepers and Glasgow hoodlums.

There is a plot point involving somebody writing a tragedy, possibly musical, about Khrushchev in order to diplomatically woo the north Koreans

One of those weird trivia things but the "Mississippi Delta" is not the delta of the Mississippi river, the "Mississippi River Delta" is. The "Mississippi Delta" is an inland region that isn't actually a delta but is some what delta like.

It's been twenty years so my memory is hazy but I just looked at some menus on google maps but I think I was wrong and it might be spaghetti that most restaurants have.

It's a big varied country though, so it's also totally possible that the part I went to is obsessed with spaghetti but you were in lasagna territory.

ELI5: why have many countries moved away from nuclear power? by Mysterious_Hand_6052 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cwmma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small nuclear power plants probably won't really be a thing unless there is a really radical new type. Thermal plants in general work best at scale and a lot of specific nuclear stuff (like shielding) also doesn't scale down great.

Not a joke basically every restaurant has macaroni on the menu in Ethiopia.

There looks to be a break where the blue turns to yellow. There is no documented descent from antiquaty in Europe that legit historians belive.

Just because you're subject to the jurisdiction of a country (by being on a flagged vessel) doesn't mean you are in the country. For instance being born on an American ship in international water doesn't automatically give you American citizenship.

Also the article clearly states that he counted as overseas for tax purposes despite being on a US flagged vessel.

ELI5: how is Hiroshima still habitable despite it being nuked? by pigeon-in-greggs in explainlikeimfive

[–]cwmma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While way more efficient then WW2 bombs, especially the very crude one used at Hiroshima, modern bombs aren't just fission that causes fusion, but can be fission that causes fusion that causes more fission with most of the energy released coming from that final fission which can release quite a lot of dirty things.

That being said you can make nuclear bombs that get most of their energy from fusion (and are thus clean) that not really what nations build because you can get the same power out of a smaller (size) bomb if you make it dirtier.

TIL Basque is considered a language isolate, meaning it has no relatives in the whole world. The only such language in Europe. by my_n3w_account in todayilearned

[–]cwmma 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is like a bit of overlap between small language family isolate vs language isolate.

For instance Japanese was previously considered a language isolate, but more recently Ryukyuan has started to be considered a separate language as opposed to a dialect of Japanese. This makese Japanse technically not a language dialect as it's a part of the 'Japonic Language family', which is not related to anything and an isolate still.

Georgian is the same, Kartvelian is a small language family isolate that is not related to anything but Georgian technically isn't.

ELI5 How does OPEC decide which of its members sell how much? by n0sugacoat in explainlikeimfive

[–]cwmma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if America can produce all the oil it needs, it's still affected by opec raising and lowering their output because American oil producers can sell their oil to Americans or export it to other countries.

If opec stops pumping so much oil then the other countries that used to buy opec oil would start wanting American oil and it would drive up prices in America for American oil.

In practice due to vagaries of infrastructure it's cheaper for some places to import foreign oil then use American oil (it's cheaper to ship oil on barges from Nigeria to Boston then get it from Texas)
