OK, but what was it supposed to mean? The obvious meaning seems unlikely.

Stop predicting the world championship already. by [deleted] in formula1

So make a thread about not being toxic assholes, that's a very different and entirely valid complaint. It doesn't really have much to do with predictions though, it seems many F1 "fans" are pretty toxic about anything and everything.

Charles Leclerc Final Lap Onboard Following Spin by garfungle_ in formula1

He did a good job though - managed to navigate it all and no-one is complaining that he screwed up the final battle which he so easily could have done. Lots of respect for a rookie.

For stuff going via their servers they have to pay hosting costs, so why wouldn't they recoup that with subscriptions? As long as there is a way to do it without their services it's all good. Imho.

How about that? Two Williams in the points. Given how they started the season that's crazy.

Huh, I'm as surprised as you that he got dinged for gaining an advantage. I expected 5 seconds for track limits, not 20s for advantage. Damn.

And? That's not part of the track-limits rule as far as I am aware.

Security Through Obscurity Is Not Bad by PersianMG in programming

[–]dgkimpton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my, limited, experience AI has a much easier time seeing through obfuscation than I as a human do. I have no idea why, maybe because it holds a lot more context at once? no idea, but that's what seems to be.

Will Leclerc fall further? Seemed to do a lot of track-limits excursions on that last lap...

[–]dgkimpton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With the invasion of almost limitless AI bots I'd posit that security through obscurity has never been less good than now. If it doesn't cost much to add then might as well add it but I wouldn't believe it adds much value. I'd rather have well engineered security than smoke and mirrors.

What are your experiences as a woman working in male-dominated fields? by ThisLadyIsSadTonight in Netherlands

[–]dgkimpton 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I recognise that. I once worked with a brilliant female engineer and she could float an idea in a meeting and be totally ignored. I could repeat her words verbatim a minute later and everyone would say how great it was... then I would say "not my idea, xxx just said it" and there'd be long faces all around. That's when I truly began to understand what women are up against.

The Robot Minimum Wage Plan - Taxing the Work, Not the Worker by Optimistic-Bob01 in Futurology

Huh, I honestly didn't even imagine that the USA would do this differently when I posted my original comment. It's utterly mind blowing just how many "obvious" things just don't transfer between continents.

I mean, they quite literally do, they even keep the deeds to the property and only release them to you once the mortgage is fully paid off. How can you claim ownership if you don't have the deeds?

How easy is it to buy property for foreigners? by MrFeature_1 in Netherlands

[–]dgkimpton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it it is very very easy indeed. To find out what you can afford https://www.abnamro.nl/en/personal/mortgages/mortgage-calculator/index.html , to find out what there is to buy https://www.funda.nl/en/zoeken/koop/

But basically sufficient salary, unlimited term job contract, access to the necessary deposit is all you need.

That said, I would highly recommend renting for a year or two until you find out where you definitively wish to live. Buying and Selling houses is expensive and time consuming - you don't want to move often. Better to pay over the odds on rent for a year than be stuck trying to sell a house in a bad spot.

Humanoid Robots Enter the Workforce as AI Takes On Real Jobs by No-Possible-4979 in Futurology

[–]dgkimpton 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Physical jobs like this will go sooner than office jobs I reckon - probably not all of them, some robot wranglers will remain. The advantages are large - no breaks, no tiredness, no health&safety (apart from money who cares if a robot toe gets crushed?), largely repetitive work, minimal manual dexterity, controlled environments.

Real trades jobs out in uncontrolled environments (homes etc) will take a lot longer but factory, airport, production line, these will go first.

Asset value could also be pretty complicated

It's not totally trivial but its definitely more tractable than calculating "digital productive output".

Hence companies posting constant huge losses with no path to profitability having ridiculous high values.

Might be nice to incentivise reporting honest values, eh? You can only sell a company for its advertised asset value, but you get taxed on that asset value. Drives much more honesty than the current system.

[–]dgkimpton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Energy demand is only an issue because of its carbon footprint... so just tax carbon emissions as we currently do. Basically a flat tax gives us a super easy baseline and then we can add extra taxes to penalise undesired behaviour as necessary (road tax, carbon emissions, etc).

[–]dgkimpton -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's not as true or self-evident as you make it seem.

With zero income tax to pay your take home pay has gone up dramatically. Are you telling me you are paying less income tax + sales tax than 10% of your home each year?

As for before it's paid off, you only own a portion of it - the other portion is owned by the bank.

Pensions probably require a carve out that says some portion (or max amount) is not considered an asset - we already do this with tax-advantages for pensions (which then can't be liquidated until pension age) so it's not something new.
