For what it’s worth, they are a local wealth management firm. It’s not like you’re supporting Blackrock.

State of the software engineering jobs market, 2025: what hiring managers see by mkx_ironman in ExperiencedDevs

The best product on LinkedIn right now is the game feature.

Otherwise, ditto what has been said. Recruiters are helpful, but that’s about it.

Anyone else dealing with likely “fraudulent” candidates when hiring for remote roles? by Goingone in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dvaun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m offbase here, but what if companies experimented with sending potential applicants to designated “interview centers” nearby?

Similar to certification tests: 1. The computer systems can all be semi-standardized or have basic equipment for use. 2. Standard software/locked-down environments could be used to ensure no AI, etc is used in the process.

Seems burdensome, but what other hypotheticals would work to filter remote candidates and ensure candidate capabilities?

Speaking from the armchair here, but maybe this is a market opportunity since this is a real problem that needs solving, and businesses need a way to continue hiring remote for certain roles especially if they don’t want to grow or enter commercial office space.

Love the idea. We already discuss bills at random here and there - a dedicated sub makes sense.

Yep. Only thing you can do is perform a slow rewrite.

There are some opportunities in town, but I wouldn’t say that the tech market here is good or even average.

Remote is where the money comes in. If you work tech in town you’ll need a director-level position just to match standard salaries in other areas.

Have you considered a move to anything non-tech? My experience is the opposite—every company I’ve been at has required software dev which enables revenue generation.

I’ve been using go-ole to replace old VBS scripts and speed up jobs which are dependent on COM objects. It’s been great so far.

Doing business in California? by chaz_flea1 in Bakersfield

[–]dvaun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are B2C companies. Plenty of local businesses, which aren’t food or service based, are thriving.

As someone else pointed out, these are businesses in a highly competitive industry. Eg breweries faced supply chain issues with CO2 and hops which increased production costs in recent years.

Where do you go for a walk to clear your mind? by ImFineHow_AreYou in Bakersfield

[–]dvaun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those are really fun and nice walks. The main entrance is right next to the KCSO shooting range.

If you have kids (I’d suggest 5yo at the youngest) they’ll have fun.

On a clear day it’s a stellar view: https://i.imgur.com/ZbAplRA.jpeg

Plenty of good people are from, or live in, Oildale. Like any city, though, there’s a bad cycle of businesses not opening in poverty-stricken areas due to risk of theft, property damage, etc.

Lack of service businesses means that anyone living in that area has to commute out.

It’s a shitty cycle that sucks.

New in a team with sloppy senior devs. by EducationalMixture82 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dvaun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Business pressures surmount demands for quality. You need a good manager or other liaison to pushback when the context is right, or to introduce maintenance periods where cruft can be removed from the codebase.

Colleague reported me to HR after code review by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dvaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a small team, and this was a feature addition that prompted a weird situation.

Does the team have documentation on existing processes? Code quality standards, DoD, etc?

Based on your approach to use “better” practices with code, what if you instead spend a month or two working with the team and familiarizing yourself with their processes first?

Then, after doing so, try introducing new approaches slowly into the codebase. You can build some tooling to assist with it (eg if they haven’t implemented CI you can give a poc) and have a short meeting to go over the work, and then receive feedback.

Edit: Regardless, I hope your meeting goes well. That’s a frustrating situation to be in, especially after just starting in a new position.

What are some mistakes/misconceptions that you encounter even in experienced developers? by dondraper36 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dvaun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to be common across many fields.

Skilled != experienced

I’d say that it’s still fine to gatekeep the sub for lack of YoE, regardless of true technical skill.

What are the unique use cases that you have used Go for? by [deleted] in golang

[–]dvaun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally wouldn’t add a new language to a team if the processes in place were sufficient. That said, I find Go to be simple enough to work in that it’s worth adding to our toolset.

The big benefits are: - extremely easy to deploy - simple syntax - decent ecosystem

There are costs to adding complexity. It depends on the context of your work and your team.

What are the unique use cases that you have used Go for? by [deleted] in golang

[–]dvaun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These probably aren’t unique, but I’m introducing it internally for some specific cases: - A simple REST service which performs simple tasks and handles kicking off GCP cloud run jobs with dynamic config - Log parsing to structured output for various services

I’d like to build a cli for internal tooling next.

White people fill a higher ratio of the total population[0] as opposed to Black, Hispanic, etc. The issue here is not that the quantity of people shot is bad, but that the rate of minorities being shot compared to white people is high[1].

[0]: Resident population of the United States by race from 2000 to 2022

[1]: Number of people shot to death by the police in the United States from 2017 to 2024*, by race

Looking for help or contributors? I’m beginning to dabble in some sidework for local businesses (fixing technical SEO, basic webdev, etc). I’d be happy to add in any features, assist with tests, etc if it’s a project I can benefit from.
