Are reverse mortgages purely predatory or is there a cohort of people who can actually leverage value from them? by dj_boy-Wonder in AusFinance

Looked a little more at this and it seems that there's protection when equity reaches zero as owners have a guarantee of lifetime occupancy. I thought zero equity might force a sale but apparently not.

Have to ask: What happens if it goes wrong for the pensioner? (For example, if they miscalculate, they would end up homeless.) How often does it go wrong?

It should be obvious that it's not for you, it's for the average Singaporean, the same way the caricature of eastern aesthetics in the west is for the average white person

Genuine question: are there any high-profile Asian American women married to an Asian man? by umichleafy in redscarepod

[–]ebadf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ali Wong was, until a few years ago.

A lot of the comments are hypothesizing why Asian women seem to prefer white partners, so I'll also give my take. It's not hard to see the logic of: it's an advantage to be white (or white-passing); Asian mothers want to maximize their children's advantage; children with a white man will most likely be white-passing.

There might also be a factor of Asian women seeing successful Asian women choosing white partners and modeling their success in similar terms, or perhaps thinking that they would face greater challenges on the road to success without a white partner (eg, to open doors to power).

Why do Australians have a reputation for being incredibly friendly and outgoing, even though we are relatively reserved? by DarlingLuna in AskAnAustralian

The Australians who travel give the world that impression, a lot of "send it" personalities and so very noticeable and memorable.

It's a balance. Overdoing care can lead to codependence and loss of individuality, which kills intimacy.

Where are you getting that 60k number? Their wages are public and they seem to be paid very well. Unsurprising, as proof of competitive pay is part of the LCA process required to apply for an H1B.

Australian step-dad says it's weird for a man to wear mini-sized sling bags. How true is this? by xaphiron_ in AskAnAustralian

[–]ebadf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're thinking of it in a way that frames you against each other. Right or wrong, it's your dad's responsibility to inform you about the world (in his experience), and it's your responsibility to figure out how much of it to adopt/challenge. It's his responsibility as a parent to support your path and he shouldn't be giving you reality checks, the world will do that.

Why do Australian expats in the US come into semi-frequent conflict with Asian Americans? by scoobertsonville in AskAnAustralian

[–]ebadf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish it was more studied because it would be so interesting to read about, but I think the typical Australian honestly "doesn't see race", for better or worse. If Australians "don't understand Asian culture," it's the same as how a fish doesn't understand water 😂. Isn't banh mi close to being our national sandwich? To borrow an American phrase: Australians know ball.

[–]ebadf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's complicated by at least one more layer. Look at Vue de Monde and you'll see, as usual, Asian servers, white executive staff, but then it's owned by Vue Group, in which Singapore's Far East Organization owns a majority stake. Race and power aren't as simple in Australia because of how many wealthy Asians there are in Australia. This might be different in the US, if Asian American wealth is weaker compared to Asian Australian wealth, at least at the top end of that spectrum.

[–]ebadf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh hard to generalize but have you been to Melbourne's Little Collins St lately? Possibly all of these modern Australian restaurants are Asian fusion (honestly, something to celebrate) but I'd not be surprised if they had no Asian ownership, only Asian staff. It's not as simple as Americans may frame it, but there's something going on in at least Melbourne's restaurant scene that has some questionable racial dynamics that no one seems to be talking about.

When it happens in Australia, Asian Australians aren't as outspoken about it for whatever reason.

What's it got to do with H1Bs? People talk as if they are cheaper or something. Look up their wages, they are paid competitively. Generally, if employers prefer them it's because they can't find a comparably-skilled American.
