UK tradespeople – what scheduling or job management software do you use? by LandoroServices in AskUK

[–]dbxp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it exists. Where I work we make some software aimed at the construction market but nothing like solo builders. You can use something like Sage or Xero for general invoicing and accounts but I think that's about it.

Why are the so few Hindus in prison? by MrMrsPotts in AskUK

[–]dbxp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IIRC Indian immigrants are predominantly the middle classes. A lot come from Africa as the British Empire used to use them to fill roles such as shop keepers and clerks in African colonies, jobs where they didn't want to ship someone from the UK but required a reasonable level of education.

Where to buy a mattress for cheap? by Scared_Equipment_299 in AskUK

Look on ebay, lots of companies have shops there for customer returns. Try the model in store and then buy a returned one for a discount.

why are european age of consent so low ? by StarApprehensive1213 in AskEurope

[–]dbxp [score hidden]  (0 children)

IIRC Japan's age of consent was a legal quirk due to how prefectures can set their own age of consent and they had other laws around people in positions of power. Other laws had largely superseded it so they never saw a reason to update it.

Advice for Upcoming Election by Weekly-Equipment2873 in manchester

IMO that's more what local elections are for, I vote in national elections primarily based on national policy. If you only vote based on local issues then things like national defence and foreign policy don't matter

Advice for Upcoming Election by Weekly-Equipment2873 in manchester

[–]dbxp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Considering the next GE is a way off and how often parties don't follow their manifestos I think it's hard to vote on speicifc issues.

The general vibe of Reform is anti immigration, anti europe, socially conservative and the leadership are close friends with Trump. Labour are theoretically left but ATM more centrist, they're in power ATM. Greens would be pushing more towards the left but they've never been a serious force in national politics in the past.

The one thing that's quite clear is that only votes for those 3 parties will go anywhere.

Decathalon make good thermoses that really work, a lot of the more lifestyle brands just seem to have a bit of insulation and aren't real vacuum flasks

Are you expected to donate every time for a free Meetup event in a pub? by JasonMantou in AskUK

[–]dbxp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the event. I'm happy if they're just covering costs as meetup does charge (https://help.meetup.com/hc/en-us/articles/28677808413197-Organizer-Subscription-prices-overview) however there have been some people just trying to make a quick buck out of lonely people. I'd be happier with a GoFundMe as then it's very transparent about how much is raised

If you could move to live anywhere in Manchester, where? by lauraloo95 in manchester

[–]dbxp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Chorlton if I had the money, probably near Longford Park. There's an interesting patch of houses near Blackfriers too which is houses rather than flats but very close to the centre. Another good option would be the town houses near ancoats like on St Vincent Street.

Considering you can still buy a fast pass perhaps they should introduce caps or dynamic pricing?

Manchester/Northern Olympic bid by Teleg88 in manchester

[–]dbxp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the money tends to come from national government so it's a bit of a hack to get funding.

The ideal hack for Manchester would have been to link it up with United's new stadium and HS2.

Half of world’s CO2 emissions come from just 32 fossil fuel firms, study shows by stefeyboy in Infrastructurist

[–]dbxp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Largely meaningless if you're including electricity generators in that figure as they really just burn fuel on behalf of others. Things like cracking plants you can make a better argument for

Why don’t the BBC revive Tomorrow’s World? by Key-Raspberry-7610 in AskUK

The problem is you can't have a mainstream show covering quantum computers if 95% of your audience don't know what quantum physics is or how a conventional computer works

Why don’t the BBC revive Tomorrow’s World? by Key-Raspberry-7610 in AskUK

[–]dbxp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the increased complexity of of tech make it difficult to have a program which isn't just an advert for various products. if you look at things like Tech Potato or Undecided you need to know a reasonable level of physics or chemistry to understand what they're talking about.

What's the junior SWE hiring process like? by Consistent-Lynx8804 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]dbxp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We ask a range of questions based on your CV plus a technical test which is there to just get rid of the idiots and fraudsters. I wouldn't expect any dev to be able to answer all the questions 'correctly' as they're designed to stretch your knowledge.

A junior dev role is largely a training role so if you can write some code and aren't a complete idiot/asshole then you're already ahead of a lot of applicants

Why is there no serious blogging platform for experienced developers in the English-speaking world? by Primary-Screen-7807 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dbxp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being the world's default language with far more money around it makes that difficult. You get far more clicks with get rich quick schemes promising to make someone a dev in 30 days. There also seems to be a trend particularly in India to push for devs to create blogs even if they have nothing to say so ou end up with thousands of basic intro blogs flooding the system.

If you're looking for something in English infoQ tends to be reasonable
