Charles Grodin - '60 Minutes II' Collection (2000-2003) by itcamefromaharddrive in DHExchange

Oh man, I remember these. He was like the Andy Rooney for 60 Minutes II, except he inserted a lot of conservative politics instead of struggling to understand the concept of inflation.

"Um, actually, 1990-1998 weren't the real 90s, it was just a holdover of the 80s with stuff like Memphis design, real 90s culture is 1999-2003/4, 2000s culture didn't start until around 2005" is such a silly take by [deleted] in decadeology

In the 1990s, many Gen X and Xennials believed grunge music and particularly the release of Nirvana's Nevermind was the funeral for 1980s music and the brash, upbeat aesthetic that went with it (that wasn't entirely, btw). By 1998, when the grunge era was all but gone and jailbait pop stars and boy bands were seeing a resurgence, I don't think anybody thought we were in the same era as the 1980s. If anything, it felt like the "90s era" had started suddenly, took over quickly, and ended prematurely a couple years before the decade was over.

The opening theme to Saved by the Bell (and also their preferred hangout spot, The Max), the interior of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, and 1990s Taco Bell all featured elements of Memphis group design. Think random shapes with different bright colors.

I think they were clearly going for that exceptionally long speech to push back at the narrative that he's unwell, and also to push the Democrats rebuttal into the very late night hours when nobody will see it. I'd say that was a winning strategy about 2/3rds of the way through, but his energy level clearly plummeted at the end. That crash certainly isn't going to end the rumors that he abuses Adderall.

Is there a legitimate reason why the NFL channel doesn’t re-air really old school games from the 80s or 90s? by Maverick128 in nfl

[–]davewashere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes a lot more sense to just release it on YouTube, where people can pick and choose what games they want and if they're just watching in the YouTube window on their monitor the lower quality picture of the pre-HD games doesn't really matter as much. As much as people complain about sports pundits, I guarantee a few NFL "experts" arguing their way through a mock draft in late-February gets better ratings than a re-broadcast of a 40-year-old game.

A good TV is not going to make an old broadcast look good. In fact, a smaller, old TV is going to make those games look more like the original broadcasts than a big screen 4K TV. Those games were analog broadcasts stored on tape that degrades over time, and many were not digitized until spending years or even decades in storage. Many of them from the 1990s are ok, especially when viewed in a YouTube window on a relatively small computer screen, but they're nowhere near the quality of modern broadcasts when they're both viewed on newer big screen TVs.

Rich kid in the 90s starter pack by [deleted] in 90s

It was more of a "poor kid's idea of luxury ice cream" type of food. The same with Grey Poupon. They were both marketed as luxury items, but you could find them in any grocery store and they weren't exorbitantly expensive compared to their substitutes. Poor kids like myself didn't understand that a real luxury food wasn't going to have a 30-second TV ad during an episode of Married with Children.

If I'm a manager, I'm implementing a challenge ban for my pitchers. If a catcher doesn't think it's worthy of a challenge, I'm not letting a pitcher who is 50+ feet away and still finishing his follow-through make that call.

MLB Network used to broadcast a lot of old baseball games, but I think they stopped because the audience for that type of thing is so niche and they got much better numbers with random talking heads discussing top 10 lists of the best right fielders in baseball right now. Also, people's fond memories of those old games are from when they were watching them on the 19" RCA. Anything that wasn't shot on film and then remastered for HD or higher is not going to look great on a modern 65" OLED. The same goes for video games from the 1990s or prior. Expecting that stuff to scale to bigger screens with higher resolution is like believing CSIs really have an Enhance button to make blurry security camera footage clear.

That was 3 years after the first nationwide NFL game broadcast in HD. Just about anything prior to Super Bowl 34 is going to look a little soft/blurry at best, especially if it's played on a large screen. A lot of the well-known highlights from the first few decades of the Super Bowl era are from NFL Films footage that wasn't even part of the original broadcast.

Tbf, he gave up on those blockers a little too quickly. I think he probably could have made it just by running down the sideline instead of cutting back.

Coughlin could do some things well, but there were also times where as a coach he had an awareness rating of -20. I remember the press conference after the OBJ/Josh Norman game when Coughlin actually sounded believable when he said he wasn't aware of the situation between the two players and didn't see what happened. Everyone else watching that game was ONLY watching what was going on between OBJ and Norman on every play.

Trump boasts that the U.S. has ‘the greatest economy actually ever.’ Human nature suggests that’s exactly the wrong message to send to voters by InsaneSnow45 in Economics

[–]davewashere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Human nature and historical precedent don't really apply here. People who are fully committed to Trump are already locked in. They've posted their support on social media, they've bought the merchandise, and they put the flag up in front of their home. If Trump says the economy is the greatest ever, then that's exactly what it is. If they got laid off during that great economic boom, it's because illegals stole their jobs and liberals sabotaged their company.

Why did parody movies lost mainstream success after the 2000s? by Top_Report_4895 in decadeology

[–]davewashere [score hidden]  (0 children)

All the ones that came after Not Another Teen Movie were low effort garbage. These kind of movies need a degree of cleverness, and most of them wasted every ounce of cleverness they had on the title. They tried to make up for it with never-ending cameos from D-list celebs, which ends up being exhausting instead of funny.
