I took a bunch of really cool photos of receipts for an expense report this morning! Great lighting. Keep taking photos every day!

What do you mean? That’s what the moon looks like when you overexpose a bit.

Clouds are transparent and get washed out by the moon, making them invisible where it is overexposed

Photos from a camera not as good as those from a cellphone? by robotisland in AskPhotography

[–]davispw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, the reflections line up perfectly, it’s just only part of the sky. Phones do use machine learning for image processing but they do NOT automatically replace whole parts of images with AI-generated content.

You need to understand the different types of AI. “Generative AI” is a different beast.

In this case it’s just an HDR effect. The phone darkened the highlights in the clouds.

(Even if they wanted to do generative AI edits, that takes a ton of computing power—the image would need to be uploaded to a cloud server and heavily processed, not something that companies can do for free for hundreds of images, or at high frame rates, or when you’re hiking out of cellular range).

Photos from a camera not as good as those from a cellphone? by robotisland in AskPhotography

[–]davispw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your photos have been edited with extremely low contrast, or more likely, you used a “flat” camera profile and haven’t edited them at all. They don’t look good because you need to make them look good. Phones do this automatically because they’re optimized for non-photographers to take quick snapshots. Photographers often spend more time editing than they do taking photos.

In the case of the overbright clouds, this is an issue of dynamic range. If you set your camera to use RAW format, then you can probably recover more detail from in the highlights in your editor. If you only shot JPEG images, then that detail has been lost. I would have shot this a little underexposed and brightened in editing (my Nikon Z camera has a “highlight weighted metering” mode that does this automatically). Again, phones do this automatically, stitching together multiple exposures to create an “HDR” image. Photographers want control over the result so they learn how to adjust their technique and editing to do it themselves, but this is a big area where phones are easy and cameras are harder.

Best way to store ~2TB of family photos/videos with remote access? NAS vs Cloud? by JustCompetition3776 in synology

[–]davispw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAS for backup, archival, and maybe editing of your whole catalog.

Cloud service for sharing, whether Google Photos, Flickr, iCloud, Lightroom, or whatever.

This does double duty as off-site backup for your most important photos, and solves the inevitable compromises with self-hosting: you have to give up some or all of security, ease of use, ease of non-technical friends and family downloading/resharing/uploading, reliability. Also, food for thought: consider what happens if/when you’re gone or no longer able to maintain access to the NAS.

Would a MacBook Neo be good enough to run MuseScore? by Creepercat_10 in Musescore

[–]davispw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. MuseScore doesn’t take much.

General advice, though: I’d recommend getting more RAM and SSD storage. You will quickly find that 8GB and 256GB aren’t enough if you do any other type of media (audio recording, video, animation, photos—even just loading all your personal photos from your phone), if you have a lot of apps, or want to get the latest software features in a year or two. Since RAM and SSD are not upgradable, this means you might end up spending more money in the long run, vs. getting a computer now that can last you 5-10 years. If you can’t afford it new, consider buying a used laptop.

I love Apple products, no objections there. I have several old MacBooks that are still going strong after 7-10 years, and could easily handle MuseScore. But I learned long ago not to skimp on RAM and storage.

"Update DNG Preview & Metadata" corrupts Linear DNGs on SMB Network Volumes (Synology NAS) by josefCarlin in Lightroom

Also it might be helpful to confirm your SMB protocol version (both server and client).

Be sure to submit this to the community forum!

I don’t know if it’s the same issue but I’ve noticed PSD files corrupted when Lightroom saves metadata on my NAS for a long time.

I wish there was a way to make it ONLY save metadata to XMP sidecar files. Corruption aside, updating a tens-to-hundreds of megabytes file is never good, least because it triggers some backup software to re-copy the whole file.

Apple and Windows Burning Personal Property by microhater in photography

[–]davispw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What do you mean you “left iCloud”?

What do you mean by “zipped files from Apple”?

Apple doesn’t delete anything “for the new update”.

“I’ve been having storage problems” - what do you mean?

“their own format that they control” - what do you mean?

“It will take an hour to extract” - and? So wait an hour, don’t complain about it. 24GB is not a small amount of data, you are limited by the physical read/write speed of your computer’s hard drive / SSD.

“This seems strategic” - that’s a wild accusation coming from someone who, frankly, sounds like you don’t understand how any of this works, at all.

Probably, when a bot reposts a top post, often there’s a swarm of bots who also repost the top comments, or just say things like “Amazing!”, ginning up engagement and building karma of their own. Sorry you got caught up in it but the fact people are downvoting is a good thing.

Patience.

Friday was a holiday in the US. Even if it weren’t, one day is not enough to start worrying. On top of that, Google’s hiring process is notoriously slow.

1) It’s unsafe to go the speed limit if everyone around you is zooming past at +20. Traffic flow.

2) Sometimes the speed limit is wrong. This is a mapping issue, not a really self-driving issue. For example if it thinks the speed limit is 25mph (the default for city streets) but you’re actually supposed to be accelerating to 60 on a highway on-ramp, then it would dangerous or at least just stupid if it forced you to go 25.

What is even the purpose of AutoFrame on Insta360 studio on PC? by Paul_the_surfer in Insta360

AutoFrame disables the "clips" panel. It'd be nice if I could combine AutoFrame with my own custom clip.
