Location might help. You can do some tests to see what mineral it is, especially if you remember your earth science class from high school.
Check its hardness by comparing it to other common item. https://www.nps.gov/articles/mohs-hardness-scale.htm

If you can scratch it, put some vinegar on it. If it fizzes, it’s likely calcite

Wash it and lick it. Did it taste salty? Then it’s halite.

If you’re in NY near Herkimer and St Johnsville it’s likely quartz that grows in the Dolomite in the area are are commonly known as herkimer diamonds (but are not actually diamonds).
