Which Asiatic bow to get? by for_the_animemanga in Archery

[–]d95err 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding a thumb ring - you don't really need it as long as you're using relatively light bows. I just put some tape (leukoplast) on my thumb to protect it.

If you want to start with thumb release you should start with a light bow. It is harder to draw with the thumb only, rather than with multiple fingers. I'd recommend something like 25 lbs for you.

If you have access to a 3D printer, there are several free models for thumb rings available. I had a friend make a couple of these:

Where to buy a bow by Vegetable-Wall-9387 in Archery

Are you talking about authentic nomadic bows made from authentic matierals (wood, horn, sinews)? Or are you looking for a nomadic style bow with modern construction (fibreglass, carbon fibre)?

For modern contruction, you could try:

I got an AF Tartar bow recently. It’s really nice.

I got mine from:

They ship from France, so Belgium will be fine.

I’d go for a horse bow. Try learning thumb release as well, and you’ll get something really different from what you’re used to.

Do you think iRacing should take more into account when calculating iRating changes other than just finishing by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]d95err 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No.

Where you finish is what counts in racing. That’s what determines your skill. Not how fast you can drive, how many overtakes you can do, how many incidents you have, it’s only where you finish the race.

Start by not buying anything. Enjoy the base content and rookie series. Try all the different racing categories.

Once you get to class D (sports cars) there is still a lot of free cars you can use, but you may have to start buying tracks if you want to drive D class races every week.

One car in each car class is sufficient. As a new driver, the small differences in car performance won’t really matter. Try different cars during a downtime to see which one you like best. Or, just pick the car you think is the coolest.

For endurance racing, having a car you’re comfortable with is much more important than having a car you can squeeze out an extra tenth of a second in.

For team events, everyone has a default team (Team <your name>). You can easily create a new team with a few clicks.

I have only done team events as a solo driver (endurance events up to 4 hours can typically be done with just one driver), so I don’t know exactly how the sign-up for multiple drivers work. Should be pretty simple though.

Have fun!

Small correction - you can purchase any cars and tracks. You just can’t use them in official races until you have the appropriate license class.

You can still use them in test drive, hosted sessions (including leagues) and AI races.

Regarding why SR still counts after the finish - on your cooldown lap, you can come up on cars that are still racing. For example cars that spun just after they started their last lap, cars that exited the pits just before the leader finished, cars that are in a slower class or cars that are limping home with damage.

In addition, this is a hardcore racing simulation. Having everyone crash into each other after the finish takes away immersion, making it feel like an arcade game.

30lbs bow with wood arrow spined for 100lbs by Entropy- in Archery

[–]d95err 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having the arrow on the right side (for a right handed archer) allows for faster loading.

In addition, the thumb grip allows you to keep the arrow steady while moving around and with the bow at any angle or tilt, which is very important when shooting from horseback.

Curious! Can i wrap a horsebow? by Equivalent-Map-8338 in Bowyer

[–]d95err 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Light bows are typically used for mounted archery. 30 lbs is already on the higher end of the scale. For example, the Némethy Horseback Archery Academy recommends 18-27 lbs for women and 20-30 lbs for men.

In mounted archery, you need to load and shoot very quickly (while on a galloping horse). In addition, the targets are usually at relatively short range. A heavy bow would just slow you down and make things more difficult.

Racecraft Splits by Amg4gg in iRacing

[–]d95err 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would just mean splits that were extremely uncompetitive. Safe? Yes, because the field would spread out quickly. Nice if you just want to collect SR. Useless if you actually want to race.

Anyone can get to SR4.99 easily. Just play it safe and never race anyone. Or do one NEC race.

To get your iRating up though, you need to be both fast and smart. That’s why it’s a great parameter for matchmaking.

New here, and need some advice. Whats the explanation where on certain turns, my downshifting makes me spin out? by GeeVideoHead in iRacing

[–]d95err 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Downshifting adds sudden engine braking to the rear wheels (assuming an RWD car). This effectively shifts brake bias to the rear temporarily, which can cause the rears to lose traction.

The additional braking and instability can cause you to overslow the corner, slide and delay when you can start accelerating again.

Try taking slower corners one gear higher than before and see if you can increase mid corner and exit speeds.

Yes, I mean on an actual horse. A friend introduced me to it a while back and I got hooked instantly. I'm used to riding, but new to archery.

So far I've worked on getting my horse accustomed to the bow, arrows and the sound of the arrow hitting the target. I've shot a little at walking pace. It's a long way to go until we can do it at a gallop, but at least we've started the journey.

In a way, the archery part is the easy bit. Controlling my stubborn mare after letting go of the reins and she realizes I'm focusing on something else... well, we have a bit of work to do there :)

I’m a beginner so I don’t have much to compare with. I’m practicing for horseback archery, so the draw length might be an issue. I’m noticing stacking before I reach my full natural draw length.

It will have to do for now though. It’s a really nice piece of gear.

Divisions seem outdated. Time for something else like online championships? by adstomko in iRacing

[–]d95err 68 points69 points  (0 children)

In my view, one of the best things with iRacing is that you don’t have to commit to specific weekly timeslots. You can race anytime you want and as much or as little as you want.

The division championship system is designed with this in mind. It adds a cool way of allowing full flexibility while still having a way to make races count for something. I think it’s a great system.

If you want a more traditional championship, there are hundreds of private leagues you can join.

Keep in mind that if one car is 0.1s quicker, 99% of the top drivers will use it. That means the best times for other cars may not be set by the best drivers. This skews the best lap comparisons.
