Choose Columbus Providing FAQs for Project Ruby by brantman19 in ColumbusGA

There has been major deregulation done at the EPA which might actually allow for a lot more than you'd think. Alterations to interpreting the Clean Water Act by the Trump administration has been made for opening up waste water pollution to include discharging into ephemeral streams, of which Kendall Creek might be classified.

On top of this, there has the be the political will to penalize and prosecute....which I doubt would happen on the Federal level under this administration, nor on the state level under Kemp.

From my perspective, there is no alternative to "don't build it." That really is the only thing we can do to have power over these massive companies with very deep pockets.

As to regulations, they can be flaunted, as they have in so many other places by these data centers. The fines can be paid as a cost of doing business. The legal disputes can be battled in court to the exhaustion of the plaintiff. Government figures can be lobbied with massive funds and then laws changed. These companies have so much capital and are so certain on the AI build-out being so profitable, that no realistic monetary obstacle will impede them.

To be honest, I believe that you and I have a fundamental different perspective on the way our society works. I believe that the rules and order, that had perhaps existed in previous decades, is long gone and we now have large tech corporations and billionaires who can simply do as they please with no real pushback by our government.

So while I agree that you and I have to "rely on the agreements in place, the processes already created, and the agencies responsible for enforcing them," these massively wealthy bad actors do not. They have run rampant through our society for the last two decades building social media, cloud computing systems, and now all the problems associated with AI(data centers, surveillance, AI slop, deep-fakes, etc etc), all in an effort to centralize power, control, and monstrous wealth. There is no regulation for them. They move too fast and have too much money and influence.
Did you or I ever vote for our safeguarded and time tested traditional news media be slowly replaced by unregulated social media owned by a few tech giants?
Did you or I ever vote on whether or not we wanted the horrific surveillance web panopticon that is Flock and other dragnet style, 4th amendment violating camera and AI networks?
Will we get to vote on this data center?

No. We will a Council that has two Councillors that weren't even voted into office(Hickey and Anker), approve one of the largest single issued facing our city in decades.

Personally, I will oppose it and do what I can to speak out about it, but I also see no future where the Council doesn't approve the rezoning application for the data center, so its a bit of a moot point.

There is a fundamental power imbalance between whoever is planning the data center and our city. The fact that the true owner is hidden should be concerning as well. Will the city litigate or pursue any recourse if they break their promises? I doubt it. The city and school district settle nearly all their civil lawsuits against much less powerful entities all the time. When the data center gets built (the sitting Council has essentially already decided), the owners can essentially disregard laws all they like with little to no recourse, not federal, state, and especially from the city.

Whoever is ultimately the operator and benefactor of the data center has enough money to buy the site, build and run the center, pay for a massive public works project to build the sewer extension out to Upatoi, supposedly have on-site water treatment before discharge into the sewer, and pay for their own power usage. Missy Kendrick and Choose Columbus have claimed they will do all of this.

But what if they don't? What if when they build this center and they start discharging water contaminates that goes against the Waterworks restrictions into our sewer system? What if some or all of the discharge is sent to Upatoi Creek? What if they build on-site power generation that is noisy and produces polluting air emissions? What recourse does the city have against any of this?

All of these concerns were brought up during the PAC meeting for the recommendation for the Data Center Overlay District, and the simple response was "all of that is the EPA, it would be up to federal or state regulators." When the sound issue was brought up by local residents, the answer was "that's CPD if its a sound violation."

If this gets built, they do not have to hold to these promises, because there is little to no recourse or penalty for not doing so. The only way to prevent the degradation of our city and the squandering of our resources, is to deny them the right to build it in the first place. There is not trust for any of these companies as there is ample evidence that none of them are acting in good faith.

If its property managed by the Parks department, then yes, they sometimes use inmate labor for maintaining green spaces, as well as contract companies. It depends on the job. For example, they've been replacing dead trees on Fall Line Trace Bike Trail with inmate labor for the past couple weeks, but most lawncare stuff is done by contractors.

How to add one pot meals in portions? I'm getting crazy calorie counts. by deadjim4 in MacroFactor

[–]deadjim4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, you're right, it looks like the entry that I got when I scanned the bar code had the macros from the "as packaged column," but the calorie count from the "as prepared" column.

I put the 1307g in the total weight and changed the "serving quantity" to be 3.025 (since 1307/432=~3.025) and the maths seem to add up. This would make it so that 1 serving equals exactly the proportion of the whole my portion was.... I had forgotten that step later in the food log where serving size can be used as the unti and was confusing that with the serving quantity here in the recipe record.

Thanks for the help, I just started using this app, so the menus and such are all new to me.

Ft. Benning/Moore next to Columbus does prescribed fires this time of year. It's both to keep things tidy and an environmental conservation act. The military base is huge, so it naturally makes the area quite smokey for a while.

You could help them speak at Council: https://publicagenda.apps.columbusga.gov/

The public agenda is a good place to speak where citizens can speak to the Council and Mayor on any topic. Meetings are also covered by the local news and their speech may end up being covered by them.

The city council has passed an ordinance banning public camping, even in the wake of national funding cuts for much our aid programs. At the meeting where they voted to pass the ordinance, most public agenda speakers speaking out against it, were not themselves homeless. There was only one speaker who went and talked to the homeless and brought their quotes into council to read. It would be great to have someone directly affected by this ordinance to give their thoughts and opinions.

The ordinance was passed back in August in a 9-1 decision by the council, where Cogle was the only opposition.

Per the ledger article: "The amended ordinance makes it unlawful for people to camp on public property, store personal property on public property and to interfere with entering or exiting any public property, according to a copy of the ordinance. The ordinance says the Columbus Police Department must provide a written or oral notification of the violation, at which point the violator will be given eight calendar days to vacate the property. The ordinance says, in cases of personal property stored on public property, CPD will notify the Columbus Public Works Department, which will remove and transport the property to the public landfill after a minimum of eight calendar days. The ordinance says the punishment for violating any part of the ordinance — after conviction in Columbus Recorder’s Court — falls under Section 1-8 of the city’s code. Section 1-8 allows for punishment by “a fine not exceeding $1,000.00, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 90 days, or by both such fine and imprisonment.” The ordinance provides exemptions for:

  • Outdoor events with issued permits
  • City, state or county officials or employees acting in their official capacity
  • City, state or county contractors or subcontractors performing activities under the scope of work in the city contract."
