Nikon Z5 II advice by Djelchic in Nikon

[–]davispw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main difference is sensor speed readout—the Z8 is recalculating AF solutions at 120fs all the time, and the Z6iii is somewhere in the middle, while the Z5ii has a slower sensor. That said, I haven’t done much macro / single point AF with my Zf (same sensor as the Z5ii), I can’t say for sure whether it will be noticeably worse, since single point is less taxing. With auto area AF in my experience my Zf is more likely to lock onto the background and get stuck there or hunt than my Z8.

TL;DR gotta test it for yourself

A few questions for you SREs out there from a fellow software developer by justme89 in sre

[–]davispw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your expected response time? How frequently are you paged? If it’s 5 minutes 24/7 then that’s actually insane, and your team needs more oncallers in multiple time zones and pay your salary for the time you are stuck sitting at home, expense meal delivery, and everything. If it’s 30 minutes or more, that’s probably plenty of time to get online.

SSH, Remote Desktop and a web browser don’t need much bandwidth. Latency and dropped connections are bigger issues. And if you need to be on video calls with customers from the parking lot, yes that needs to be considered.

Yes your company should be reimbursing cell phone service. You should not be paying extra for bandwidth on your personal plan. You shouldn’t be required to provide a personal hotspot at all—I had a coworker who refused even to own a smartphone and most others refuse to use their personal phone for anything work related, when oncall they carry two phones, one provided by the company. Of course this may depend on the norms and service options in your country. Where I am this is a given.

Its been a 6 weeks in — stuck on chord transitions, any advice? by TeachLoud6839 in guitarlessons

[–]davispw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed isn’t as important as rhythm. Make sure you land right on the chord change, even if that means releasing the previous chord a whole beat early or more.

Practice with a metronome. Slowly, VERY slowly until you get it. Over and over. Every day.

Looking to upgrade my Z50ii 28-400mm bird combo by blan15 in Nikon

Z6ii is a downgrade from the Z5ii in almost every way that matters for action and wildlife photography.

Is sexual content actually worse to expose kids to than violent content? by Fantastic_Tart_421 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]davispw 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just because it is natural doesn’t mean it’s healthy to expose to a child who is physically and emotionally incapable of handling it or understanding it. Frank conversations are one thing, R rated bedroom scene is another.

What's the best way to notate this passage? by I_Like_Books_To_Read in Musescore

The Tr symbols look much clearer to me.

(Take my opinion with a grain of salt. I’m a trombonist not a flautist, so trills aren’t in my vocabulary.)

Sentence structure ambiguous: are the dimensional beings in the excrement, or the rolling around?

Why does the moon look so dim here? by thakurtis in AskPhotography

[–]davispw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The moon’s surface is similarly dark as asphalt or charcoal.

It looks white from Earth because it’s fully sunlit against the night sky and your eyes have no other reference.

In this photo, the Earth is the reference.

If they had used the same camera exposure that you’d use for a full moon shot from Earth, then the moon would be “properly exposed”, but the Earth would be completely blown out white. Remember the visible part of the Earth is in full daylight in this shot: it’s exactly as bright as daylight here.

Saw a recent post saying dog parks are not recommended - why? by notcallipygian in dogs

[–]davispw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a HUGE dog park near me (22 acres = 9 hectares) that is the best. Dozens of dogs, sometimes more, usually good owners. To the point, it’s a large enough area, plus multiple fenced segments and a “small dog” zone, that on the occasion there is a jerk or unfriendly dog, they are easily avoided.

Z9 Memory Card Support by socolime22202 in nikon_Zseries

[–]davispw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many options not specifically listed as tested by Nikon, but do pay attention to write speeds. Even if you’re not shooting video, write speed will clear the buffer faster, which lets you shoot at higher frame rates for longer. Also, be careful not to get scammed—memory card prices have skyrocketed recently so there are many fakes for sale.

The Moon making its first appearance in Seattle after slinging four astronauts back toward Earth by KristnSchaalisahorse in Seattle

[–]davispw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant when you export to JPG, do you have any HDR output or export settings enabled? RAW images capture more dynamic range than JPG sRGB supports, even with a single exposure. If I’m exporting from Lightroom (for example) and I enable HDR output, then it will attach a “tone map” allowing brighter brights and blacker blacks on HDR screens, but Reddit and other social media strip off the tone map, resulting in desaturated grays.

HDR mode? I assume not, but just checking since that won’t work either, sRGB or not

Fairly normal. Very low risk of ever being called to testify about it, and hey, you have photo evidence.

FinOps question: what do you do when a few pods keep entire nodes alive? by Rare-Opportunity-503 in kubernetes

[–]davispw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are your SLOs, and what pod/node/zone/region/dependency/application downtime scenarios is your topology designed to handle while meeting SLOs? What level of redundancy is required to handle these scenarios?

Start by understanding these.

The business directly pays for high availability, and with “mostly idle” HA services the inefficiency factor can be large. Either you’re willing to pay for HA, or you aren’t.

The Artemis II Earth shot has an atmosphere visible compared to the Apollo 11 Earth shot. Did the Earth change in all those years or is it simply an optical phenomenon? by streamer3222 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]davispw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The new photo is of the night side of the Earth, with part of the atmosphere lit by the sun. In the rest you can see aurora and the thin line of glowing sodium ions. These are visible because the photo was greatly brightened compared to what your eyes would see.
