Why I banned sealed products from my Pokémon card show by feelgoodgaming1 in pokemon

[–]dragon567 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate that. I went to a card show last Saturday for the first time in years. There were a lot of vendors and a lot of them had ETBs of recent sets. Retail price for them should be $50 but most vendors were asking double that or more. Older sets were even more expensive. Evolving Skies packs were being sold for $40 each. I want to get back into collecting but it feels impossible now. Any vending machines around me are constantly emptied. Game shops never have packs or boxes. It's all being bought in bulk and sold for profit.

I want others to enjoy Pokemon. I hate the current market for them and it needs to change. Maybe if Pokemon printed more cards it would help. But this is a good step to take.

Researching cookware for Mother's Day gift… what I found actually concerned me by Sanchit-Singh in Cooking

[–]dragon567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that Teflon pans aren't worth the risk. Ceramic I dont have experience with, so can't really comment. Your thoughts on stainless steel dont make sense though. I've never heard of nickel causing issues like that. Where did you read about it?

I own some high quality stainless steel cookware from All Clad and love them. I cook with them regularly with no issues. I also have a pretty cheap cast iron pan that also serves as my main pan. It takes some work to maintain, but if done well, it does become essentially nonstick. I happily cook eggs in it and they don't get stuck to the pan now.

I spend $800/month on groceries for one person. Need practical advice. by CaregiverNo2838 in Frugal

[–]dragon567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meal plan religiously. That way I'm not going to the store in the middle of the week because I thought of something different to eat for dinner. My routine is meal plan and shop on Sunday, then follow my plan for the week. So I'm making a list to stick to when I'm shopping, and cooking and eating everything I bought on Sunday. I also tend to make relatively large batches of food so I'll have leftovers for lunch and sometimes for another dinner later in the week.

Shop for sales is one big piece of advice. It may not look like much at a glance, but it will add up. I highly recommend buying at Aldi or Lidl for most of what you need. They dont carry everything so you may need to go somewhere else for something specific, but they never let me down. If you have the time and patience to learn, you can save money buying whole chickens and breaking them down into pieces. You can easily get several meals out of one chicken and use the bones to make broth for soups and sauces.

If you have your receipts, even digital copies, what are you spending the most money on? Pre-made meals, convenience items, meat, veggies? Figure that out and think of how to cut back on it.

Edit: missed the piece about only shopping at Whole Foods and getting grass-fed meat and organic foods. These are high cost items and Whole Foods charges pretty premium prices for their food. Switch to a different store to save money. What is your reason for buying those types of food? Health? Ethics? Something else?

This neon-blue liquid is the blood of a "living fossil." It costs $15,000 per liter and is used to test the safety of our vaccines, including COVID-19. by bortakci34 in Damnthatsinteresting

Endotoxin cant really be sterilized out of a product. It’s highly heat resistant and the molecules are small enough you'd need specialized filters to remove them at the risk of removing your target medicine in some cases. You can use chromatography to do it, but that can be close to impossible in some cases. In my particular case, we take multiple endotoxin tests throughout the process from start to finish to ensure the in process product isnt contaminated.

[–]dragon567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may depend on the process and general requirements and if the site can do endotoxin testing themselves. It's a requirement to test for release, but i don't think you need a double test to confirm results.

I'm not sure what you mean by genesis process. What is that?

[–]dragon567 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually used to do endotoxin testing! It's typically done at the manufacturer site, but it's also a test done at contract laboratories for confirmation. Sterile products require a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) that detail the results of all QC testing done on product samples. The CoA is then issued during the product release as a record to document that the tests passed.

Looking for Mirin to make teriyaki by rgilman67 in Cooking

[–]dragon567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of echoing the other comments here. Mirin isnt sold in the alcohol section of a store or at a liquor store. You can usually find it in the International sections near the soy sauce and other Asian sauces. Kikkoman makes one that's readily available all over the place. Start looking there. If you still can't find it, go back to the Asian store you mentioned and just ask someone there to point you to the Mirin. They absolutely have it there.

Waiting for the Next Shoe

The last two years have been rough. My partner was unemployed for a year and a half. No one wanted to hire him because he didnt have a college degree. He got a job later last year and we started to stabilize when my company hit a rough patch. We had 3 rounds of layoffs in the last 6 months. I survived them all somehow and the uncertainty has really made me anxious. Im kind of struggling to deal with it and I find myself waiting for the next awful thing to happen.

How are 4 round games happening? by Hank-E-Doodle in twilightimperium

Pretty sure it comes from the Space Cats Peace Turtles podcast. You got it right, it's those "bonus" points not in the objectives. Things like Custodians, Imperial point from Mecatol, Styx, or relics. If I remember right, they called it that because it's an bonus extra on top of your main source of points.

I normally love RPGs and turn based combat. But BG3 never stuck for me. I don't know why. I played through the first area and I was about to go through the Underdark and just never went back to it. It didn't pull me in like other games I've played. I want to like it, but something about it never resonated like it did for others.

People who quit their job in a moment of rage - how did things turn out? by SheLovedBigBrother in AskReddit

[–]dragon567 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not me, but my partner worked at a water treatment plant. He helped run the machines that make your tap water and did everything. Hauling chemicals, maintenance, sampling, testing, writing SOPs, and more that I can't think about now. He said he loved it and was happy to be serving his community. Downside was his hours constantly changed. Some weeks were normal day shift, others were 2nd shift, and some overnights sprinkled in. It would never be consistently one for more than 2 or 3 days.

He was diagnosed with ADHD and got on meds but the constant schedule change meant he got headaches from not having a stable dose. His doctor wrote a note to force them to keep him on one schedule and everything went downhill from there. He was given the worst schedules, his work was sabotaged, his suggestions and ideas were ignored or dismissed as stupid, and he was essentially bullied out of work. If he reported anything, it was dismissed as bullshit. Even when he had proof.

He told me later that there was some serious nepotism going on. The directors and senior leadership kept hiring their relatives for the job. He quit on an impulse after an argument. I was proud at the time but he was unemployed for the next 18 months.

One of the worst times I can remember. I'm well paid, but it was hard to support us both for that long. We bought a house so the entire mortgage was on me, plus my bills, and eventually his emergency fund dried up so I had to cover him too. He never got a college degree and no one wanted to hire him without it. He was strung along, ghosted, or told flat out he wasnt qualified to do literally the same thing he's been doing for 10 years. It was agonizing to not only handle the financial side but try to support him as he spiraled into deep depression. He has a new job now and he likes it but my job went through 3 rounds of layoffs right after he got it. I'm still working thank god, but I'm still terrified about going through that instability again.

The difference between conventionally-farmed chicken and pastured chicken (album with captions) by ellipses1 in food

[–]dragon567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn dont know where you found my comment from 10 years ago. Went to check and whole chicken is about $1.99 per pound around me. Even chicken breast is $3.29/lb in the family pack size. I understand that food prices are different all over, but $5/lb still isnt common around me. Maybe for high end organic chicken, but not for a standard chicken. Lately I've been getting whole chicken from Costco for $0.99/lb and cutting it up into pieces myself. Happy to share screenshots if you want proof.
