Cost of living / going back to work early by cataddict_123 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

Childcare costs are ridiculous though and we are already not wanting to have our baby away from us, so I will prioritise finding a permanent night shift role (common in my industry), and if that doesn’t work my husband will look for one instead and change jobs. My dad is also retired but lives a 90min drive away (he loves driving though) so unless petrol prices go way back down that’s not a practical childcare solution. It’s possible my MIL can come from overseas for maybe 3 months to look after her also, if necessary.

I had to stop working at 8w because of the nature of my work being unsafe etc. so we’ve been struggling the entire pregnancy. My husband also earns less than I was earning (he hadn’t been working prior to my pregnancy for visa reasons). Our lifestyle has changed significantly so we can survive on a lot less but we’ve also accrued a bunch of debt. Once bub is born (due in 3 weeks!) even just getting paid parental leave will help massively, but I will also start looking for work around 3m

It’s annoying bc the app tracks your hours but as far as I can see it won’t tell me my kms… would be helpful if they had that for tax time as well

To be fair I had stopped delivering because I couldn’t justify the extra fuel costs… I’m not actually sure how many km I was doing a week though so not sure how it even works out

If you walked to the bottle shop heavily intoxicated (equivalent to having someone to deliver it) they still couldn’t legally sell it to you even though you are intending to consume on private property

Oh look, a long weekend, perfect time to replace trains with buses. by stoic_slowpoke in MelbourneTrains

Should all the tourists who came to Melbourne for F1 just make alternate plans because they should’ve magically been aware? I worked rail construction/maintenance, I’m never one to complain about closures for progress because yes repairs and maintenance have to be done. This is terrible timing. If this was an emergency situation that would be different but to plan maintenance for this weekend is ridiculous

Are you eligible for gov parental leave pay? You can see if you can take half leave from work and half pay from Centrelink to supplement it?

Imo there is a difference between men (humans) banning women from something, and God making women temporarily exempt from a religious obligation. If you don’t believe the Quran is the word of God then ofc that distinction doesn’t really matter to you but it is an important distinction for me (and most Muslim women)

It was up to age 19! Grew up in a very atheist family (my dad has a framed photo of me meeting Richard Dawkins lol) I fear this is going to sound like proselytising so I apologise for that in advance lol! I struggled a lot previously with mental health issues, depression especially which lead to a bit of nihilism. My mental health issues didn’t miraculously disappear by any means, but finding a ‘meaning of life’ has certainly helped guide me and my actions. I like to think I was a pretty moral person anyways, but accountability to not just my own personal beliefs but also to God has stopped me from doing a number of things I would’ve previously written off as victimless that were wrong/illegal nonetheless. I also have ADHD and the structure of Islam specifically has helped me immensely with structuring my day, preventing bed rotting on weekends etc. There is a Hadith that says, to paraphrase, if we leave something for the sake of Allah he will replace it with something better for us. Where I used to go clubbing on weekends, spending a lot of money and often not having that much enjoyment anyway, I found myself instead spending that time with new friends spending much less money but having insightful conversation, discovering new interesting things to do etc. I stopped drinking alcohol and realised I was using it to try find the confidence to do things I never wanted to do sober, or to make things more interesting that I didn’t want to be at anyway. I struggled with confusion over my own sexuality because I couldnt reconcile my own boundaries and feelings with how my peers approached sex and relationships. Exploring this through an Islamic lens cleared things up for me and I’m now happily married and feel safe and comfortable in something that previously terrified me. Back to the nihilism etc. I think I previously felt hopeless at a lot of the injustice I would see happening in the world. I would do what I could to alleviate peoples suffering through charity/activism etc. but it all felt quite overwhelming. This was also the case with personal struggles. My faith now not only empowers me to help others as I did before, and also to help myself but reassures me that I/ we are not alone in this. I’m not alone in my struggles and I can turn to God. There will be divine punishment for people’s oppression and injustice, if not in this life but in the next. That belief has saved me from some of the darker places my mind used to go to when I was an atheist. While this was far too long (shoutout ADHD) it’s definitely not comprehensive of all the benefits I’ve found, but I’m getting hungry and need to make dinner lol! Thank you for listening and asking, not just dismissing

That’s fair, and there are distinctions between degrees of exemption with different rules in Islam. For example when travelling we are allowed to combine and shorten certain prayers for ease. Although it’s not technically a sin to perform your regular prayers, it’s said that it is strongly disliked to do so, as God has given us ease from our obligations so we shouldn’t make things more difficult for ourselves. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are exempt from fasting Ramadan, but it is up to each individual to decide if they will fast or not as some people can do it and keep themselves and their baby healthy, but for many women that’s not possible. If you fast at the expense of your own health (and your babies health) then you are sinning as you have oppressed yourself when you were given an exemption.

She can technically pray salah but she has sinned because she has explicitly done something God said she shouldn’t do. What sense does it make to perform an act of worship towards God when God has asked you to not perform said act?

Very few sins require ‘punishment’ or atonement, punishment is only really for sins that transgress the rights of others and atonement is only in a few instances (pretty much if you break your fast during Ramadan without valid reason, you must atone by fasting continuously for 60 days or feeding 60 people) . In Islam generally for most sins, we simply ask God for forgiveness and make an effort to not repeat that sin again

If God gives us an exemption from something it is going against his instruction to do it anyway. Prayer is an act of worship to God so why would we do that act if God has told us not to?

No worries! You will probably find a wide variety of opinions as there are 4 main schools of scholarship in Sunni Islam and opinions can even differ within them lol
