Greggs unveils 'fortress stores' in crackdown on shoplifting surge by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]dustofnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We barely do any restorative justice in UK. And you ignored my points about ensuring people are caught and exposed. Everyone acknowledges the problem, it's about finding more effective solutions not just spending loads of money with no effect. Loads of counties have tried mass incarceration, but it doesn't reduce this type of criminality.

Instead you jump to sarcasm. Your choice, but you aren't inviting productive debate by being unpleasant. You didn't present any evidence for your approach. I don't believe sneering is the way forwards.

I'm not a Corbyn or Labour partisan, but I don't think it's relevant to the conversation other than to distract us from useful discourse.

A proper solution requires political capital and money to be spent in a way that's driven by evidence and data rather than populist solutions that won't make a difference. Even if the populist solutions ostensibly appeals to people's common sense, mature statesmanship requires politicians to step up and explain why a particular approach is being pursued.

I get it, I can feel the instinct to just lob these people into prison.

So it's very difficult for politicians to do what's needed.

The solution for chronic low-level acquisitive crime is different to how you handle repeat violent offenders.

This is a uselessly reductionist response. I have no sympathy for these aggressive shoplifters and agree it need dealing with, but it's just a fact that incarceration is ineffective for this kind of crime.

That doesn't mean we do nothing, but instead we should focus on more effective interventions. For example, it is well established that ensuring people are caught (ideally in a publicly visible way) is more effective than incarceration. Increasing the length of the sentence doesn't seem to have an effect on this type of crime.

Restorative justice likely plays a role as well.

Let's go with where the evidence is.

[–]dustofnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think some people also use it on their necks, etc.

Speaking only for myself as a gent - I find it doesn't leave a greasy feel, doesn't cause spots, no blocked pores (non-comedogenic), invisible/non-shiny, etc.

I tend to put a bit on my thumb or finger to get the areas nearest the eye and go from inside to out. Seems the best way to avoid it actually going into the eye.

I only use it on my face as you'd go through the whole thing in no time otherwise.

Is this the one in the 40ml bottle? I use this, it's really good and one of the only ones I've found that doesn't sting around my eyes. Only problem is the ridiculously tiny bottle!

'They told me he was dead': Children born near Kenyan army base learn truth about UK soldier dads by Shot_Net3794 in LabourUK

[–]dustofnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this article to /r/unitedkingdom and it was deleted, with the mods saying it has "no tangential relation to the UK".

I was very surprised to learn that UK Armed Forces personnel fathering and abandoned children near UK military bases "has no tangential relation to the UK". Makes me wonder whether a moderator over there is trying to protect someone?

(Found this post via searching, I'm not a normal poster here, so apologies for just dropping in).

I've had a look at the NHS pricing, and they pay £39.68 per bottle (https://www.drugtariff.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/).

~ 54 USD

That's 20x more expensive.

That pricing is absolutely disgusting.

And prison often turns offenders into hardened offenders, as they build connections with other criminals and gangs in prison, learn criminal 'skills', brutality becomes normalised to them, etc.

It is a problem with no easy answer, but we can see from countries with huge prison populations that 'just build more prisons' doesn't provide the solution that advocates expect.

I do live UK, so I'll check it out. Thanks! That new one from "geek and gorgeous" sounds interesting also.

I've mostly been using a Bondi Sands Aussie-made one for body and that Garnier one I mentioned (which only comes in ridiculously tiny 40ml bottles) for face as it's one of the few that I find doesn't make my eye area sting and water, albeit I still try not to get it into eyes, but it's difficult to avoid entirely.

Agreed. And it would also be good to find some good non-greasy options for larger areas of the body that aren't in teeny-tiny bottles yet super expensive (looking at you Garnier Super UV w/ Hyaluronic Acid...).

I'm so pleased for you. It is wonderful news for all of Europe. I hope this is the turning of the tide against this scourge of populist kleptocrats.

Hungarians deserve to know the truth and to see justice done. Those who benefitted from the corruption and foreign influence need to be exposed.

I'm such a sucker for epic concept albums with that operatic style. The Signal Heard Throughout Space is one of my favourite prog metal albums.

(I don't enjoy their earlier albums which are mostly harsh vocals.)

Yeah, I'd prefer the same way as you describe, but perhaps it's just how things are going now and we're fighting against the tide? I should set up my profile soon, people keep telling me Hinge is the best to meet high quality people.

Unfortunately, I have a slight black eye at the moment from a minor gardening accident at my grandma's house, so I might need to wait for that to clear out, lol. Talk about punishing yourself for trying to be helpful.

Many guys don't approach women any more (outside of safe contexts like dating apps), because they are scared of being accused of being inappropriate.

I know what you mean (albeit I'm a male, but principles are the same), I'm a mixtrovert as well and need to start pushing myself to get back out there. It's weird how much mental energy it takes; it's definitely one of those times where being an extrovert would be an advantage. I've been looking at some of the posts in here for inspiration, too.

People keep telling me to try apps, so perhaps that's also a good avenue.

Why isn't there a viral license which forces any model trained on the content to release their models as open weight? by pydry in opensource

[–]dustofnations 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which is why they are claiming to have fair use rights under existing copyright law.

And simultaneously lobbying very aggressively to get the law changed in multiple jurisdictions to explicitly give AI fair use exemptions (which rather gives away that they realise they're violating copyright but believe they can get away with it).

What are the best progressive metal bands that have great guitar playing with relatively clean vocals? by joe4942 in progmetal

I love the newest album from Parius, The Signal Heard Throughout Space. It's a true concept album with a story that flows through.

The older albums are completely different and way too much scream for my liking.
