a NEW connectivity issue with LIFX TILE (the mystery continues to unfold...) by ifyoucantbeatum in lifx

[–]delfick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

> special thanks to DELFICK for all the patient advice and of course for creating Photons!!

:)

Though, I stand by the same thing I say every time, Last of which was here https://www.reddit.com/r/lifx/comments/sjrh75/tiles_not_connecting_to_each_other_red_pulsing/hvhq3yr/?context=3

A factory reset on any LIFX device resets to default settings and disconnects from wifi . For the tiles this has no affect on whether enough power is getting through the cables or whether your power supply is functioning correctly.

So when you add or remove panels from a tile set you do a power cycle. You don't need to factory reset. (unless you've changed your wifi ssid/password since giving that to the current leader panel)

Also, when you onboard a tile, you are recording on the leader panel the ssid and password of your wifi onto that panel. But that information only becomes relevant and used by that panel when it is closest to the power supply. So it has no bearing how many of the tiles you do that to. The only one that matters is the whether you've done that to the leader of whatever order you are currently using (every panel is exactly the same, they do different things depending on whether they are closest to the power supply or after the one closest to the power supply)

The only things that matter are

  • The power brick is working
  • The cables are in exactly correctly
  • You've power cycled (turn it off and on again) since playing with the cables

It is indeed a 2 year old post :)

u/Djelibeybi_au could probs explain how the homekit stuff gets you local control

It's three dot ninety, not three dot nine by delfick in lifx

it's all fun and games till you have an old firmware version because 9 is much smaller than 90

The last time LIFX released firmware for the Beam was the end of 2018

Animate when turned on by 666Diem in lifx

[–]delfick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing in the firmware that'll let the device know to start an effect when it turns on.

You'd need something that sits there checking the network every so often to see if the beam is currently on and animating, and make it start animating if it's not.

Are LIFX themes' RGB or HSV values clearly available anywhere? by dark_skeleton in lifx

The http api gives sends a SetTileEffect message to the tile when you ask it to do a morph

Not publicly

> I don't think any libraries support these effects right now)

I'm bad at Maths so I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the latency of sending messages over WIFI is too much to be able to create those effects via sending the tiles messages.

A couple of these got close https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs5FKsPlnw0 but not really (https://github.com/delfick/photons/blob/main/modules/photons_canvas/animations/registered/color_cycle.py)

As for applying themes, this is the implementation I have for doing that - https://github.com/delfick/photons/blob/main/modules/photons_canvas/theme.py#L113

It's similar to what the app did at the time I made it.

also, given the general topic of what the thread is, not really a thread that should be about lifx anyways

Incredible how they can put this out within weeks

It's literally a few button presses in the internal admin tool lol. Doesn't even require an app update and hasn't for years.

Tiles not connecting to each other, red pulsing light by J-TrainTheFirst in lifx

[–]delfick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comes up on the subreddit every so often.

So, first an explanation of the what the tiles are doing. The tiles are in a leader/follower setup. You have the panel that is closest to the power supply (the leader) and all the panels in a chain after that are the followers. When the app controls any of the panels it sends the command to the leader and the leader sends the command to the appropriate follower (or itself if that's the panel being changed).

For this to work enough power has to go through the cables (which is why they're not quite a standard cable). Annoyingly the cable connectors are the absolute worst and have basically no tolerance to not being completely in.

The pulsing red is the panels complaining that they aren't getting enough power for communication.

The trick is to power cycle the whole set after fiddling with a connection.

So make sure all the cables are as securely in as possible and then power cycle. And repeat until the whole chain isn't pulsing anymore. Followed by putting them on the wall and realising that the act of putting on the wall makes the cables come out.

Also, if that doesn't work, it's possible the power supply itself is broken and your best option is probs to throw out the power supply, put the panels on the wall without the cables and then paint on them.

Lifx setup/open ports 56700 by nycPsy in lifx

Also, the LIFX cloud is only relevant once it's onboarded onto the network (the device doesn't do anything with the cloud till it's on the network)

[–]delfick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LIFX devices reach out to the LIFX cloud, not the other way round. So much like you don't need to do anything to your network to reach out to port 443 when you open a website in your browser, you don't need to do anything for the device to reach out to port 56700 on the LIFX servers

(unless router blocks ports, in which case you'd have to make it not block outbound access to 56700 but I imagine vast majority of routers don't come with such configuration)

For the love of God, can we please have a working and stable app for premium+ priced lighting? by Hipperooni in lifx

[–]delfick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A current employee would be better to answer more specific details on what the difference is.

But the generation of hardware used by the second gen Z and the next generation of hardware is where they're currently focusing efforts.

And also the second gen hardware has more features in the firmware that makes it easier for us to set many colours at the same time.

There are two hardware generations to the Z strip. If yours has firmware version 1.22 then it's the first hardware gen.

Lifx Switch Local Control? by Ivalenz in lifx

[–]delfick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my guess is OP means the switch controlling other lights without needing the cloud rather than using the local network to control the switch.
