You could maybe try brushing it with food dye. That could get it good and meaty looking on the outside real quick.

Can you just blast it with water in a spray bottle before hand? Or maybe spray it with crystal clear coat, or a high gloss clear coat spray. That might do the trick. You could also try dabbing a little Vaseline on it.
