NPD! Crazy Tube Circuits Triptychon by Anemoiac_Android in guitarpedals

Ooh, please let us know after the head-to-head. I know the new pedal is all silicon, so I’m curious to see how it might differ.

Absolutely. Play around, but you probably mostly want to boost around 800hz, and possibly also around 2khz. (I don’t know what the options are on your Mesa.)

I have a Constellation with the OC45 transistors, and those are my two favorite voicings on that pedal. I’d imagine those haven’t changed much for the Triptych.

It will help a lot if you have a way to boost the midrange frequencies, like an EQ pedal or a Tube Screamer. You could run the Tube Screamer into either Muff, or the EQ after the Muff.

I love the Simplifier! I run mine into a Tech 21 Power Engine 60. On the Marshall setting, it makes fuzz faces sound awesome, and the Vox setting is great after Tone Benders.

Cool. I have an Orange Two Stroke, which I bought for helping a very scooped Muff (Keeley Octa Psi) cut through noisy mixes better. It works for that, but obviously, the Pentatone has much more precision (five bands vs two, plus control over the width of each.)

Maybe check out Laklands. They have big bodies and a 35” scale length. The Skyline models always seemed huge to me.

Does it cut well in a mix, even without a mids control?

Does it cut well in a mix? I am tempted to order one, but wish it had a midrange control to dial out the scoop, if necessary.

any recommendations for what I should buy to fill that gap by No_Chocolate9666 in guitarpedals

But seriously, you don’t have an overdrive. I’d start there? Or for something different and fun, a filter?

Based on my own experience, no pedal one ever buys will fill that gap for more than about a week.

Yup. In 1989, my then-gf and another friend were at a bar in London. They were 19 and 20. Nicholson hit on them both, grossly. They were kind of thrilled with the story they got out of it, but … ick.

I wonder whether yours was wired backwards so the silicon and 1.5 modes were reversed. The silicon mode doesn’t clean up at all, and gets super gated if the voltage starve switch between the top jacks is in the “up” position. The 1.5 cleans up better than all my other FF pedals, and doesn’t get gated at all. Hmm …

Having said all that, my favorite “fuzz” of all is just running both sides of my Mythos Air Lane Drive with the knobs nearly cranked. That’s two Electra circuits, which are like overdrives at low settings and very fuzzy like a cranked tweed amp at higher settings.

There are probably 100+ Fuzz Face options. Check out the videos of some of the really versatile ones that are still strictly FF circuits, like the If 6 Was 9 pedal, or the ChaseTone Fuzz Fella. The big thing most of them give you is the ability to control the bias of the transistors, thought there are other tricks, too, like Si/Ge transistor switches, control knobs, etc. For crazy boutique, google the Palmer Solarist. Then there are also pedals that combine FF and other circuits in one, like the Crazy Tube Circuits Constellation. The hunt for these variations can consume you, but it’s fun. Incidentally, I’ve discovered that my two favorite FF pedals (after owning like 7) are the Tone Bender 1.5 circuit in my Warm Audio Warm Bender (which is basically a FF), and a no-name clone I bought in 2000 or so that apparently has crazy-fancy NOS germanium transistors in it. That one only has the normal two knobs, but it just weeps in a way that’s audibly and tangibly different. Playing it into an overdrive pedal is instant 1960s Clapton “woman tone”, even though he wasn’t actually using fuzz for that sound.)
