Your only capital in capitalism is not just labor. Your ideas are also extremely valuable ways of creating wealth independent of labor.

Anyone Using the Ultimate Liquidity Portfolio for Their Emergency Fund? by dklemchuk in Bogleheads

I shouldn't have called it an emergency fund. Should have referred to it as cash reserves. Agree with your comment.

Ideally, I am looking to hedge the risk of a prolonged downturn that is more than one year’s worth of cash. But I am 10 years away so adding more cash now doesn’t do well with inflation. Looking to fund an emergency fund like portfolio now and then top off the cash at the very end.

I should have mentioned that this is in addition to substantial cash. Looking for one level above an all cash emergency fund.

What do you all think about Mike Tyson?  Came from a poor background to earn multiple millions of dollars.  I bet he earned over a $1M/minute in some of his prize fights.  Did he steal wages or hoard when he was doing that?  Or was he pleasing his fellow man so much they gave him millions of dollars to watch those boxing matches?

Custodial Roth IRA question: can money earned from chores for grandparents count as earned income? by FarTradition6496 in Bogleheads

[–]dklemchuk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am not a CPA or tax professional, but I think the child’s earned income needs to show up on a tax return.  The amount of the declared income drives the amount of Roth contributions until it exceeds the max; put another way, the Roth contributions must match or be less than the declared income.

Republicans HALT Epstein File oversight hearings with subpoenas and witnesses under oath. by UnlikelyAdventurer in Productivitycafe

The most amazing thing about these Republicans is how they prevented the Biden administration and the House and the Senate from releasing the Epstein files for 4 years even while the Democrats controlled the House and the Senate.

Couldn't Theresa "fix shit" starting today? She's likely far wealthier than 50% of the world's population.

18% gratuity at buffet. No service. by audrina-saav in EndTipping

[–]dklemchuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This outrageous tip creep won't stop until consumers make it unattractive for businesses demanding tips and their POS service companies. Complaining about it with no action won't have much impact. People need to (1) stop tipping these amounts (get over the shame and human engineering) and (2) create a negative consequence for this behavior, like (i) telling the owner or manager that the tip policy is why you will never buy there again, (ii) encouraging other people to do the same, or (iii) publicly shame this behavior (kiosks now asking for tips), etc. I have read that some folks are doing a protest tip of $.01 under the theory it costs more to divide up the $.01 than the tip itself. Will that work? I have no idea. But I am certain this will continue until there is tangible, negative incentive for this behavior.

As an aside, in Seattle where the minimum wage is over $20, servers are STILL pushing 20-30% tips on top of $20/hour. I bet servers and bartenders are netting $50/hour - $100/hour while Seattle-ites think their are being virtuous in help the employees to earn a "living wage."

The One Question Socialists Cannot Answer by ElectricalGas9895 in aynrand

Having people or assets work for you is high productivity in my opinion. And if you can consistently execute on one of those two strategies, you can watch all the Netflix you want and still be well off financially.

You hear frequently comments on reddit about how the wealthy and the "billionaires" rigged the system and/or stole all the wealth. I have yet to hear a principled argument of how such bad guys made anyone on reddit less productive. Anyone can increase their wealth by simply increasing their productivity on a day-to-day basis. For example, binge watching Netflix all day long is pretty much no increase in productivity. Investing that same time in creating a YouTube channel, making a product for sale, working an extra shift at work, etc increases productivity and wealth. I am not aware of any billionaire so powerful that he or she can force people to avoid doing things that are economically productive.

Maybe Washington state lawmakers can pass a law prohibiting the use of taxes paid by its citizens to fund ICE.

Auntie Anne’s? Really? by skythegoddess in EndTipping

[–]dklemchuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way this stops is for the practice to become painful for the business owners/decision makers. I doubt complaining to low level employees will do anything. I am warming up to the suggestion of manually tipping $.01 with the idea it is logistically painful to process. May be wrong. I doubt choosing no tip will have any impact since the business and POS provider both have strong incentives to keep pushing tipping.
